How do I get my stuff into new computer?

Hi everyone...so happy I found this place! I have so much to learn. I recently upgraded from a Dell computer purchased in '05 with Windows XP to an emachine with Windows 7. Money was tight so I have nothing really in this new computer. I was convinced by a Best Buy geek to buy the Transfer cable. I didn't buy it there but no matter...I was told it would be okay to transfer my WHOLE hard drive into this one so that I would not lose my Musicmatch jukebox and other programs I had downloaded and paid for. 18 files would no transfer so I kept going. My thoughts were that if I transferred all of it then my hard drive would basically handle anything that was not yet compatible with Windows 7. Wrong...my landlord actually found my "restore" on this thing and got the whole mess out. I've managed to get back things I had on the other computer but cannot even get to Musicmatch...seems they are now a shoddy company and I just paid them $65 in December for 2 yrs. No phone number and no answer to my emails. My photo software that came with my camera is not compatible with Win 7 so I can't do anything with my pictures either. I need both my Musicmatch JB 10 back and preferably some kind of HP transfer software that included other ways to work with photos. Any ideas? ALSO: Is it safe to try this transfer wire again if only to transfer my pictures and documents? I'm afraid to even plug it in. What I need is MMJB 10 back, some form of adobe photoshop I can understand...I had 2 which I could use but I also got 5 from a friend and had no clue how to use it and I need some kind of DVD copier software as mine is NERO but has to be paid for if I want to even try it. No capability on last computer. I have Realplayer which I don't like but I cannot copy DVD's unless I pay for that. I can't afford anymore and they won't take back the transfer cable either. Sorry so long...I know this is a lot.:cry

First, as you found out, you shouldn't try to load the entire harddrive from one computer to another (that is if I'm reading your post correctly). There is much much more than just documents on there.

You should reinstall any programs from either CD or an executable file you download. If you have paid programs, you should be able to reactivate them. They usually have sent you an authorization code. If you don't have it, try to email them. You mentioned you paid for musicmatch in December? They were acquired by Yahoo back in 2005. I actually always thought it was freeware. Here's a link to download old versions of it though: http://www.oldversion.com/MusicMatch-Jukebox.html

Any software you install, you should make sure it's compatible with Windows 7.

What is your camera? You may be able to find the software on the manufacturers website that you can download that is compatible for Win 7. There are also alternatives out there for photo editing if that is what you are looking for.

You should only transfer over files such as documents, pictures, music, etc. to your new machine.

As far as DVDs. Are you saying your computer came with Realplayer, but you have to pay for it?

Also, welcome to Major Geeks. :)

Thank you LauraR~! And yes...you read it right...I was told I could do this by a guy at Best Buy...oh well. With MusicMatch they give no website that offers you to put in a prior registration # which I have and I cannot get an answer from their customer support site. I'm very upset. Most everything else I got back except Diskeeper 2009 to which I cannot find my Reg but have enough info (IMO) to have gotten it back, yet they said over the phone that I must have purchased it from some other online store. I don't know...I don't remember actually purchasing that one. The rest... I spoke with HP about the camera/software and at this time there is no upgrade but they gave me no other ideas on what might be compatibe with an HP Photosmart M305 which I find unusual since my HP Photosmart printer is way old (1401) and it works fine. Musicmatch was always free, I thought, until last year when I needed to upgrade...that's yahoo taking over from what I hear. But who got my money. Thank you for the page to find an older version as it will be fine as long as it's Win 7 compatible. What is and executable file? Also I only have CD's of many photo's I saved thru a program from my old computer. I have not tried to see if they will upload yet. I could, if you think it is possible, transfer my files onto a CD and then upload them onto this computer but I'm not sure which program to use. I can do data with "Sonic" from the old computer and pictures many ways. I will also go on as soon as I get a chance to find out the names of the programs I had in my old computer since I now found this site. Thank you for your previous answers and any more you can provide me with for these!!! Oh yes, Realplayer is free just for downloading DVD's but you cannot put them on disc unless you pay...or at least my computer is saying first I had to use RW then I returned the DVD-R's and now it says I have to use CD-RW's...but actually that is the NERO program....Realplayer may be different if I pay...either way if I want to save a video I have to pay to put it on disc.

Sorry...an executable file is a file with an extension of .exe It is usually what you download onto your computer and then install it when you want to install software. You should be able to find most downloads online from manufacturers websites.

I would think your CDs with your photos have typical .jpg files. You should not have any problems loading your pictures on your computer into your Documents> Pictures file that is probably already on your computer.

To be honest, if you bought the transfer cable, I would use that. Did you get a software CD with your transfer cable? Burning to CD is the most inconvenient way, if you ask me. Another option is if you have any USB flash drives laying around. They are very easy to use.

As far as free photo editing software, it's out there. Unfortunately, I don't use it as I use photoshop for my editing. That might be something you should start a new thread asking about.

    Hi

Would you know if your Windows 7 is 32bit or 64bit? you can find this out by clicking Start > and right clicking Computer > Properties.

When you plug your HP Camera in (what model is it by the way), and you open Start > Computer is it listed as a device, could also check Start > Devices and Printers for it also?

If it does then you should be able to transfer your images using that route, and to edit them, there are a few choices,

    Picasa
The Gimp (similar to photoshop but free and has loads of guides)
Photoshop Online (this is free also and pretty simple to use, I use it when not at home or have laptop with me)

There are other free apps but these as a good mix of basic to medium/advanced

Thanks, yes I was just worried to try to use that transfer cable again but it was so expensive. All my pics are either jpg or gif and they did transfer before but when this computer had to be restored everything went off of it again and I've been leary ever since. I didn't really have the money to buy a usb flash as was suggested to me by a friend but I will try the transfer cable again. I'm just bummed that even though I can transfer this stuff, I can't download pics from the web or do anything with pic's I might take because my software is incompatible with Windows 7. I will, however, look into that website you sent me. I really appreciate that~! It would be cool if one could have XP and 7 in their hard drive....at least for me it would make life so much easier.

It's a 64 bit and I was instructed by HP on how to upload my pics but the issue was more that I can not crop them or whatever I want to do with them due to no software. It had to be the Photosmart software that came with the camera because I only had a "trial" on that last computer with Jasc and didn't buy...didn't like. The Adobe photoshop 2 I had a disc of from my 2001 computer (back when they sent every kind of disc for it, including drivers and utilites) and it's obviously not compatible. So basically I can upload photos I take but do nothing more with them. I take photos of the work I do in order to make sales and can't have them looking unprofessional. In time, I will find some kind of free download, I hope, but I think Win 7 is quite new isn't it? So not much in the freeware or shareware places I've been told of that are compatible. Thanks again!

As Halo mentioned, The Gimp is good free photo editing software from what I hear. People use it instead of paying the big bucks for Photoshop.

He also mentioned photobucket. I do use that and they have a number of photo editing options. It's online and you upload your pics onto it. It's fairly easy to use. The only issue is it does not allow really large photo files so you are limited on how big your photos can be. If you don't need them to be huge, it's fine.

I will check this out...I found out that on the other computer I had the newest of the "old" upgrades for MusicMatch and it is not compatible with 7 so for whatever reason they did this I assume they have a higher upgrade but as I said before...they are not answering emails. I tried gethuman.com and got a phone number for Yahoo. When I find the time I will call them. As far as resizing, I was using a freewared download called photorazor which was awesome. Pretty sure that's not compatible with 7 either. This seems to be a major issue with freeware/shareware. Not enough compatible yet out there. But thanks so much for your help~! I will continue to look until I can find what is right for me. Other issues are taking up my time now and it's aggravating to not have this computer with everything I need in it NOW...lol

    Hi

As I said, Musicmatch was discontinued years ago and is now Yahoo Music Jukebox. That's why it's not compatible. Almost all recent software will be compatible with Win7. I really not sure where you would have paid for Musicmatch. As far as I know it had always been freeware (I could be wrong though and it just came on my computers when I bought them).

    Hi

Yes Windows 7 is the latest version, released back end of 2009, You will be suprised in the amount of software that is compatible, and if one isnt then there always tends to be an alternate, so dont let anyone scare you into thinking nothing will work with it.

If you are basic editing then the software I/others have suggested will work for you fine in Win7 , dont know why I forgot about this one in the inbuilt Paint app in Window7 as i use this daily for cropping and basic editing as in Win7, its a vastly superiour app to Paint included with XP/Vista, just click Start and type paint and hit enter, its really easy to use and if you install the Free Live Photo Gallery http://download.live.com/photogallery you can also catalogue your pics for easy searching as well as basic edits.

I used to have the Musicmatch Jukebox and LOVED it...best music management software I ever owned. Although freeware in its "base" configuration, I paid for an "upgrade" license to unlock additional burn speed, equalization settings, etc... Certainly worth the $19.99 for the upgrade!!!!

Was extremely disappointed when Yahoo purchased the music subscription customer base and proceeded to scrap the Musicmatch software with their own Jukebox software. Nothing like Musicmatch...after stripping all the features that attracted me to Musicmatch, Yahoo was non-descript and a huge disappointment. Within months Yahoo started sending e-mail notices that their music service was switching over to Rhapsody, so I jumped ship to Microsoft's Zune software, as I figure they'll never switch over. While I like the Zune and the music store, the software is kinda tame compared to Musicmatch.

Back to YOUR question...I've briefly looked into alternatives and found one that kinda sorta resembles Musicmatch, although I can't remember exactly which one it was. Some of the programs I looked at were WinAmp; Jet Audio; & MonkeyPlayer(?)...maybe one of those will be a suitable replacement for you?

Thanks James and Halo and Laura...I will have to print all of this out~! LOL I am very disappointed about MusicMatch though because as James said, it is awesome and I downloaded it from MusicMatch. I could still do that now, I suppose, as I would imagine that what they are offering 6 mo's "after" my purchase would be compatible but they should have a place to put your former registration in to see that you've paid for however many yrs worth of use. I never paid for it before last December but as Laura mentioned, if Yahoo took over in 2005 then that was the year I bought my last computer so they may not have made the switch yet. So far it looks as if I am out $65 but I am not giving up yet. I will try to make a call directly to Yahoo to see if it can be worked out. As far as the photo editing...l'm on a short leave from what I do, taking care of health issues so if it takes me a few weeks or a month then I think with the info all of you wonderful "majorgeeks" have given me will pan out...Just want to say THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH~!

I couldn't see in previous posts whether you had solved your transferring photos from your camera, but sometimes my phone software doesn't show my phone as being connected to my computer. (I use my phone camera instead of regular camera and tranfer to pc, camera is similar in setup though they all have storage and folders).
If you connect your camera to your computer and then "drill" up from my control panel to my computer.
(that's how I do it, I have no desktop icons)
You should see your camera listed like a drive.
Click on it and you will probably see a folder that is named something similar to your camera...eventually you will find your photos and can put them on your computer.
It all sounds much more complicated than it is...
Gimp works well, has a learning curve but MANY tutorials.
