What do I need to speed up streaming video?

    Dear Anyone.

I did have a 1.6ghz processor, and 1gig RAM, and every Internet TV station I tried to stream was jerky and choppy, high-res and lo-res both. So fine, I thought, and I bought another gig of RAM and an AMD2 compatible dualcore processor. Thing is, this hasn't made any difference. I now have a MUCH faster processor (3 Gig), twice the amount of RAM and I can't watch streaming video any less choppily than when I had 1.6ghz and 1gig RAM!!

So what ARE the factors that control streaming video and how do I make it stream more smoothly? I'm not watching dodgy movies, just Internet stations like Luxe TV (that station's the reason I updated my system, but it hasn't helped.)

    Would overclocking the processor help?

    Yours puzzledly

    Hi

Who is your ISP and what speed internet connection do you pay for as around 3Mbit/s is basic low end for good streaming of TV off the internet any lower and you will have choppy video experience, CPU and Ram do add to this but in the end its the speed of your internet connection thats needed to keep media smooth.

Try closing your Antivirus and Firewall applications to test, also what Windows version and Service Pack do you have?

    Hi Thanks for answering.

Told you I made noobs look like Einstein! Windows XP, SP3. When I connect to the Net, it says I have 5.2mbps. I've downloaded an app. that works with VLC and gives you 70 channels, it's called BTV. Luxe TV, my fave, is number 55 if that helps.

The movie channels usually stream OK, they've got better since I've upgraded. I didn't realise the Internet speed made a difference, I thought if my system was faster, then the stream could be shown faster. Seemed logical! Al Jazeera, which I just use as a benchmark because I don't watch it, is better. Luxe TV hasn't changed. The music channels seem the same/a little better. I haven't tested all the others, because I've never watched most of them anyway so I wouldn't know if they were any better or not - sorry.

If you need any more info, just ask.

    Yours respectfully

I agree with Halo. You could have the fastest PC possible, add L2N, but it is still only going to display at the "speed of the bandwidth from the ISP" and or hosting site. If slow it will display impaired visual content but your speed seems fine. Is it "other activity" occurring while your streaming (P2P, Malware, shared router, unsecure network, etc)

Your video card (or built-in video on motherboard) can make a difference but if the movies stream OK than I would agree with the others that it's a combo of your internet speed and the site the TV is streaming from. If you've ever seen a trace route you'd be amazed just where your data gets routed thru to get from where it originates to your PC.

Dear Everyone. Thank you for helping me.

I'm trying to stream Luxe right now, with little success as usual. Here's a list, from Windows Manager, of all the software that's running on my machine. I don't know what's safe to turn off - sorry, perhaps you could tell me.

    Here it is...

    360rp.exe, alg.exe, avantsvc.exe, AvantUI.exe, csrss.exe, explorer.
    exe, firefox.exe, jqs.exe, lsass.exe, NMSAccessU.exe, rwsvc32.exe, nvsvc32.exe, OctoshaperClient.exe, oodiag.exe, oodtray.exe, rapimgr.exe, services.exe, smss.exe, spoolsv.exe, svchost.exe (6 of thise!) System, System Idle Process, taskmgr.exe, UUSEEMediaCenter.exe (twice), UUSee Player, UUUpgrade.exe, Wcescomm.exe, Winlogon.exe., Wordpad, wsauclt.exe.

Can I safely turn anything off while I'm streaming Video?

    Yours respectfully

    Chris
