I’m sorry but I’m unable to perform the READ & RUN ME FIRST, Malware Removal Guide steps. The problem is with my work computer that is now in physical possession of my company’s security section. I’m looking for suggestions I can forward on to them.

My company monitors its employee’s network access and my computer was flagged for visiting porn sites. I haven’t been visiting porn sites, but according to the monitoring process my computer has. They gave me a list of times that the computer had accessed the sites from May 11 to 18, 2010. I’m not sure if that is the timeframe my computer started access sites or if it started earlier. The weird thing is that no unexpected sites ever popped up on my screen.

They informed me of the issue on Wednesday June 16, 2010 and the next day at work I didn’t visit any external website on my work computer, but by 9:30 AM the browser history for the date (Thursday June 17, 2010) showed multiple external website, most of them not obvious porn sites. At no time did any external website listed in the browser history show up on the screen. It appears that websites were being visited in a background process not visible to me.

I proposed that they secure my work computer over night and that they can then observe me in the morning to verify that the behavior I had seen was occurring and that I wasn’t visiting external websites. They decided to take my computer and perform the observations on their own.

They asked me if I had install any alternate browsers on my computer and I said I didn’t believe so, but I might have since our managers have suggested that we use Firefox or Chrome since some of the tools we use work better in those browser. But I’ve always used Microsoft’s Internet Explorer Browser.

Again I’m looking for suggestions I can give to my company’s security people to look for malware and that I’m not visiting all the websites that the monitor process and my browser history are showing.

    Thanks

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

I'm sorry but there is nothing we can do for you but have you run our cleaning process so that we could determine if your PC is infected.

Your IT Department will follow their own procedures to repair your PC. In many cases IT Departments do not have the expertise to remove all forms of malware and will just resort to reinstalling. Sometimes even if they could remove the malware, their security policies will require a PC to be clean installed rather than fixing to have a better guarantee that the PC is really clean and that they did not miss anything.

Thanks chaslang I was just wondering if there was any known malware, that exhibits this behavior, I could point them to. I had hard time convincing them I wasn’t actively going to those sites, and I’m still not sure that they 100% believe me.

    again thanks

Potentially hundreds if not thousands of things could download in the background. Unless our procedure is run, we have no way of knowing whether you are infected or not. And we would have to see what our logs show to determine what type of infection.
