im a little confused. ive read that your board manufacturer has to release a bios update in order to run a socket am3 prostituter in a socket am2+ board. there hasnt been an update since 2008 (which may contain what i need but does not declare so). simply looking for a little clarification on weather or not i can buy an am3 and begin my upgrade process with the cpu or if i need to start with the board.

please do not post saying "upgrade this first" without elaborating in depth as to why you feel this should be the first step.

Let's start with make and model of the motherboard please. You didn't provide any info at all.

PCChips. it looks like all it supports on the lines of am3 is the "Sempron 140 (C2) (45W) 2700 (1MB,4000,AM3)". can someone verify this please?

This is the CPU list from PCChips USA site for the a15G V1.0 mobo--
    CPU
    AMD Phenom™ processors (Socket AM2+) / AMD Athlon™ 64 FX / Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core/ Athlon™ 64 / Sempron processor.

Some odd stuff listed in the board specs. Max memory 16Gb BUT "Due to the DRAM maximum size is 2GB at present, the memory maximum size we have tested is 4GB". ??

Board seems to have some OK reviews on Newegg but my own experience with PC Chips mobos is to avoid them.

I posted the supported CPUs that PC Chips has listed for that board on their site. You may also see about a BIOS flash that may include more support for newer CPUs.

I commented on the odd memory size statement as I haven't seen one like that before.

I also commented on my experience with PC Chips boards.

looking for an answer from someone with a little more knowledge on this issue. you obviously dont know what you are talkling about because you simply gave the titles of cores that are on at least 3 different socket types, and in some cases more, ie sempron. come on dude.....
