Folks, I know you all get these from time to time, so rather than have a 1m and 1 threads on this why not have a perpetual thread on these and keep them to the new and funny ones that maybe we have not seen already.

    So have to it......

One of todays from the waste bin is,

Not American and not in school and likely wouldnt get into the US Military anyways, too old! but did like the accuracy of the amount .51c

Bare in mind I dont really look in the spam folders, mostly just quick scan for legit mail that may trigger the filters and rules I have, but mostly just right click delete the bin each week on email accounts.

Good idea to create just one on going thread for the spam. I think I got that email too :-D I rarely check my (real) email anymore since I get it all though my phone so spam is already filtered away.

This will be good for me, mostly because I never think to check my spam folder and sometimes miss mail I should've gotten. Here's today's contribution:
If only I had $500 for this fabulous Rolex knockoff I would never need to worry about eternal damnation again!

My friend used to get $15 Movado knockoff in Tijuana. When someone would remark, he would remove the watch and say "Do you want it?" The other person would light up and gush.... He used to buy 5 or 6 at a trip. ;)

I've been reading about a new type of social engineering attack people have been calling ransomware.

Essentially, the attacker detects shadier traffic coming from your network (ie. porn, or P2P), and uses the info to try to extort money out of you.

Seems like a shocking, and probably effective new technique at tricking users, so I thought I'd share the info.

That's good info, Mada... however, if your gonna do shady things on the net.. your gonna have to pay the price eventually :-D

Seems to me I read of a case where a man was setting up a meeting through one of those sex/dating sites. When he showed up at the hotel another man handed him a package of the exchanged, lurid messages and demanded $10K. But this could well be an urban legend.

I am constantly amazed by the lengths some people will go to scam people . . . and the seemingly never ending line of suckers that fall for the scams.

The increase in the "black-mail" set-up type attack is a disturbing new trend, indeed.

This is true. Never do anything on the internet (or anywhere else, for that matter) that you wouldn't want to explain to your wife (or kids, mother, husband, etc.).

"I was doing research" only works at best once . . . and is more believable if it involves something more then just perky, slightly rubenesque brunette and red haired women . . . :-o

    Really Bad E-Mail Scam

I got this today, have no idea who it is from. I like how they keep changing the spelling of 'academy'.

    "Ladies and Gents:

As you are aware Teche Area Campus has not billed acadmies for the past two years. After discussions with our parent acadmemy as well as the Cisco Regional Academy Manager, it has been decided that we will revise our CCNA support fee as follows:

Annual Fee: $300 (To include phone support and inservice activities at Baton Rouge Campus, access to NetLab, onsite visit if needed)

In addition, we will also begin billing again for our IT Essentials academies at $300 annually.

Please let me know as soon as possible if you no longer wish to be an academy. I will begin working on new support agreements. Payment will be due by August 31, 2010.

    Thanks
    Annette Faulk

Yeah, I am breaking out the credit card for them... :-D

Me, OK what’s wrong with it.
Mr Scam, There is a virus on your machine.
Me, What sort of a virus, (Bloody Nutter)
Mr Scam, Sir it is a very nasty virus, and Sir if you tell me your passwords and your email address we will be able to remove it for you, at no cost to yourself whatsoever.
Me, thank you very much, perhaps I could save you a lot of time and just give you my pin number, my mothers maiden name, what colour socks I’m wearing, my doctors name and address, my national insurance number, my wife’s bra size and my inside leg measurement.
At this point the line went dead

A spam email came my way a few years ago which turned out to be profoundly poetic (once I'd fiddled with the line spacing).

    Lucky the bell
Still full and deep of throat,
That only you and I can know.
Les deux Against this sky no longer of our world.
    My keyhole blows a gale.
    From there.
    Toward . . .
Comes up with as a means to its own end.
The snowflakes are swirling, blotting out
    They sit with their wives
All day in the sun, IV.
The Paths to Cathay coextensive with everything?
    How could they know?
This gap in time, this season not their own,
Where, as I discover as I go through
Is the moon to grow with its lament, it often sounds, instead.
But snow has gathered there, has piled
    Up,
In the dread circle hemmed by glaciers.
Are gliding toward me on the ice.
Into Bronze the sky, with no that rings,
With faithful tongue, its pious note

Somewhere, in this mad and crazy world, a minor genius missed their true vocation.

Well...the anti-Pepsi email is going around again, and also on Facebook. For the record, it was Dr. Pepper, not Pepsi, that issued cans with the Statue of Liberty and two lines from the Pledge of Allegiance on them. It happened in 2001, and it is not scheduled to appear again "soon". And it had nothing whatsoever to do with them "not wanting to offend people". Thanks for playing.

It was only later when i had a think about it "how did they know my E-mail address?

So it is obviously a virus attack from unknown sources.

    Hi Bill

Had about 10 of that type emails so far and like you on some occasions I have been awaiting a parcel, the main thing is and did this email have an attachement? is in that any emails I hbe gained from UPS, FedEX etc have not had attachements, so usual don't open attachements rule applies.

But glad your AV caught it. Also easy when due not on the ball and doing a few other tasks to just click without thinking at times, we all do it.

  35. BILLMCC66

    BILLMCC66 Bionic Belgian

No David it was not an attachment it just said "message" as you see in the first shot and when i clicked it the anti virus kicked in and it went to certification.

    Hi Bill

Had to find a PC in the building to jump on as was not in office but on phone at the time, but looking now at both images, and forgive me if I don't know the email client you are using but there looks to be an attached text file, maybe that got triggered to open or when you opened the body of the email AVG caught it, which is a good thing.

good heads up and one for folk to look at closely, iirc also instead of Dear Customer i can remember in emaiks from UPS is they know your name and add the consignment number to the email body of text.

Hope your real parcel is something techy and nice :)

Both bosses got that UPS package virus email, unfortunately they both opened it and the IT guy had to fix everyone's pc (I guess it traveled through the network). My female boss thought it was strange that only her & her husband got the email considering I was the one who did all the shipping, still she opened it anyway. I am not sure how (whoever) got their email addresses and not mine when I am the only person that handles the online shipping in the office.

    HEADS-UP: Skype phishing email

Since a few others here also have Skype accounts, I thought I'd share this email I just received.

The email is sent from the very genuine-looking email address "service@skype.com", but when hovering my mouse over the link in the email, it shows a URL that very clearly is non-Skype and fake. Hotmail has blocked a lot of the email's content, and a visit to Skype's real website verifies that nothing has been done to my account.

Be careful!!! (Shameless self-promotion of a guide I wrote on account protection basics. Everyone needs to know how to keep their log-in information safe.)

    Re: HEADS-UP: Skype phishing email

Would you consider re-writing it as a more general form than just aimed at games? Although some of it is referenced by M.A.'s link/guide, it does need to encompass all the ways you can be scammed in all forms, such as email, games, banking, etc. Perhaps it would be a good addition to the malware forum as a sticky, as we have a relatively constant plea from people with hacked games or emails.
