Can any one recommend a free bandwidth monitor that works with Win 7? Always used NetMeter in the past, but it doesn't work in 7.

Did you get an error saying 'Nothing to monitor'? It installed just fine, supposed to work with Vista so by extension W7.

Yes, it did say nothing to monitor, but absolutely nothing being recorded when I d/loaded a file.

I just installed Paessler PRTG to try it, but IE8 is warning me off. It certainly looks the business, but has anyone here any knowledge of it?

Too bad, netMeter was nice and simple, I'm not sure I want to configure PRTG. Firefox warned me about my router's address too which is ridiculous!

I use this amazing system restore program, Wondershare Time Shuttle. Makes me fearless when trying things out, as I can revert the system in its entirety in the time it takes to reboot - even if it's not able to boot to Windows. Best thing I ever bought.

What does this have to do with bandwidth monitoring. Begone ad.

If you need to monitor your entire networks bandwidth I'd recommend DD-Wrt

Otherwise if its just one computer or flashing your router firmware is too hard, This program Yale is pretty decent. http://majorgeeks.com/Yale_d5174.html

May I point out this is my thread and the post is in response to Augiedoggie's caution about trying out PRTG. It is NOT an ad. :mad

Hmm, Yale looks OK if you want to monitor current activity but does not give accumulated stats over a period of time as I assume many ISP's don't. With NetMeter, this would give me warning if I got download happy for those with bandwidth caps.

DD-WRT is a whole other subject which I am not qualified to even ask a question about. I may try it if my router supports it. I really hate flashing things.;) I've got enough doorstops.

Well, I've tried everything that I know of in my W7 X64 Ult install and no go in XP SP2/SP3 nor Vista in compatibility/admin mode. I may get an idea tomorrow but that's basically it for me, hopefully someone here has a solution. Too bad as I liked NetMeter even though my ISP has daily monitoring which I can access but it's good to know which of one's activities contributes more to the mix.

I found that leaving an internet radio going 24/7 was a really bad idea as was my penchant for YouTube!-D Anyways Earthling, if I find something comparable and compatible, I'll post it up.

It was to try to ascertain the effect of internet radio that set me off down this road in the first place, and to make things worse my ISP has been taken over recently and the new owner has both imposed a cap and no longer provides any usage data. I do need something to do what NetMeter did or I'm really flying blind :(

Maybe BitMeter 2? Had it installed once, very similar to Netmeter. On the download page, says it works in Win7, doesn't specify 32 or 64 though.

I went to the author's site and grabbed the NetMeter 1.1.4 beta, seems to work nicely so far but unfortunately, there probably won't be any more work done by the authour, maybe someone else will take his place. See home page.

@Plastidust Thanks for that, I'll be checking it out tomorrow.

The NetMeter beta certainly is doing what I want in Win 7 Ult x64. Thanks augie :)

BitMeter only provides current bandwidth, no totals unfortunately.

I'm not sure it's that accurate really, yesterday I had some 60MB in traffic for 14 hours and today I'm up to 1.5 GB after less then 5 hrs.? Unless someone is stealing my wireless, there's no way this should be so. I'll check with my ISP tomorrow to corroborate these numbers.

Bwuahahaha! I had forgotten that I had transferred a movie from my other machine to this one which weighs in @ 1.36GB! :-o:-D All is well again.:) However, the authour does state that there are some weird glitches in this beta.

Hi sorry to contradict you, BitMeter does have totals, the screen shot on the download url at MG's shows the stat's, it is possible to show a stats grid also, which displays hourly, daily and monthly totals. I attached my log for your viewing. I've run this program for about 3 years on XP and Win7. HTH

I'd better have another look then, in case NetMeter turns out unsatisfactory for any reason. Apologies :-o

No worries Earthling, there's only one thing I don't like about BitMeter and that is it will only calculate on a strict month by month basis - ie May 1 to May 31. A real nuisance when your ISP calculates your totals from your join up date - ie May 7th to June 6th, like mine:(.

Take a look at Networx augie (#19 from theefool). Very configurable, so all LAN traffic can be excluded.

Huh, didn't realize there is a quota on it. I might just have to set this up for my parents, since they are on Satellite. 250 MiB max for download per day.
