The need for speed??

I probably already know that I may get a well deserved slap for this, but I need to speed up an older Dell.

    It's a Dimension 2100 with a 1.1ghz Celeron, 512mb ram and is running XP with SP3.

I just did a fresh re-install and I'm only using 7gb out of the 40gb hard drive.

This thing is about as slow as I have ever seen. I have older systems with slower processors and less ram that are faster.

    Where should I begin?

    No need for a slap.

Unfortunately, according to Dell, your memory is maxxed out.

Have you attempted to de-fragment the system? I know it is new but it may have become very fragmented on installation and a de-fragment may yield results.

Another thing you should do is turn off or delay as many start-up programs as possible.

    Correct on the fragmentation issue.
Have seen 38% fragmentation after a fresh reinstall. Gets worse after installing updates.
