I used to drive an older comparable car (98 Geo Metro) with a 1L 3cyl. 5-speed stick.
    Was about the same size.
Got GREAT fuel mileage. About 50-55 mpg.;)
(Used to walk away from bigger cars on the twisty roads around here).:-D:-D

Just checked out the specs from your link.

No offense but I really hate the way smart cars look. Every time I see one drive down the street (which isn't very often) I always look to see if there is a crank on the back like a toy car has. :-D

I don't understand why American kids have so much spent on their first car when it's incredibly likely that they'll bin it. Sorry to sound judgemental or using stereotypes but I'm sure people can see it deep down.
Why not spend less on a used car with more power?

Huh, alarm system for $160. No need for that if this is the only one in town.
So, power steering is an option. You may want that also. No power steering is a PITA.

A friend of mine has a stang, just to 6 banger, 2006.... she wants a smart car *facepalm*
As for getting $16+k spent for birthday, I guess everyone is different, who are we to judge?
I got a Sony stereo for my 16th, 135GBP lol

As for the Smart car itself... well personally I would never go near one but they are aparently safe and reliable and economical, plus they are good for the enviroment.
It's the American version of this...

    http://ericgar.com/uploads/2007/04/reliantrobin.JPG

If I was spending $16k on a car it would be a '05 Stang GT no question lol... but the insurance for Dawg would be through the roof, plus he's not going to be thumping high speeds from it so maybe a good choice for first car.... dissagree with buying new anyway, especially for first car.

Enjoy it Dawg, but enjoy it responsibly, remember you will be incharge of a potentially leathal weapon, keep it as a vehicle ;)

I have a 'stang GT. ;) My daughter won't be going anywhere near it when she turns 16. :-D We keep telling her she'll be driving the mom-mobile (minivan). She doesn't find it humorous for some reason. :confused

lol Hey Laura I'm with you there, if I had a Stang my boy would not sit in the drivers seat until he's 30 :-D
Waaaayyyyy too much power for a kid, even a Grand Am or Bonnie is too much power for a 16y/o, I will insist on my boy getting a Neon or Sunfire and I've told him the same thing my dad told me "If I catch, hear or see you driving like an idiot, I'll cut your tires"
Obviously worked since I have 17 years on the road (car and bike) without a single accident with me in control :)

Hey, Dawg, just a little thing, but do your folks know you're expecting $17k for your sixteenth? It might come as a bit of a disappointment to you when you get up on your big day and you unwrap a pair of undercrackers and some deodorant.

Great car for central city driving but not great for long distances, do test drive one for a few hours on various roads (highways and country roads) as I have driven a few of these before and while nippy for a small car they are not for everyone. Feew friends who have them do complain they are harsh ride and the semi-auto box (paddle shift) is or was on the models my friends have/had is poor.

Didnt think they did a 100% electric one yet? all I know of are petrol.

Would more advise getting a BMW Mini (maybe a second hand 1 or 2yr old one) much better value and fun.

It's been my experience that these smart car drivers own the road. Perhaps my S-10 moves too slow, or takes up too much room, but they zoom around and tail-gate like no other. They're like annoying little flies. One would think the average smart car driver would be aware of the hazards of truck vs ultra-compact vehicle, but it seems this danger is lost on them.

OP, if you get the smart car, be careful. They are NOT safe if involved in a collision. This is likely, as it's your first car AND you've requested a video game to assist in driving performance.

$16,000 on a 16th birthday? My dad spent $400 and fixed up my 16th birthday present.

    http://www.cargurus.com/images/2009/03/01/11/40/pic-16945.jpeg

Pic related. It's a similar version of my 16th birthday present. A 1984 Pontiac Fiero. I was hot rodding it and it threw a rod. May it RIP...well, pieces, as it's since been parted out.

Hey Gotheight, my friend bought one of those on Ebay a few years ago. Has under 50K miles on it, and is in mint condition. Only problem he is having is that it needs a little work, and few mechanics know how to work on them.

The last time he got the oil changed, the guy opened the front trunk. :-D

One time long, long ago, the cops showed up at a party we were at. We crammed 6 people of in a Fiero GT and made our getaway. Good times... :p

My first car was a '59 Rambler, bought it for commuting to a summer job.

    $60, as is.

Brakes went out first week approaching a highway intersection. Had to jump the median to live.

Had to stop to add water ~every 15 miles. Carried a tote full at all times.

    You a lucky kid!

Oh my, first cars... My dad bought me my first. As in he paid for the car, I had to fix it. He said if you learn how to "Drive Junk", JUNK not drunk, you can drive anything. It was a '72 Plymouth Gran Fury. The rear quarter panels were nonexistent from how it sat in a barn with a leaking roof. So jumped it took, it home and start learning body work. It was supposed to be a 318 car but someone along the line stuffed a 340 with 3X2 carbs into it. I bet if he knew that I wouldn't of gotten it.

    Back to the Fiero.
    Nice looking, I'll say that.
BUT. So low to the ground you felt every single speedbump you went over.
And forget about looking over your shoulder when backing up. No way to see out the back glass.

Yup, way too much. I think they just put a top on it :-D

Yup, nothing like a birthday surprise!:-D

Really? What's so cool about a used clunker? Be sure to post pics for us! ;) I would love to see your 16th birthday gift. I won' t even tell you what I got. It sure didn't have 4 wheels. roflmao We'll be waiting!:-D

33/41 mpg? I'm surprised it is that low for such a tiny car with such a tiny engine. I'd hate to be in a car accident with that one and almost all first time drivers get in an accident. Be careful!!!

I had to save up to buy my first car; 1974 Oldsmobile Omega.

Looks like a pretty nice car if you get it for your birthday. I am 24 and even I think that kids should get crap cars for there 1st cars. I just seen way to many people in accidents/serious accidents and many deaths. I come from poor family myself but the "more money" familys all bought there kids brand new 10,000 - 25,000 cars/trucks/whatever and most of them all got wrecked or total. But I guess if you got the money then go ahead and spend it.

Good solid advice in that second video BT,get a Toyota prius Dawg girls love the whine of the electric motor as you leave the lights.

Ok I was under the impression the Smart Car was a good, safe car.... after seeing that there is even less chance you'd get me into one, sorry to say Dawg, but realistically speaking you could get soooooooooo much more for your money going with something else.

Did you mean they are scarce? As in hardly ever see one? Interesting enough, we saw 4 of them in one day in town. I guess they are really ideal for someone who only uses it within town limits. They remind me of the old saabs that were two cycle rear mounted engines.

I know what I would do on my 16th birthday with 16K but it's doesn't involve cars :-D

It involves 23 manakins,5 rolls of duck tape,19 bags of lime,2 PC's with mobile broadband,an original Kate Bush LP,a step ladder and a bottle of ketchup.

  50. DavidGP

I agree on the looks as I dont think either Nissan or Honda etc have grasped that an electric car doesnt need to look like the designer was blindfolded!

The Leaf, ouch on the RRP $32780! puts it with the Mitsubishi i-MiEV which looks no different to that of a Toyota i-Go but comes in at $58k+

Only half decient looking electric car is the Tesla (original based on the Lotus Elise) and the new Tesla Model S (base price $50k so what would you own up to having the Mitsubishi i-MiEV or the Tesla Model S???) they built from scratch HERE and my fav looking one the Venturi Fetish althought the Fetish does or did have a price tag of around $460000

I see SMART have decided to trial its Electric car in the USA, but to only a select few customers and when they do release the car by all accounts you cannot buy one, you only rent at $599 a month... ouch sizzle sizzle pop and crack < sound of me being electrocuted.
