Hi all, haven't been here since I had smitfraud and zlob problems on my desktop back in December 2008. I consider this site my go-to for malware problems so here I am again.

This time I'm working on my parents' machine. It looks like my dad fell for one of those fake virus alert windows.

I completed all of the steps in READ & RUN ME FIRST and the Windows XP Cleaning Procedure. So, here I am. Looks like the redirects are still in place.

I know Spybot isn't in your list of programs to run - personally I find that it doesn't usually fix things, but it does seem to identify problems quickly. I ran Spybot S&D after the XP cleaning procedure and it found zlob among other things. I'm sure you guys will have a better idea when you look at the logs, but I just wanted to give you a heads up.

My logs are attached. Please advise.

    Thanks in advance.

You are way out of date with your version of SUPERAntiSpyware.
    • Please uninstall your current version (this is necessary).
    • Then download this SUPERAntiSpyware
    • Install this new version. It may tell you that you need to reboot to complete the installation. You must reboot at this time.
    • After the reboot, run SUPERAntiSpyware and immediately click the Check for Updates button to get more updates for the database.
    • Now run a new full scan of your system. And attach this new log.
Also you are about 10 database versions out of date wih Malwarebytes, so run Malwarebytes and click the Update tab. Then click the Check for Updates button so you update to the current version of the program and database. Then run a new scan with it too. Make sure you fix the problems found before saving a log. Attach the new log.

Why are you running in safe boot mode? You need to run in normal boot mode unless that is not possible and you did not say you could not run in normal mode. So please please rerun MGtools in normal boot mode and attach a new log from it too.

Also please explain what problems ( if any ) remain.

Is there a reason this PC has no protection installed?

After a few consecutive nights of 2 hours of sleep due to various reasons, I haven't even bothered making sure the apps themselves were up to date. Bah! I'll get those for you. Sorry bout that... :)

MGTools only flashed when I executed it, nothing ran. Seemed like something was stopping it. I will try scans w/ updated SAS and MB. Maybe once I do that, MGTools will run correctly. We shall see.

All of these processes required this pc's AVG to be stopped. I figured since I want to install something new anyway I'd just uninstall AVG then run the scans. This pc now has Microsoft Security Essentials which was installed since my last post.

Possibly your AV if you reenabled it. Try running it this way.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip

You still have not stated what malware problems you are having!

Okay here are the updated logs. This time MGTools was able to run in normal mode.

Re-ran Spybot for a quick check, Zlob detected. I figure it can't hurt to supply that log too.

I'm going to re-run all scans again. I backed up my parents' documents and blew away their profiles.

All of their search providers in IE 8 were redirecting to findgala and the like. I was able to remove these in my dad's profile but not my mom's - couldn't open any web page at all on her profile. So that's why I decided to start clean.

Maybe it would be a good idea in your 'how to avoid malware' sticky that users of IE 8 (not sure of the settings in IE7) make sure that in the "manage search providers" window, they check the box "prevent programs from suggesting changes to my default search provider."

These are just part of the same keys that SUPERAntiSpyware was attempting to fix. See that log. These last two keys must be locked. If they are all that remains, they are not real problems but we will try to remove them anyway.

Not recommended as stated in our cleaning procedure. You just needed to wait for the next fixes ( below ) to be given after you attached the updated and correct logs from normal bootmode. We need these to continue.

It would not help since malware would just overwrite it.;)

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {EA756889-2338-43DB-8F07-D1CA6FB9C90D} - (no file)
    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: WormRadar.com IESiteBlocker.NavFilter - {3CA2F312-6F6E-4B53-A66E-4E65E497C8C0} - C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgssie.dll (file missing)
    O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Thanks so much for the help.

It's looking good, but I haven't tested absolutely everything yet. No redirects so far.

You're welcome. Your logs are clean but one folder with a single file in it is troublesome. If you don't know what the below are for I suggest you delete the file and folder. The cfg file is hidden:
    Code:
    ---- Directory of c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\MSPABXJONLE
    2010-04-25 01:54 . 2010-06-06 18:27 29719 c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\MSPABXJONLE\MSQYFDPE.cfg

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
