i'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this question , but i have to start somewhere. i've been wanting to see what linux/open sourse was all about so i went to the unutu site and created a live disc per their instructions. when i try to run the disc my computer does'nt "see" it, i'm prompted to insert disc. when i right click on the d/drive and click open the ubuntu iso file opens and displays all the sub files, so i'm pretty sure i burned the cd right. my computer is dell dim4600c and it's running windows xp with sp3. any ideas or thoughts will be most appreciated. tia

:confused How are you trying to 'run' this disk? Are you re-booting the machine and that's when it prompts you to insert a disk? If so, it sounds like the burn process didn't work quite right. What method(program and process) did you use to burn? Not that I know what I'm doing with Linux, but I had no troubles with getting a live CD to work. Now if I can just remember the process.

    Some info here
Should be F2 for your Dell at boot, to enter BIOS to change the boot sequence.

This thread will probably get moved to Linux support forum. So keep a look out for it.

    Hi

Think plastidust has this right and seems as if you are tyying to run the ISO file, whereas you will need to burn the ISO to CD to allow it to be bootable (enter BIOS and set CDROM as 1st boot device) and to burn the ISO to CD this app in ImgBurn is the best I have found.

All you need to do is to is click the folder icon as listed below and browse for the ISO file

    http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/3763/imgburn12.jpg

Then click Write disc at the bottom as shown below and this will once finished leave you with a bootable linux disk (note the file in the image is different as its just an image I have saved)

thanks for the replies. the program i used to burn the cd is infrarecord, this was suggested by the ubuntu site. the way the set up instructions read, once i successfully burn the cd all i need to do is put it in the player and "viola". if i have to reset the boot sequence, will i have to reset it (back) after i'm done using the ubuntu program. i don't have time to try anything right now but will give all the suggestions a try later.

p.s. collins, you really do look like a gestapo/ss guy, you must be a republican:-D

Once you're done using the live CD, you can enter BIOS and hit the key to" Setup Defaults". If you feel you may want to experiment more with the Ubuntu CD later, then leave the CD/DVD ROM to #1 in boot priority
    Cheers..

Thanks Halo, excellent reminder(for this cloudy brain) and sure saved a lot of typing.
As sikvik says, you may want to experiment with the Ubuntu CD more than once(most likely). So you probably shouldn't change the boot sequence back, just let it stay with the CD/DVD drive being first in the boot sequence.

If there is no disk in the drive when the system is booted/re-booted then it will just move on to the next drive in the boot sequence which hopefully you have set to be the hard drive. If there is a disk in the drive(during boot/re-boot) but it isn't bootable(a data disk, unformated, etc.) that's when you get prompted to insert a disk.

I'm with collinsl, let us know how it goes.

did'nt mean to take so long getting back . i have tried all your suggestions and have made some progress. imgburn seems to be a much better program than the one i first tried. it burned the disc just fine as far as i can tell.also reset boot sequence to boot from cd drive first. i should have saved the download/burn log but i lost it when i re-booted my computer. any how , the cd will not run and the log entry says "no reference point ". i half way suspect a problem with the cd player itself but i haven't dug into that yet. any thoughts. tia

p.s. collins, the republican comment was just a bad attempt at a joke

At this point, it might be easier to order a free Ubuntu CD if you suspect your burner isn't working properly.
    https://shipit.ubuntu.com/
It says it may take up to 10 weeks. My experience has been that it takes about a week.

i've been trying to figure this out and i hate to give up on it, although i may go ahead and order the live cd just in case. my cd player will play dvd's and some cd's. actually my computer crapped out last week due to some malware/virus and i down loaded/burned the avast av program to a cd on another computer and it opened and played just fine on my machine. earlier today i tried down loading and burning another av program to use as a recovery back-up disc and every thing worked fine up until a verification towards the end of the process. the disc would eject and i would get a pop-up sayiing" reference not found and that this problem was common with slim line and laptop machines". does this make any sense. tia:confused

i tried burning at slower speeds and now i get a pop-up that says there isn't enough room on the cd. the cd's i'm using are 52x 700mb (that's all that wal-mart had) and the ubuntu file is 699mb+. what does being a slim-line or lap top have to do with any of this. tia

The "reference not found" error has been explained as occurring more on CD drives that are slim, like those found on laptops. It doesn't mean it can't occur on normal sized CD drives.
But, realize too that sometimes the error the computer pops up has nothing to do with the actual problem.
That's why sites, like MajorGeeks, exist to help people figure out what is really the problem and not rely on the error message which might not have a thing to do with the problem.

Hmm, does it say 700MB and/or 80 Minute on the discs themselves? The ISO is incredibly close in time, 79:36 out of 80:00 Check a clean CD with My Computer, right-click the drive and choose Properties. and see if it says 702MB and 736, 958, 464 bytes. I have a feeling these Wal-Mart things might be mislabeled at best from 650MB.

    Hi

What ISO are you trying to burn now as the one in your log is an AVG (the Antivirus) file Source File: C:\Documents and Settings\randy thurman.NEWCOMPUTER.001\My Documents\Downloads\avg_arl_cd_en_90_100429.iso < links to an AVG Rescue CD

The Ubuntu ISO is HERE and named ... ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso

But if ImgBurn is nto working for you use the application you memtioned earlier in infrarecord

Change BIOS to boot from CD and see what happens. If it burnt correctly then you'll have a LiveCD to play with. Good luck.

EDIT: I don't think Windows has the capability to burn ISO's though I could be wrong.

How the heck did you burn AVG instead?

auggie, i was trying to burn a different iso file to make sure it wasn't the ubuntu file itself that was the problem. i saved them both on my desk top and clicked on the wrong one when i copied it to my post.i went to the imgburn site help forum and posted my problem and the burn log. their answer was to up date my firmware, clean my disc player, use a decent cd and get a new cd player.wtf:banghead i've spent way to much time on this so i'll probably just send for a live cd as was suggested earlier in this thread. thanks to all for the help

Try this: take your burned Ubuntu ISO to a friend's house and see if it boots up on another computer. If it does, then you've learned: a) the CD brand is okay, b) the burning process works, and c) you may be having a problem with your CD drive, reading a disk, since the Live CD works on another computer.

If it doesn't work, then see if the friend is willing to burn the Ubuntu ISO for you. Take it home and see if your computer will boot from it. If not, then you have at least discovered there is a problem with your CD drive.

    Hi

Ok cheers, just threw me like Augie on where AVG came into it, but I see that both have issues in being burned, so I would also as well as following plodrs great advice is to also check that your CD burners cable is securely plugged in to both the CD drive and the motherboard (even if you have a spare cable change it to a new or known good one) as cables can go bad and cause issues like this.

Also run this HERE to remove the upper and lower filters as that can cause burn issues.

Or go to your local Borders/Waldenbooks and pick up a Linux User, Linux Pro, Linux Developer, or Ubuntu User magazine with a 10.04 distro on the included disk. The distros included on the disk are listed right on the cover; find a magazine with the required distro...10.04 and 9.10 are very common and easy to find in Linux mags.
