My computer (which is used by the whole family) has been working fine, until recently the Internet Explorer stopped working. About a week ago a "blue screen of death" popped up, and when I restarted the computer it fixed itself. Since then everyday a new problem arises. I am able to get online using Google Chrome, but if I try to bring up Internet Explorer it freezes and takes a bit to get it to shut down. I've run all of the "Read and Run me first" programs and there were quite a bit of malware and trojans removed. But the Internet Explorer is still doing the same thing. I've even tried uninstalling and reinstalling IE8, but it still does not work. I will attach the logs as requested. Thank you for any help with this matter.

I downloaded MGtools and i tried everything to get it to run, but it would not pop up. When I double clicked on it, it wouldn't do anything.

Do you have MGTools.exe directly on your root drive? (usually C:\)

What results do you get if you try running it in safemode?

Failing that try a rename (rename MGTools.exe to 123.com) and try and run it in either normal or safe mode if necessary. Let me know.

This should say "Do you have MGTools.exe directly in the root folder of your Windows Boot drive? (usually this would mean saved here C:\ )

Did you shutdown your protection software before trying to run MGtools? AVG will get in the way!!!!!! It may even delete MGtools.exe since it has a problem identifying the difference betweeen a malware removal tool and real malware. ;)

Based on where ComboFix was incorrectly run from ( see below), I would guess you incorrectly put MGtools.exe there too.
    c:\documents and settings\Owner\My Documents\Downloads\ComboFix.exe

Because I'm having to use google chrome, it doesn't give the the option of saving it to the folder I want to save it to, it just automatically saved it in C:/docs and settings. Is there any way to move it to a different folder once it has been downloaded to c:? And how do you rename it? Where do you go to do so? Also, I did shut down AVG and it shut down as far as i knew, it gave me the warning "are you sure you want to do this" and I said yes I was sure and the icon disappeared from the startup tray. Well when I tried to proceed with the download it kept telling me that AVG was present and I didn't see it present anywhere! I had shut it down, yet it kept finding it present somewhere. Any more suggestions? Thank you so much.

ok, so now my internet explorer IS working. Hooray! So I guess all i need to know now, is there anything else I need to do? What precautions should I take to make sure so many viruses don't infect my computer in the future? Should I re-enable the defogger? I just went to do so and it said to make sure you guys were done. Is there any other anti-spyware I should have on my computer other than AVG? Thanks for all the help you guys! You are truly #1!!

Not true! It just means you did not set the option up. Double click the below thumbnails to enlarge them.

On the top right of Chrome, click the Settings wrench: GC-Settings.jpg

    Then select Options. GC-Options.jpg

Then select the Minor Tweaks tab which has the option to Ask where to save each file before downloading. GC-Downloads.jpg

Yes that is the file but it should not be in your downloads folder so you must have copied it there. MGlogs.zip is always generated in your root folder when MGtools is run. Thus C:\MGlogs.zip is where it will be found.

You logs only showed some minor adware from MyWebSearch/FunWebProducts which has been removed. Also it shows you ran MGtools in safe boot mode which is not how you should have run it.

However if you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps below.
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

I tried to type in what you suggested to uninstall combofix and you were right, it said it could not find it because it was saved to C:/docs and settings instead of the desktop. Is there any other way to uninstall this since I downloaded it to the wrong location? (please forgive my computer ignorance, I am not as smart as you guys are when it comes to this stuff, but I really do try). I realize you deal with this everyday, but this is new to me and my dad used to be the one to fix my computer (he was a computer whiz) but he passed away last year and now it's up to me to do figure out all of the computer lingo and what not. Is it necessary to uninstall the combofix or is this something I can skip? I really appreciate all of your help with this, just please be patient with me as I am still learning. Thank you.

    You're welcome.

    Try the below
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • c:\documents and settings\Owner\My Documents\Downloads\ComboFix /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.

Ok, new problem now, everything seemed to be ok, the internet explorer was working fine, now it is not working again. My brother in law said it when he was online earlier it crashed on him. My sister just grabbed me and said, "the computer is not working again"! So, i'm back on google chrome, which is working like before, only REALLY slow. I was almost afraid it wouldn't get online. Now what have I done? What could be wrong? It's like there is still a lingering virus or some other malware that is hiding and I can't get rid of it. I wanted to ask you what I should do before I got rid of combofix and proceed with everything else. *puzzled* :cry

Not likely to be malware since as I stated in a previous message, you did not have any major malware issues to begin with. You just had some minor adware from MyWebSearch/FunWebProducts which has been removed. You could attach a new log from running Malwarebytes and MGtools if your wish, but I'm not expecting to find anything.

I just ran malware bytes anti-malware again and it found 29 threats! I thought I just got rid of these! (sorry, not yelling at you, just frustrated at the situation). I will attach the latest mbam log to show you the results. After I ran it again, i had the threats removed and now internet explorer is working again, but am i going to have to run mbam everyday to get rid of these before I can get online? They sure popped back up awful quick! :(

You did! But this shows that you did not complete my final instructions which included toggling system restore. Thus that is why they show in this log. Neither Malwarebytes not any other program can remove things in an active System Volume Information folder which is the System Restore folder. You must disable system restore to delete restore points.

MyWeb has nothing to do with internet explorer not working and especially things in restore points have no effect whatsoever since they are not being used.

Ok, I have gone through the final instructions. There were a couple of things that I couldn't do. First, I still could not uninstall combofix with the prompt you gave me (the second one to try). It says it can't find it. Also, the MGtools part of it, I can't do. If I try to run MGtools, it says it is not valid. I have disabled and re-enabled system restore. What could be making my internet explorer not work? I've uninstalled and re-installed it. It seemed to work after running the Malware (mbam). I thought that I might be able go to add/remove programs to remove Combofix, but it was not there. Thanks for any additional info.

    You're welcome.

Then you already deleted it some how. You previously had it here:
    c:\documents and settings\Owner\My Documents\Downloads\ComboFix.exe

You can download it again, but to your Desktop and run my first method of uninstalling it.

The final procedure did not ask you to run MGtools. It asks you to run MGclean.bat which is in the MGtools folder.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "not work" but if it is crashing, you will have to get your Event Viewer log ( see http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Open-Event-Viewer ) and try posting in the Software Forum since you are not having malware problems. You are likely just having very inconsistent behavior with IE which may explain why it works sometimes. Running MBAM is not changing or fixing anything related to IE as you can see in the log.

Another possible option may be to just update to IE8 instead of using the outdated IE7 and see if that fixes your problem.
