I recently loaded a vocational test program onto my new computer. It works well but an annoying pop-up appears every every 30 seconds saying that it cannot find this file: machnm1.exe The test supplier said to find this file then delete it and all will be well. I am unable to find the file so far. My computer's OS is Windows XP Pro with 4GB RAM and 500GB HD capacity. Any advice would be appreciated.

That's strange advice, delete the file the program is looking for?? Seems the supplier should be pointing you in how to get that program that their program is looking for. :confused

Does this only occur when you are running this program? If yes, I think you need to talk to the supplier again, perhaps a higher-up person.

But, back to that, are you including hidden files in your search? Searching entire computer? Using XP's search function I assume?

Oh, and how many times a grandpa? I'm about to have number 5!

I agree that the advice is strange but I have worked for many years with this supplier and this particular tech. She admitted that this is a flaw which appeared in the recently-revised software but to try and find it anyways and delete it. I used the Search function, covering all files and folders including hidden ones. It seems to me that I once read that it should be easy to find all .exe files (as a group). So far I haven't been lucky in this regard. Any other ideas? Thanks for your advice so far.

The pop-up occurs at the time of loading and recurs every 30 seconds or so.

Oh, by the way, 2 grandsons to date, thanks for asking.

Download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.

    Download Mirror #1

    Download Mirror #2

    • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it. (If you are using Vista, please right-click and select run as administartor)
    • A blank Windows shall open with the title "SystemLook v1.0-by Jpshortstuff".
    • Copy and Paste the content of the following codebox into the main textfield under "File":

    Code:
    :filefind
    machnm1.exe
    • Please Confirm everything is copied and Pasted as I have provided above
    • Click the Look button to start the scan.
    • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. You can close this notepad window as the log will already be saved as SystemLook.txt on your Desktop ( if you downloaded and ran SystemLook to your Desktop as requested ).
    • Please attach this log in your next reply.

Note: The scan may take a while from several seconds to a minute or more depending on the number of files you have and how fast your computer can perform the task.

Here's an idea, don't know if it pertains to Tim's program, but it does pertain to the Window's search.

Try shortening the search string, search your computer for just mach.

Windows will return all files with these first four letters, shouldn't be too many. I just did this search on my W7 machine, got about 30 or 40 returns. Manageable enough to sort through.

It may be that the file has a slightly different name, and this would possibly find it.

Still find it hard to believe that deleting a file will stop a program from looking for it. :confused

    Doesn't compute.
