My Hp Pavillion a6554f with Vista crashed. I had not Backed up files. From Recovery Manager I had no restore points. Start-up repair did not work. I then Backed up folders, settings, documents, e-mail, etc at Recovery Manager. It would not recognize my DVD for a destination but successfully backed up to a Geek Squad(R) 8 gig Flash Drive. After recovery from image on HD to original factory settings, I cannot get Restore to find the back up files on the Flash Drive to recover my folders, settings, documents, favorites, etc. I need these documents!!! Everything else would be nice but not necessary.

I am still un-recovered! Someone please help!

The Flash drive I backed-up to created a file folder, "(J:) 'MINWINPC'" it opens to:
    'Backup Files 2010-05-27 041152
    Backup Files 2010-05-27 073711
    Backup Files 2010-05-27 134217
    Backup Files 2010-05-28 003614
    Backup Files 2010-05-28 014450'

...this in turn opens to, "(J:) 'MINWINPC; Backup Files 2010-05-27 041152; opens to:
    Backup.1.exe (Opens Recovery Manager)
    Backup.2.fbw (Type: fbw_auto_file, 2.60 GB).

Backup.1.exe Opens Recovery Manager, but no backup files are found to recover.

Backup.2.fbw will not open for file transfer because of an unknown file extension.

"(J:) 'MINWINPC'" also has a text file:
    "history.log", (a text document),

    it opens to; "history-Notepad;

'Thu May 27 03:52:32 2010: Start of RestoreWiz.
    Thu May 27 03:52:32 2010: Version of RestoreWiz.exe : 8.0.83.76
Thu May 27 03:53:14 2010: End of RestoreWiz with return code 1.'

How can I open the file Backup.2.fbw to transfer files, settings, and documents?
    If not,
How can I recover these Backups?

Will some 'Major Geek' please rescue this 'minor geek' from his "Backup procrastination". Thanks

doing that wiped out the user who owns those files.
There might be a way to take ownership of the files you have on the flash drive but I've never installed Vista so I have zero experience with the recovery manager in it.

    This has helped some, but...

I still haven't had any luck. Tried to rename to several different extensions including to .zip but to no avail.

On the road you started me on, I did find that Recovery Manager is a Hp Recovery program on my Hp Pavillion w Vista. The file extension associated with the folder I am trying to access is .fbw. This is an extension created by Hp Recovery Manager and proprietary to its RestoreWiz@ generated backups. This ext. is for a 'split file'. Do you or anyone else know anything about this type of file? or how to recover a 'split file' or make its contents available? about RestoreWiz 8.0.83.76?

Any and all help or attempts are greatly appreciated, Thanks.

    Really minor geek, but Aspiring!

Are you sure about that .fbw ext?
Everything I read about HP RestoreWiz says it uses an .fpw ext.
