I have read a few posts here but I can't find out what I need to do. Here is what has happened over the last 5 days. I am running XP. Got a major Trojan, virus, unknown 5 days ago, locked up the desktop, kept wanting me to buy it's software to remove it, the usual bs. So, I system restored, worked for a day. Concluded it was trapped in the restore since it came back the next day. So, I turned off system restore and thus deleted all the restore points, this worked again for a day. Now the computer, Gateway gt5220 network adapters are all '' red x's '' and I am not able to get on line. It just keeps '' acquiring network address ''. I tired every cmd line to reset the dns, see if win sock was corrupt and even change out the Ethernet card. Nothing works, I can not get on line. The rest of computer works fine.

I do not know what to do, would putting Vista on top of the XP fix this maybe?

You might try removing and reinstalling your network drivers in safe mode, and setting a static IP. Reboot and try getting online to follow the tutorial for removing malware here. Use another computer to check your router and see what IP's are available.

You can also try going into Device manager, and "uninstall" your network adapter. Reboot, and let Windows find the "new" hardware and load drivers for it. Often doing this has cleared up some sticky connection problems for me when just re-installing drivers didn't fix the problem.

Good luck - post back if you can when you get it squared away.

Tried everything. What I see is that all 4 network adapters have red X's on them in the device manager. I cant get on line, I have tried to delete them and let windows reinstall them. The network can not reconfig an network IP address or it can not be repaired also.

I think that something happened to the registry or it was corrpteed with the trojans were removed last week. :confused:cry

Have you tried testing out a USB wifi card? You can get for a fairly cheap price either a USB wifi adapter or a card reader type adapter.

Save the log and paste it here:

(check what is unknow and nasty and delete it is easy)

    3. Download and repair registry (make a backup) with this:

    http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download

    4. And just when you end all 3 steps, do last one, download, execute and restart after use this:

    support.microsoft.com/kb/299357

    5. Optional, but really usefull:

    Go:

When i say "delete" send all to the recycle bin, after that empty it.

    C:/Windows/temp (delete all)
    C:/windows/prefetch (delete all)
<< - Enable option in folder to see hidden files ->>
C:/documents and settings/ your user / Local Settings / Temp (delete all)

    Good luck, tell me results.
