So Im pretty sure i downloaded a bad file. the issue started almost a week ago. after that my google searches kept getting redirected to random ad sites. I even had something try to phish my credit card/personal information. My computer started seizing randomly but not when id be running a program like sc2 beta. I ran spybot a few times and it was coming up with stuff before but i havent gotten anything since. after running combofix i dont seem to be having anymore issues, my google searches arent redirected but now they are extremely slow. I tried using bing and its runs normally.

so i went through all the steps and heres the good stuff.

    some information
running windows xp sp3 and using mcafee which doesnt seem to do much good ever.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!
You ran this out of order and will need to run it again and attach a new log. MGtools should have been the last scan to run. Also make sure you download and use the current version from the link in the READ & RUN ME.

No this is not necessary; however it could become necessary to uninstall McAfee while trying to fix this. Take no action on this yet! I will tell you if it becomes necessary to remove McAfee.

Go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop
    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bold command into Run box and hit Enter.
    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -v
    • Follow the instructions to type in "delete" when it asks you what to do when if finds something.
    • When done, a log file should be created on your C: drive named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

dont think it found anything malicious.
i really appreciate the help. its pretty nuts that you do this for every poor schmuck that posts here.

also a note. im getting redirected from google searches again. its quick though and not super slow like it was when it was temporarily "resolved"

Okay you have a master boot record (MBR) infection.

Please download HelpAsst_mebroot_fix.exe by noahdfear and save it to your Desktop
    • Double click HelpAsst_mebroot_fix.exe to run it and follow any prompts.
      • If the tool detects an mbr infection
        • please allow it to run mbr -f and shutdown your computer.
        • Upon restarting, please wait about 5 minutes after bootup, and then click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.
          • helpasst -mbrt
        • Make sure you leave a space between helpasst and -mbrt
        • When it completes, a log will open.
        • Attach this log to your next message.
      • If the tool DOES NOT detect an mbr infection and completes running:
        • Click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.
          • mbr -f
        • Make sure you leave a space between mbr and the -f
        • Now, please do the Start>Run>mbr -f command a second time.
        • Now shut down the computer (do not restart, you must shut it down), wait a few minutes then start it back up.
        • Give it about 5 minutes after the bootup and then click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.
          • helpasst -mbrt
        • Make sure you leave a space between helpasst and -mbrt
        • When it completes, a log will open.
        • Attach this log to your next message.
**Important note to Dell users - fixing the mbr may prevent access the the Dell Restore Utility, which allows you to press a key on startup and revert your computer to a factory delivered state. There are a couple of known fixes for said condition, though the methods are somewhat advanced. If you are unwilling to take such a risk, you should not allow the tool to execute mbr -f nor execute the command manually, and you will either need to restore your computer to a factory state or allow your computer to remain having an infected mbr (the latter not recommended).

No matter what happens with the above, attach the above logs and then immediately continue with the below in normal boot mode!

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Do not change any check box options!!
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:
    • Now click the Execute button.
    • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    • Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.
Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\avenger.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

whew! well there was an MRB infection.
ill see how it runs, so far so good.

if all is resolved, the programs i should keep are malwarebytes and SAS?
theres a special way to remove combofix so the settings reset or something right?

Your logs are clean. You just need to uninstall Java(TM) 6 Update 17 which is out of date.

Now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

when i double click mgclean.bat i get the message, "the system cannot find the file specified"

i couldnt find hijack this on the add/remove list either.
