E-machine wired 32bit desktop running XP to cable

I cannot connect to the internet on this machine. I keep getting "limited or no connectivity" message and when I try to repair I get "unable to renew ip".

So I thought it all started when I had a virus since that is the last time I connected with this machine. Also I have two netbooks running different operating versions and they wirelessly connect just fine. But I just got cleared over at the malware forum so it definitely isn't that. I did switch ISPs from DSL to Cable so that might have something to do with it.

Right now I'm wired to my router because I don't have the cable to plug directly into the modem. I've tried netsh and manually configuring the IP address and repairing/refreshing the winsock and I've updated the ethernet driver. Though I wouldn't be opposed to doing anything I've already done again.

I'm very cooperative and any help would be very much appreciated.

Go to start / run / type: cmd --> once it opens type:

    ipconfig /all

Post the results as well as the results from one of the machines that does connect.

Do you have any ! ? or other marks in your device manager?

Have you tried a hard reset of the modem (cable) box?
Do you also use a router?
    Power down EVERYTHING.
    Wait several minutes.
    Power up modem.
When all lights are burning steady, then power up the router.
Once router is stable, power up your machines.

Did you click "fix it" within that site? You should use IE, btw. If it is on another computer that you checked that, then try:

Click START, then RUN, then type in:

netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt (press enter)
netsh winsock reset catalog (press enter)

    now, renew your ip with:

    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew

    and, might as well

    ipconfig /flushdns

Very good chance your NIC card is shot. You may wish to purchase ( usually under $40 ) a USB wifi adapter and see if that gets you connected. The other alternative would be to take the computer to someone elses house and see if it will connect thru their router.

    Another question:

I assume you have tried to use a static IP that is on the same subnet as your router?

@theefool: I went through the procedure with my router's manufacturer help line. Can't remember the exact results, but (obviously) didn't get me online.

@TimW: Would a broken NIC card stop me from connecting to my modem via usb?

Also I read about two other issues: could it be electronic noise? Could my cable provider be blocking more that x number of connections?

I am so appreciative of all the help so far. This forum is superior.

    Thanks. Now;

I was seeing your ipconfig info, you have IP but not Gateway,

    Let's see your ipconfig info

Heres the wich one is not working A Computer

    Autoconfiguration IP Address. . . : 169.254.19.22
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

And this is the notebook working B Computer
    IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.10.10.100
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 10.10.10.1

I have some questions, why is resolving you PC A in a different ip range than the notebook PC B?

    > i guess both are going out to the same router/modem right?

    If you type ipconfig /release, and you can't release to "0.0.0.0" IP, are four ways for this;

    1. Your network adapter is broken
    2. Your Lan Cable is broken
    3. Your Default Windows TCP/IP Configuration is damaged and can't be repaired
    4. There still a virus or the damage of one virus persist in the computer.

    Questions

I want to know if your device is correctly insalled. Did you check is working properly?

    Go from basic to complex;

*Control Panel >System >Device Manager > There shouldn't any device with yellow advice.

    * Did you check the cable is working propierly, maybe it's broken is common to get limited conectivity when LAN Cable is broken. Try another cable.

    * What about firewalls, did you disable them all?

    Possible Easy Solutions

    1. type nbtstat -n in the command line (Start > Run > cmd) and paste result here.

    2. Do a ping to your self and paste result here, in command line type ping localhost

    3. Go to your network card settings and put it all in automatic, delete fields that you've typed something.

    4. Do again ipconfig /release

    5. Do this: Start > run > drivers [it will open a folder, go into "etc folder", there you will find a file called hosts open it with a notepad, there only you sould found: 127.0.0.1 localhost if you have any other information above that copy it and paste it here.

    6. Restart in Safe Mode with Network Conectivity, delete your Network device in Device Manager, install it again, do past 1 , 2 and 4 look if any changed.

Our objective is release that IP to 0.0.0.0, to show us we got control over the ip configuration and no malware or virus.

    Possible Test not easy Solutions

    - Download ubuntu, use it from CD and check if you can connect to a network (that test two things, the lan cable and network adapter)

    Good luck.

    A. If you don't know why you're not as tech savvy as you claim to be, and you shouldn't be trying to help people on this forum.

    B. I'm going to take my help from the admins because I've followed you on other threads and you have no idea what you're doing.

    C. Half of the stuff you posted for me to do makes no sense.

I know I'm still a noob but I can already tell you are going to damage someones system someday. Thanks for trying to help, but leave it to the certified guys.

Also if you read the entire thread you're posting in you wouldn't ask such dumb questions.

No, it is just not allowing you to connect thru the built in NIC card. How old is the computer? Is the NIC card built into the motherboard? A USB dongle should come with the software for you to "discover" the wireless network and connect to it.

Not that I am aware of. As long as you have a wireless router, you should be able to connect as many as you want. All it would do is to slow down the speeds.

  19. theefool

    theefool Geekified

On the problem computer, is there a reason why you are using both the nic and the USB device connected to the modem? From the list it appears you are using USB to connect, instead of the ethernet port. Or both?

  20. theefool

    theefool Geekified

Another item that itmortiz did state, have you tried uninstalling the drivers for the nic? Then either allowing your computer to install the drivers or install updated nic drivers?

Don't take it personally, itmortiz. People have a tendency to express their frustrations about an issue toward others. Wrong as it is, it happens. As long as you are expressing possible answers from your own experiences and not just copy/pasted type suggestions from web searches, you are fine. :major

Nic card being broken would not prevent you from connecting via USB. Two completely different interfaces.
Either one should work just fine.

The 169.x.x.x address you are seeing is what is called an APIPA address. This is an address assigned to a Windows PC when it is unable to obtain an address via DHCP. And here is why it can't:

    Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : TOKYO
    Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . :
    Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Broadcast
    IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
    WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : Yes <<<<<<<<

This setting is basically overriding the functionality of DHCP.

To fix this you must edit the registry...do this at your own risk. I can tell you this is a documented issue however.

    Click start, run, type regedit

    click the plus beside HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    then SYSTEM
    then CurrentControlSet
    Services
    NetBT
    Parameters
    EnableProxy

Double click on EnableProxy and set the value to zero.

Reboot your PC and run ipconfig /all

you should see the WINS Proxy enable at No

You should also now be ale to obtain an IP address.

Hope this works for you :)

    Ok.

Cables: At the time of ipconfig /all that I posted earlier I had both ethernet and usb connected to my cable modem, silly I know. I have tried them separately with no luck. I have also connected from netbook to modem with both to check if it's the wiring and got online fine. The usb cable is from a printer I had that no longer works if that is of any help. I didn't get a usb dongle upon purchase because my isp installed my hardware and I didn't have the problem computer virus free at the time.

Drivers: I did the uninstall with no luck and I have updated them as well with similar results.

On the proxy suggestion. I followed the steps but when I rebooted and did a new ipconfig /all it's still showing that I still have the WINS proxy enabled. I checked the registry and sure enough the value is 2 not 0. What does that reveal?

Also I apologize to everyone else too for losing it there. You all are very kind and amazing at what you do.

    Hi

Just a very quick question, in that if you open up your Network Connections folder how many LAN connections are listed (just noticed the number 8 on your earlier ipconfig listing)? as multiple drivers for the same hardware can at times cause a conflict and the LAN to be very unstable, so worth uninstalling all and installing afresh again. The number can be irrelevent as it just means you may have been trying to fix this by re-installing the driver and that you only now have one LAN connection driver listed, but its worth a look as I have come across this happening before when two LAN connections are listed for same hardware.

Also try if not already to boot into Safe Mode with Netorking (F8 at boot) and see if you have a stable connection, this could highlight a 3rd party application causing this.

  31. TimW

Then it wouldnt surprise me if the NIC card is dead. :(
You may have to use either a USB wifi or a card reader wifi adapter.

Yes that is the case on the number of connections, only one, just re-installing driver multiple times.

Tried the Safe Mode boot as administrator, no connection there.

@TimW--> I don't have a usb wifi, but I do have a wired usb cable that isn't connecting either. Does it have to be wifi?

Although, here's something: I did try to update the driver (the default one is out of date) do I need to uninstall the default included one? I guess I'm confused as to what constitutes having more than one driver. If I need to uninstall the old one how do I do that? When I uninstall it doesn't windows just detect it again?

The WINS proxy problem is what is causing you to not be able to get online. The value has to be saved a 0. If it is till showing 2 then it did not save the change. Until you can get that disable, you will not be able to get online with your current ISP.

@TimW-->usb wired to my cable modem. I get the wifi thing, I will buy that if that is what I need, but I just want to make sure before I buy something that won't work for me. Doesn't the fact that I cannot connect to my modem via usb or ethernet indicate that I have a problem other that with the NIC card? (or another problem in addition to broken card?)

@ninja.skilz-->How do I get it to save the change?

  38. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

As soon as you change the registry key to 0, then hit F5. Then exit out. Do that before you purchase anything. I have never heard of a usb cable being the connection to a router. :confused

Let me expand so we're clear. My modem and router are separate. I have a motorola modem and a linksys router. On the back of the modem is a square usb port, that fits the end of my usb cable and the cable plugs directly into the flat usb port on the back of my cpu.

Also refreshing the registry didn't work.

When you right click your network icon and choose properties and click on the tcp/ip and choose properties, under the tcp/ip tab you should have an advanced settings. When you open that what is there?
It should show your WINS / proxy setting.

Ah, so, you are using the usb connection between your computer and your modem. I also have that usb port on the back of my modem. But, I don't use it.

Who is your ISP and what is the manufacturer of the modem? Have you thought about just buying a PCI nic to use instead of the onboard? We have done that at work quite a few times.

  48. Cara9

On my cable modem, I also have the USB connection.
Even though the regular cable connector worked, I had to install a driver for the USB to function. Suddenlink did provide a disk just for that purpose.

I believe that the OP has already tried a straight ethernet cable without luck. So I would recommend the USB Wifi adapter. Not sure of the price difference, but it should be easier to install and configure.
