Having looked around the web when my MS updates asked the same thing, i found no compelling reason to install it, so i will wait until such time as a program tells me it is needed

I agree with BILLMCC66, if your computer hasn`t informed you that you need .netframework 3.5 to run a certain program, I wouldn`t concern myself with installing it. I am sure opinions will vary, but then I am more a minimalist when it comes to putting things on my computer that I don`t really need at the present time. When you do install a program that requires 3.5, don`t worry, the computer well let you know., then just download it and install.

If M$ classify it as Important, then it's important, not Optional.

    Hi Marlene

.Net Framework is basically a programming language and is needed for many application to work properly if they have been programmed in .Net to start with and more info http://www.microsoft.com/net/ its a bit like Java.

Do you need it well no, unless an application doesnt work, one noteable application that needs .Net is if you have an ATi graphic card and use the Catalyst Control Centre as that will not work properly without .Net

Sadly its not always that the PC will tell you if you need .Net or not for an application to work, the error messages can be gobbledgook and vague to the application just not starting, so this then gives you no clue to what the issue could be and force you to troubleshoot your PC for software errors that are not linked to the OS or Malware.

.Net 3.5 should be a default install and already on Windows 7 iirc, so is this an update for .Net 3.5? just checked the update list as the .Net 3.5 is an SP1 rollup and info on the update is HERE

Personally as you already have .Net 3.5 on your PC I would install this one as a Service Pack, fixes any security issues and bugs etc

    Hi Guys,
Thank you for all your help,I was browsing the internet on the subject and I ran across this site that will tell you if Net Framework is installed on you computer. Well I already have 2.0 on my PC so 3.5 would be an upgrade,I will install the newer version.

    Thanks again,

That isn't how it works. 3.5 isn't an upgrade to 2.0, it's a separate installation, so if you install 3.5 you will end up with both.

However on my Win 7 today's update was an update to 3.5 SP1, so are you sure you don't already have 3.5?

Marlene, if you look in Control Panel > Programs and Features in the left pane, Turn Windows Features On or Off, you will find .NET 3.5.1 listed. Also, you won't find 2.0. That site doesn't work properly.

    Hey Earthling,

I figured that out when I went back to the site and it still said I had 2.0 after I installed 3.5. If you look in the registry under
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\NET Framework Setup\NDP
you'll find all your versions there. I found that last night.

    Thanks again,
    Marlene

Sadly that site is wrong, looks like it looks for .net and cannot tell the new versions and calls them .Net 2.0, likely it was not programmed to recognise any .Net higher than version 2.0.

I like you have Windows 7 and .Net 2.0 would not have been installed unless you installed it, as I mentioned .Net 3.5 is a default app installed on each build of Windows 7.

Yes you are correct on what the registry is telling you, however .Net 3.5 covers the older .Net versions and as such lists the versions its compatible with in the registry so older applciations programmed in .Net can run correctly, its a legacy feature.

If you check Add/remove as Earthling mentioned you likely will not see a reference to Microsoft .Net 2.0 Compact Framework, but only Microsoft .Net 3.5 Compact Framework.

Similar to my listing of .Net 3.5 below in Windows 7 x64, I do have .Net 4.0 installed though as well but this is only if you install it doesnt come as an update.

I also have the .Net 2.0 and 3.0 references in the registry, but no .Net 2.0 or 3.0 in the add/remove list, this is due to as I mentioend earlier the legacy options of the older .Net versions listed so older apps run correctly.

Yes 3.5 does come installed with windows 7 and also you need 3.5 net framework to work windows live messenger without that live messenger will not work.

Also some games require 3.5 net framework to play online gaming.

Hi Marlene: Glad you asked that question. I have one on the same matter. I have Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit with service pack 2. Can I and should I download service pack 3.5?
