If PSU dies or fails, does the pc become useless?

Everytime I read about PSUs, people warn you "if it fails, your entire computer goes with it." Somehow I don't believe that, and here is why:

A unit within an electronic equipment draws power from the PSU for power. If the PSU fails then the individual electronic equipment within the rig will stop working UNTIL THE FAILED PSU IS REPLACED. So what's with all the "doomsday" warnings about the psu failing and you having to buy a new computer if that happens.

If anyone could either advise me on this either way, that would be great, Thank you!

I believe because most times the PSU fails.. the charges are all over the place and destroys the components with it... Like a power surge or something like that.

I may not be right on that.. I will let someone else confirm and answer.

    Thanks for your help:)

I'm doing some more research into it, but nonetheless I'm going to buy a backup uninterruptible psu.

No problem... I love to help. I am kind of newbie tech (not really newbie, but compared to most of these experts on majorgeeks), I am doing some computer courses online and i went to a technical institute and have been fixing people's computer for like 10 years. (since i was about 15 years old)

I am really getting into this site actually and helping alot.. it is almost like doing more computer courses, more experience.

    Pretty much spot on mate!

A PSU can take this with it, doesn't always, infact most of the time they don't. but i have seen and heard many stories when someones PSU blows and takes the MB with it.

If you get a good, quality PSU, like one off the Corsair Range, you should be fine!

ya because the motherboard is the one that is connected with a HUGE connector from the PSU... the motherboard would take the hit.. and blow out everything with it.

    kind of like dominoes...

Not really the reason why but ok.

And try to avoid using (...) in your posts, as they get moderated my a mod because they trigger the spam filter.

eMachines of a few years ago were bad for PSU's taking out the motherboard everytime they failed - but as Burrell said it doesn't always happen as a general rule, and I have in fact never had it happen when using a decent quality power supply.

Be wary of power supplies that come with cases . . . unless the case itself is a quality unit (Antec, Corsair, Thermaltake, etc.).

His post agrivated me, and i've had a long night, I'm just a bit cautious when newbies post tech info on here, as he has already posted false info on other threads.

    Please don't hurt me. ;)

Burrel if you have noticed.. when I am unsure about a fact, I say exactly that as shown below if you didn't see it.

My sister-in-law's PSU bit the dust. I replaced the PSU. It ran fine for years afterward, and it was cheapo emachine or something like that.
