Better... but can't run MG tools correctly...

I've been running through the "Read and Run me First..." procedures, and the computer is running tres better, but when I run MGTools, the folder is created, a command screen pops up, and... nothing else happens. I did run HJT from inside the folder, and I'll include that log.

Situation background: This was my dad's computer. When we started using it, it would only boot correctly about every other time. It was being used (here, not at his house; I don't know what all he did with it) for playing games on Facebook, checking e-mail, and some schoolwork. I did put some freeware on it after we started using it, but we've NOT been using it for so long that I'm not real sure what I put on here except Firefox and some addons there. In any case, the computer would boot and none of my desktop icons would come up. It would often hang and need rebooted. After a reboot it would be slow, but it would work for a while... then the internet would stop running or run terribly slowly, then stop. I let it alone for a while, but needed a second computer so I could work while somebody played on Facebook. In truth, I'm not sure it came here working like that. We could very well be the reason for the troubles.

As an added note: My dad was running CA Security Center for all of his security. I removed the AV part of that and added Avast instead and just used it for the firewall. Avast keeps turning itself off, now. Also, even though I have the firewall and the AV off, one of the programs I ran (I think it was Ccleaner?) kept telling me they were active, including the AV part of CA, which I uninstalled. Weird.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

As stated in the instructions for Using MGtools, it must be run from the drive that you boot Windows from. You have it on drive D. You must put MGtools.exe on drive C and run it from there. Then attach the C:\MGlogs.zip file.

Sorry-- I was confused, so I did it for both D and C. The drive is partitioned or whatever.. something to do with Compaq and HP getting married, or... I don't know... but I only included the D drive attempt because windows runs from that disc(I think). Here's the C drive result (I had the same trouble there).

Thank you for being amazingly prompt!

...Okay, having trouble remembering where that log is... I'll figure it out or re-run...

I remember; I ran HJT from D, but not C, after having problems getting MGTools to run-- here's the log after doing it from C drive.

just to be clear-- I was unable to get MGTools to run through the batch files and produce a log zip file on either C or D drive. Sorry if that didn't make sense...

You appear to have 3 antivirus programs installed. The first instruction in the READ & RUN ME specify that you must not do this. Security suite packages do not gracefully allow you to only remove one component. You will still have security center conflicts between applications. You now need to uninstall all of the below:

    • Avast
    • CA Security Suite
    • McAfee Security Scan
Then reboot the PC and continue with the below.

Please click Start, Run, and enter cmd and click OK. This will open a command prompt window. Enter the below commands at the command prompt each followed by the enter key. The bold black are commands. The purple is merely informational.

cd \MGtools <-- this changes to the MGtools folder and the prompt should change to C:\MGtools>
GetRunKey <-- this will try to run all one scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.
ShowNew <-- this will try to run all another scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.

Okay, McAfee was a mistake; I didn't even catch that it was there. It's gone now. I've removed the anti-virus section of CA.. All that's left is the parental control and firewall. It's the only firewall I have running, as far as I can tell, and it's currently disabled. Should I also remove Avast? It's currently disabled as far as I can tell, but it does show up as running (as does the CA AV, which I already uninstalled...) when I run whichever program it was...

So, is CA still actually running an AV program I don't know about and can't see? Should I remove Avast even though it's (I think) the sole AV program installed now?
    Thanks again.

Okay, I'm not on crack. Just re-read your post and got my head out... removing CA. Do I need to remove Avast as well? Already took McAfee off...

You need to remove all of them now as instructed since installing them at the same time has created problems for the Windows. After we are sure your PC is clean, you can then decide what you want to install but DO NOT mix security suites from different vendors. If you wish to install Avast, then you must not install a security suite package from CA or anyone else.

    New problem

Regarding CA security suite: When I was only removing specific elements of the program, it did it even without the password. Now, I cannot get the rest of CA off. It was my father's computer; he's no longer with us. I don't know how to remove the rest of the CA program.

With only CA remaining, MG tools worked. Here's the log.

    Re: New problem

Not sure what you mean about a password. Programs do not normally require a password to uninstall them except in corporate environments. You just need to be an adminstrator. Did you actually run the uninstall via Add/Remove programs and did you get any error messages?

Let's try removing CA using other methods. First try installing and running the below to see if it can uninstall it:

    Revo Uninstaller

Then no matter what happens with the above, continue on with the below.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dvHighMem] C:\WINDOWS\cfgmng32.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [cctray] "C:\Program Files\CA\CA Internet Security Suite\cctray\cctray.exe"
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [capfupgrade] C:\Program Files\CA\CA Internet Security Suite\CA Personal Firewall\capfupgrade.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [capfasem] C:\Program Files\CA\CA Internet Security Suite\CA Personal Firewall\capfasem.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [cafw] C:\Program Files\CA\CA Internet Security Suite\CA Personal Firewall\cafw.exe -cl
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe
    O4 - Global Startup: Compaq Connections.lnk = C:\Program Files\Compaq Connections\1940576\Program\BackWeb-1940576.exe
    O4 - Global Startup: Kodak software updater.lnk = C:\Program Files\Kodak\KODAK Software Updater\7288971\Program\Kodak Software Updater.exe
    O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Find Fast.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\FINDFAST.EXE
    O23 - Service: CaCCProvSP - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\CA\CA Internet Security Suite\ccprovsp.exe
    O23 - Service: WinSock Svchost Manager (WinSvchostManager) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\svcprs32.exe

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

whoa... I thought I had got through it and posted what I needed to. My dad had put password on it because of the parental control feature, probably because my daughter used the computer at times. I found the password, removed CA, and reinstalled Avast. Are the logs I've posted above insufficient?

Since you decided to do things on your own ( which we specically ask you not to do in the READ & RUN ME ), none of my previous fix nor your logs are valid anymore and if you ran my fix, it would just now totally break Avast. In order to continue, you will have rerun ComboFix and then MGtools and provide new logs.
