About two weeks ago I noticed my computer slowed down drastically and Google links were being redirected in Firefox and Internet Explorer through adwords.onlinesecuregroup.com. Chrome browser stills works fine, although it's a little slow. Also noticed three Help Assistant folders appeared in the Document and Settings folder. Appears to be a rootkit infection...Mebroot/Sinowal maybe. Went step by step through your XP cleaning procedures and ran all programs suggested, but still have the same problems. I have attached SASlog.txt, Malwarebytes log, RRlog.txt and Combofix.txt (I also ran MLogs.exe but it didn't generate an Mlogs.zip...should I run it again?) and would greatly appreciate any help you can give to remove the infection. Thanks in advance for your help.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

It's MGtools.exe that you run and where exactly are you looking for the MGlogs.zip file?

Please download HelpAsst_mebroot_fix.exe by noahdfear and save it to your Desktop
    • Double click HelpAsst_mebroot_fix.exe to run it and follow any prompts.
      • If the tool detects an mbr infection
        • please allow it to run mbr -f and shutdown your computer.
        • Upon restarting, please wait about 5 minutes after bootup, and then click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.
          • helpasst -mbrt
        • Make sure you leave a space between helpasst and -mbrt
        • When it completes, a log will open.
        • Attach this log to your next message.
      • If the tool DOES NOT detect an mbr infection and completes running:
        • Click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.
          • mbr -f
        • Make sure you leave a space between mbr and the -f
        • Now, please do the Start>Run>mbr -f command a second time.
        • Now shut down the computer (do not restart, you must shut it down), wait a few minutes then start it back up.
        • Give it about 5 minutes after the bootup and then click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.
          • helpasst -mbrt
        • Make sure you leave a space between helpasst and -mbrt
        • When it completes, a log will open.
        • Attach this log to your next message.
**Important note to Dell users - fixing the mbr may prevent access the the Dell Restore Utility, which allows you to press a key on startup and revert your computer to a factory delivered state. There are a couple of known fixes for said condition, though the methods are somewhat advanced. If you are unwilling to take such a risk, you should not allow the tool to execute mbr -f nor execute the command manually, and you will either need to restore your computer to a factory state or allow your computer to remain having an infected mbr (the latter not recommended).

No matter what happens with the above, attach the above logs and then immediately continue with the below in normal boot mode!

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Do not change any check box options!!
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:
    • Now click the Execute button.
    • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    • Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.
Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\avenger.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. Did everything you said and the computer appears to be working fine now...not redirecting links anymore. There are still two Help Assistant duplicate folders in my Documents and Setting folder on the C drive (HelpAssistant.JAKE-J9JV7QPNT4 and HelpAssistant.JAKE-J9JV7QPNT4.000- see attached file) and there is also is a folder titled HelpAsst_backup on the C drive. Should I delete them? And, should I toggle the System Restore to clear that out also. I have attached the files you asked for.

Also, is it really safe to use this computer...I read online that once you get this infection, it really isn't safe to use the computer for any secure transactions as you can't be absolutely sure if the infection is really cured.

Thanks again for all your help. LOVE Majorgeeks.com!

These can be deleted now as they are from the malware which has been removed.

Not a problem. It is from the removal tool we ran.

There is never a 100% guarantee if that is what you are looking for; however, in all likelihood it is fine. There is more of an issue with any damage that was done while the infection was active. You may have already had passwords for any number of things stolen. Even if you have not seen any illegal activity "yet". It could occur eventually due to info that was already stolen. You really need to change all passwords for EVERYTHING. And you should check with all credit card, banks, etc for the possibility of any illegal activity.

You have a little more work to do and then final instructions.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
    Java Auto Updater
    Java(TM) 6 Update 12
    Java(TM) 6 Update 7

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: AskBar BHO - {201f27d4-3704-41d6-89c1-aa35e39143ed} - C:\Program Files\AskBarDis\bar\bin\askBar.dll
    O3 - Toolbar: Foxit Toolbar - {3041d03e-fd4b-44e0-b742-2d9b88305f98} - C:\Program Files\AskBarDis\bar\bin\askBar.dll

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
