I refuse to participate in the World (male reproduction organ protection) Cup. :-D

I don't like it because it bores me. If you enjoy it, then great! Also, the games will be on TV here at like 7AM. WTF? I am going to get up and toss some eggs on the grill and have some beer at 7?? Love my beer but really...;)

Why are there so many World Cups?

This thread is about the FIFA World Cup.

They ISSf has this one: http://archerfish.org/issf-world-cup-shotgun-dorset-gbr/ Now that is an interesting sport. :-D

Seems there is one for Rugby: http://www.rugbyworldcup.com/

And let's not forget the ISAF Word Cup. http://www.sailing.org/worldcup/home.php

So, you sail to Africa, shoot some Skeet, win a game of Rugby, then go on to play some kickball. :-D

Then there is archery. You shoot the kickball? :confused http://www.archerycopenhagen.com/

Yee Gods, the insects have one as well!!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cricket_World_Cup

There is also a Hockey World Cup, AMF Futsal World Cup, Ice Hockey World Cup (they play hockey off the ice? :confused), FIFA Woman's World Cup (WTF)?, Women's Hockey and Rugby World Cup, Speed skating World Cup, Volleyball Word Cup, and the FINA Water Polo World Cup.

Do they not realize trophies can be made in non cup shapes? :-D

For the truly soccer aficionados there's only one World Cup :-D :-D :-D

Other cups don't even come close or don't exist in their eyes.

National Pride comes also into play with the participating countries competing. These countries become like a giant madhouse every 4 years, sorta the Olympics but in soccer.

I know what you mean I don't watch football throughout the year the game of football doesn't really appeal to me but the world cup is different ,its your country your supporting.

Think if it like this, the USA team hasn't been running as long as the others, not many Americans know about the cup or care who wins such as your self, imagine if you could win the cup that you don't really care about away from all the other countries that want it more than life, many of them who are anti American because the wars ect. Just as they are anti British.

Then the cup will sit in America for four years as a big FU to the rest of the world.

    Muhahaha!

    :-D

Can't quite remember which tourny it was but all the pubs in England were open at 6:30-7AM :-D

@Rikky... Dude, don't tempt fate. Although if.... IF the USA won the cup could you imagine the state of the internet? :-D it would be all out cyber wars. :major

Right. Seeing as USAers and Canucks can't recognise THE World Cup, I refuse to recognise winning the Vince Lombardi Trophy and the hockey world cup as legitimate sporting achievements. So there!!

Unless the Vikings win a Superbowl. :cool

What???!!! At least in hockey it's country Vs. country! As opposed to the so called 'World Series'.rolleyes One could at least make a few teams from the Latino contingent and call it the 'America's Cup'.;)

I'd be very surprised if after five so beers the second world war isn't brought and how we wouldn't even have a team if the Americans hadn't saved us.

That's what I'd open with if if was American my team had just lost:-D

One thing I'd like to see this year is penalties called for fake injuries! I saw the world cup for the first time in 2K6 and I couldn't believe the dives everyone was taking!:eek They'd be taken off in a stretcher only to come back a little later whereas the alledged perpetrator has a card penalty unfairly dealt to him for the rest of the game.

Sadly, I think it'll be the same this year. Oh look mommy, he hurt me!:cryrolleyes The Russians were pretty good at diving in hockey in the 70's, not any more!;) They get caught now!:cool

Not a bad game and a draw between the two was really a win for RSA as Mexico have a good team. Yes Oma, vuvuzela is the correct spelling for the horns from SA that are being used at this game.

No, perfect sense for those that watched the game as Mexico did have the run of play and where the stronger team, but likely out of that group Mexico and RSA will go through.

RSA played well, though. I was pleasantly surprised. Hope they play well throughout the tournament and give a good account of themselves.
And France go out. Come on Uruguay.....

Blowing horns the SA use instead of their voices I suppose. I hear it as a huge swarm of bees. I wanna hear voices such as "hup Holland hup.... etc. :-D Canada is not participating. :cry

Same here and hope they'll use their horns (vuvuzelas) only when their own SA team plays. Now hearing Uruguay and France playing, same bees..... annoying. Hope we don't get stung (deaf) in the end. :cry

I've just seen them blowing them in the crowd and remembered the news stories about them,so that's what they sound like, damn it does sound like a swarm of bee's.

I hope they ban them for the next matches this sucks or blows whatever...

I agree. But I walked away impressed with RSA. It's always nice to see an underdog host country do well. Hopefully this carries over to their future matches.

I think you have that spot on in that RSA did play a hell of a great game and I hope they will progress through to the next stages, I think they will be that 1st or 2nd in the group.

Now have a BBQ and some Michelob ready for tomorrow :p :)

I think RSA were better towards the end of the game and deserved to win.

The France-Uruguay match was simply dire. France just didn't seem to want it at all.

Watch Oguchi Onyewu have a blinder against England. He used to play at centre half in the Premiership for Newcastle and he was absolutely dreadful. He's now at AC Milan and is apparently playing well there.
We got him on loan from Standard Liege, where he was highly regarded.
Did anyone know that the US was once ranked 8th in the world? They are currently 14th in the world and first on the North American continent.
I think tonight's game might be harder than England thinks.
    Still.....In-ger-lind. In-ger-lind, In-ger-lind, In-ger-lind.

So I was talking about this last night with my husband and we were saying we didn't know much about it.

I did just look it up and saw it happens every 4 years like the Olympics.

Since the teams are by country, does that mean you have to be a citizen of the country to be on the team? Basic stupid question, but just curious.

  50. joey off the street

joey off the street Lounge Lizard No.1

Generally, yes. Sometimes players are eligible to play for a country through ancestral links. Say, for example, a player is born in England to Scottish parents, he is then eligible to play for either country. It goes back even to grandparents and great grandparents.
Different criteria apply for Ireland. If your great grandad had a pint of Guinness once, you can play for Eire :-D
