Anyone gonna be watching this? America has good team this year so don't count yourselves out and plus last time we played each other you in the world cup you guys won 1-0 in 1950.

I know your probably thinking "But its England they are just gonna rip us a new one!"

    Well your right :-D

I have to agree Rikky as this will be the hardest match that England will play in that group, the USA has a very strong team and the goalkeeper plays for my favoured team and is superb (Tim Howard) and wish he was the England keeper!!

Our team is full of male wags they IMHO have no passion for the game left, just looking after their sponsorships, we going to be creamed, may get into the last stages past the groups with the USA but beyond that, nah!

Yup and he does well, just hope that Everton can keep hold of him for the future, if he does well in the World Cup his stake to better teams and pay will be much more than Everton can pay.

@Laura, games in the group USA are in are HERE and if you goto this page HERE and click the Convert to your time zone icon you will get local time to you.

    Re: England vs America

yeah, dont think the England squad is 100%, Rooney iirc is sporting an injury from past, we rely too heavily of the gliterarty of football to carry us through and for me that just are more focued on their profiles opposed to the actual game, we will get through the group stages but will get creamed in the knockout.

Just dont belive that the team is focused to win.

His replacement, Michael Dawson, is a better centre half than Ferdinand anyway.
If I was Capello I wouldn't risk Rooney, wouldn't take that drunken cow on rollerskates, Heskey, and would have taken Steve Harper instead of Calamity James.
I agree with Halo. Once we meet the technically superior sides (if we get out the group stages, which ain't a given) we're funked.
The only thing that can save us is if Capello gets his tactics spot on. Like don't let Lampard take a penalty. Please.

    Re: England vs America

Joey, cannot fault your synopsis at all, James Nooooooo please! Rooney will be finding he local hookers more attractive than football, Heskey.. past his prime now, and I agree if Capello can get the tactics right and we dont sit back and defend one we get a 1-0 lead then we may have a chance, but if England as they normally do sit back and defend a 1-0 lead then we are screwed, we need to keep attacking and scoring goals.

*dunno if Rikky wants a title change on this thread and it to be a World Cup sticky for the lenght of the tournament?? Rikky your choice.

I think it's starting to become more popular as AC Milan has been touring NA cities. They were in Montreal on Wednesday and pulled in some 48K fans in a 76K stadium to play against our Impact. I'm sure every Italian from 100 miles around was there! :-D

They also filled the Chicago stadium last Sunday with the 20K max. Mind you, these are maximum numbers from a real team visiting.;) I don't think NA will ever embrace soccer as passionately as the rest of the world because they want to see action for the most part.

Also, the whole schedule of games will be shown on our CBC over the air, I believe that's a first.

If the US beat us in a week the viewing figures stateside will shoot up.

The security for the match will have to be tight with around 74,978 and 22 US fans plus the team all under one roof, all we need is an Israel referee and we got ourselves a game!

This is true. I live in the U.S. and always have. In talking to people on msn they talk about the 'cup' and also F1. I sadly tell them that neither is a "real sport" to many in America. I for example couldn't name one person on our team.

    Re: England vs America

How can football not be a 'real sport'? It's the most popular spectator sport on earth! Millions watch and play the game every week. If there's one thing that spoils it, it's the owners that buy clubs as real life Subbuteo games, get involved with the running of the team and spoil the equilibrium of the manager/player relationship. And too much money.
Most of the American national team play in Europe, and quite a few play in the Premier League, considered the strongest league in the world. And that's no mean feat for a kid from the South Side in the ghettoes of Harlem or whatever. Or Bel Air.....
I thought the same way about your American football. Then I watched a couple of games, learned the rules, the tactics, positions etc and now I watch it religiously during the season. Hate baseball, though. Boooooooooring.

lol Honestly thats how I thought this thread was gonna go, but most here are too bloody nice :-D

Ok, here's my input... to the English guys in this thread, where is your patriotism? We are English!... we will plough through any and all opponents like Brock Lesner angrily charging through a male hairdressers :-D
Thats the attitude we should have, the trouble with us English in football (named FOOTball because you use your FEET :p ) we have always had the "At least we tried" attitude, happy with second best, not enough drive for the win.
Bottom line is and all of you should know this, anything can happen and it's impossible to predict... surely you know the good old quote "Football, it's a funny ol' game"
How about just cheering on your team and hoping they will win? :strong

@Buck... I think you might want to rephrase your comment to "Here in the US Football isn't as popular as the rest of the world" :p
Americans have this illusion the Superbowl is the most watch event in sports... sorry to shatter your dreams but apart from North America only a very small percentage of people watch it... World Cup?... hundreds of countries glued to tv's and pack bars and pubs to watch whether your team is in it or not. Football is the bisggest and most popular Sport on earth, the whole money/business side of it came from players seeing how American football and Baseball players are super rich, it's the American sports that turned other sports into money makers.

Living in North America I have had the whole "Football vs Soccer" argument a million times.... the argument ends in 1 question... "The world governing body of the sport is called FIFA.... not FISA"

The world cup will hopfully be the spectacle it always should be and I hope my home team wipe the floor with everyone.... now who's with me :strong

    More like it Rikky? :-D

I agree watching baseball is rather boring. I did state "to many in America" meaning it doesn't have a large following. Me myself am not into many sports viewing. I would rather watch motocross than the super bowl. Money destroys the majority of the sports here also. Look at some of the contracts in the NFL, the players are not held accountable to being role models that they are to many. They play the game on Sunday then on Monday get pulled over with two hookers in the car with a 8-ball of coke with a gun under the seat.

So, help me out. Why is the US playing football this time of year? The superbowl was a few months ago. Did England actually start playing real football, or did the US start playing kickball? :-D

Just joking, not a soccer fan. Have fun watching the game. I am up for a post game riot, seems that is popular with soccer. :-D

    I predict a riot. I predict a riot.
The World Cup is held in the northern hemisphere early summer when all the major leagues are finished. I suppose it's a good time of year as it's
late spring on north earth and late autumn on south earth.
I'd love to visit S Africa for this. But I'm skint. Anyone else like to join me in abandoning hope of going to the World Cup? :cry

No, no , no, it's not post game riots, dear oh dear.....it's "a ruk" which eventually turns into all out war!! :-D
It's funny, I was reading the other day how most European nations dread hosting a Football tourny if England are involved, can't say I blame them, we can be a bit stupid when it comes down to football. 2006 we were knocked out by Portugal... so what did the fans in England do?.... Start smashing up all the kebab houses... yeah well done lads, kebab houses are mainly Turkish rolleyes

I've often seen it as tribal and most of those involved are there for the fight, not the sport, not so much now but back in the 80's... Millwall vs Chelsea anyone?.... people throwing darts across the stadiums and sharpend coins, weapon of choice was the Stanley (exacto) knife.
Wasn't it the Liverpool fans got us banned from Europe for 5 years in the late 80's/early 90's?
And I remember several times when they clashed with the Red army.

Thankfully it's calmed down quite a bit now lol... they all got old :-D

I'm thinking about going into Manchester to watch it on the big screen on Saturday, get shit faced and scream as loud as I can and if we lose 'which is impossible really' we can get into a fight and beat up some Mancunians :-D

This is the only time I throw logic out of the window Nedlamar once every four years, nationalism is illogical, the game of football is a stupid game where men kick a dead bit of cow around for 90mins but when England score and win there isn't a drug out there that can touch that feeling :cool

Maybe us Brits are a little nuts...

You know what Rikky, that feeling I was experiencing durin the Canada vs USA Olympic Hockey final was the same feeling I've had when England play every match, I've yet to experience England in a world cup final, I will happily quit my job to be able to watch it.
I was just this minute explaining to my boy just how big Football is outside North America and when England play...well realistically speaking it is our Sport... the national pride throughout the country is electrifying.
Win lose or draw... England play and nothing else matters.....Win, and it's indescribable.

You know I'm removing the penalty joke from my sig too its just too negative,if we keep saying we can't score penalties we never will.

I have a theory as why we're bad at penalties,I think its because the country puts so much pressure on the players unlike practically every other footballing country we actually say out loud we think England are gonna lose or we can't score penalties its like a self fulfilling prophecy.

If you said something like that in Italy or Argentina you'd get stabbed!

EDIT what we need in England is less logical reasoning and more balls out passion,I'm often guilty of that.

Interesting point actually,we are always the team who is cleaner than white,we want a good honest game played by the rules.

Every other team would take weapons to the game if they thought the ref wouldn't see them:-D

I do agree with the way we play the game because I see it as an extension of British society but due to Iraq I don't think however clean we play the game other countries will start thinking we're decent people so we may as well start stomping on the other teams nuts while they're on the ground we've nothing to lose.

And our players are gonna get their nuts stomped on anyway,we need to do what the Italian and South American teams do,find a player with a weak temperament and whisper a threat about killing his family to get him sent off.

    Remember the Zidane headbutt?

Here in Montreal, whenever there's a riot expected, the gangs hire a few rabble rousers to 'get things going' and occupy the police while they hit the electronic and jewelry stores a few miles away with impunity knowing their chances are good at not getting caught.:(

Starting to see many England (Georges Cross) flags going up on houses and cars, dunno if the folks here in the USA are seeing any patriotism in following the team in this competition.
