    Hey

I am building a comp to run 7, play video games and to share with my family....
It will almost always be on, and the comp will be running a java based program and or flash/movies at all times...

i am wondering if the memory is correct with the mobo and that the power supply is strong enough to make the comp run quiet...

    below is the listings

Just a few things to point out

That PSU is very low quality. I would spend more and get a quality unit. Low quality power supplies can fail and take out components with it.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341012 would be my suggestion for a PSU.

What games are you going to play on the computer? If the computer is being used for flash videos and java stuff you do not need quad core or 8gb ram. Just overkill and waste of money. Also the memory you have selected is overkill for the type of application.

I would suggest a good dual core and 2-4 GB ram

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811154102 Would suggest this for a case. You would pay the same price and this case has free shipping.

My thouhgts are similar to below.

Scrap the 8Gb ram, you'll never use it, spend the cash on a good PSU, like a Corsair TX650.

Apart from that, it looks good to go!

I have this text kindly provided for reproduction here by Digerati on the importance of a good power supply, please take the time to read it:

i think i need at least 6gb of ram because on my current amd processor (with 2gb of ram) lags like hell, i watch tv while playing mmos like wow and runescape

i know its not the internet its the comp because i have a 1000 mbps card in it.

that's why i was thinking 8gb might help the issue and a cpu with 12mb of l2 cache might fix the issue too.

On the power supply, I randomly picked one. I dont know a thing about what differs one psu from another one.

I'll read the article above, maybe that might help... but if you can help me it would be most proffered

How old is the computer? Do you do system maintenance like De fragment Etc. What video card does it have?

The basic essence of the post above is:

Use this site to find out how much power you need (expressed in watts): http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp

Make sure you add about 150W onto the figure provided to make sure your PSU can cope with later expansions. Also, I recommend setting the motherboard to high end desktop, TDP to 100%, system load to 100% and capacitor ageing to at least 30%

Use this site to determine a reputable brand because if you do not get a reputable brand you are much more likely to loose the whole computer if it fails: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=208143

Bear in mind the main factor you are looking for is the amps figure on the +12V rail. This should be high, but conversely the other amperage figures should not be too low.

Just for reference: watts = amps * volts, so wattage is a good indicator, it's just that the +12V rail should have a lot of amps.

comp is like 3 or 4 years old. i defrag once every 6 months. video card blows 256mb, im thinking it might be both the out dated cpu and video card.

and on the psu thank you for the info

Could you post the full specs of the system?

Ya, I'd lose 4GB of the RAM too and invest in a better video card and/or power supply.

CORSAIR CMPSU-550VX 550W ATX12V or better. (Depends on video card choice)

For the video card, get something like this at least, as your choice is somewhat wimpy by today's standards:

    EVGA 512-P3-N871-AR GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512MB

Also, I think your choice of CPU is overkill. Save a $100 and put the money into the above:

    Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 2.33GHz 4MB L2 Cache LGA 775 95W Quad-Core Processor

I've got an Intel C2Q Q6600 @2.4GHz and this thing can't be choked!

Just some random thoughts to muddy the waters a bit.;)

For the price of the Q9550, I would look into a P55 system

I doubt you would ever want to SLI that card, even if you did, you can't, bacause your MB only supports Corssfire ;)

  16. collinsl

    collinsl MajorGeek

That, and, speaking as someone who has SLI'd in the past, it really isn't that good. I found SLI to be troublesome and it actually limited performance on the one game I wanted it to increase.

A 9500gt is a major bottleneck. Especially for gaming.

9500gt SLI is a total waste.

    I would suggest a GTS 250

Maybe look into the Corsair TX650W and TX750W PSU's as you get more for not much more money.

I agree with geek about maybe an I7 setup for that price.

Also you forgot a dvd/cd drive and and OS.

I'd look into an HX series of corsiar PSUs. They're Modular.

Yes, but they cost a ******* bomb! I think the money would be much better spent on a better video card.
