Extremely long start up times when I shut down/power on but not when I use hibernate

I recently reformatted my Toshiba laptop that I use for gaming. I'm pretty good with keeping viruses, adware, spyware, etc off of my computer; so this problem really confuses me.

Problem: When I do the normal shut down/power on option my computer takes massive amounts of time to start up. It gets to the desktop screen fairly quick, but loading basic programs and connecting to the internet takes roughly 10 full minutes. When I hibernate to turn off my computer the start up time is basically 30 sec (as it should be with this computer)

Also, I don't have many programs flooding my start up. Just the basics needed to run a healthy computer. Thank you for your support.

You said you only have the basics running. What all is present in the task manager? What anti-virus program are you running?

Try watching the task manager as soon as you can get it open to see what is slowing things down.

Download and run this. Click on the Startup Info listing.

What is listed there. Good program for keeping an eye out.

Temp cache files make startup slow. try to send them all to recycler bin.

[enable folder option "see hidden files and folders"]

    C:\Documments and Settings\your user \Local Settings \Temp

Do same with content of folders prefetch and temp.

    C:\Windows\temp
    C:\windows\prefetch

*Also if you're starting your computer with cable (not wireless) dissconnect the cable from laptop and check if it initialize faster.

    Tell us results.

You do not want to remove prefetch items all the time. You could say it is a cache of most of your regular executables that you run, day to day. In some cases, when there is a virus, out there, then yes. Other times, don't just remove them.

That's true, but i guess he haven't cleaned it in months. And it's a good practice (for me do it like one or twice per month)

Thanks The Fool for usefull link :)

btw, i must add i have to install every day a lot of different software for tests and it loads unnecessary prefetch files.

    Thanks again for the link.

Clearing out the prefetch IS good for people who do a lot of testing, but that is not a good thing for the average user who has only a few they use on a regular basis.
I have seen that excessive clearing can slow the machine down on a fresh boot up.

The original post says he did a recent format and reinstall. Clearing the prefetch would not be a likely problem on something with a fresh install.

Point in case, my laptop has NEVER had the prefetch files cleared and it runs very strong including fast boot and shutdown. It's been 2 or 3 years since I reinstalled the OS on it.
