BUM... my iPod touch is the 2st generation one, so only doing the iPhone, not that I use it much these days, but good for a backup phone.

It took a few tries and about an hour but it is finally updated (iPod Touch). And that's on a pretty fast connection so patience and a bit of time will also be needed.

There is an immediate noticeable difference but it appears that the majority of the new features are iPhone only. Still exploring though.

Some good feature descriptions at Lifehacker. There are more iPod features then I first thought. :)

Seems I hit the PITA updates on the 3G iPhone many others have with, while it will update and you get many of the new features and icons, once the update has finished and recovered your backup as in contacts etc it reverts to looking like the previous iOS 3 and just does not wish to connect to iTunes, had to re-authorise it on a different PC to get it to work after the restart.

While it will be different for many, good and bad like all early adopter software, I would advise many to not upgrade for a few weeks and if your have an iPhoen 3G... dont upgrade at all as their is nothing new for you in reality (see the link posted from Evil F above), Apple do have a habbit of releasing poor new versions.

@EF, yeah good feature at Lifehacker.

My daughters iPod errored out at the very end of it's update. The new OS was installed but the background/wallpaper didn't take effect. I'm not sure about all of the other features. It's hard to get it away from her long enough to work on it lol. I'm thinking I am going to have to reset it and try again.

I should be getting my first iPhone in October. Finally decided to change cell phone providers after many, many years. Hopefully by then most of the bugs in the new iPhone are worked out.

    *Off topic!

Why are my links not showing up for me in this forum?

Edit: I can't even see my attachment? Firefox.

I had the issue with adblock. Few others have mentioned it in some threads. I disabled adblock in Firefox and works/see links now.

Neat what one you going for the iPhone 3GS or the new 4G? the 4G looks very nice, but not alot of networks on 4G yet though to take advantage of that mobile connection.

yeah may reset mine again as the new look icons and background was evident when first updated, just on restore of contacts etc it reverted back to the previous looking screens and icons etc, however in the options and about, the version 4 software is listed... weird, but I'm not the only one to see this happen.

I hope to get the new 4G. But still not sure. I want a mobile hot-spot and from what I've read so far (which isn't alot) the iPhone does not do that.

Really glad I did not wait a few months ago in changing my phone to a WinMo HTC over waiting for the iPhone 4G

No not as far as I know either, the tethering is also chargable in the UK if you wish to use HSDPA tethering for your laptop/netbook. However and this si why I went with a HTC HD2 WinMO phone is that with my data package tethering is included, sadly while my phone can be a hotspot, the ROM thats in the phone from the service provider is not geared up for that, but if you buy a SIM free version and your provider has not disabled that function you could do with a HTC HD2, dunno about the otehr HTCs but likely you can.

I am still happy with my iPhone 3G. My carrier (T-Mobile) enabled tethering by default, so there is no need for me to get another phone just for tethering ;)

I will probably buy a new iPhone next year or maybe get an Android phone.

Seems T-Mobile in your country has tethering enabled by default Philipp, in UK its not enabled for free, you have to pay extra as far as I know, but dont know all networks pricing structures, but O2 is extra on iPhone (not on Windows Mobile).

The new iPhone seems a dog so far, with the signal strength etc, the Apple store had many folk complaining today of this, my iphone 3G had a restore done of the iOS4 and that decided to wipe the call credit off!!! had to again restore the phone after chatting with Apple support and getting the call credit restored after chatting to O2 support, wasting 2hrs of my time today.....

so would not update to the iOS4 yet, until the next software upate version as its buggy as hell, two of my friends are having weird issues, liek duplicate videos and songs as well as apps none responsive (the apps maybe that they are not iOS4 compatible yet).

I'd go with an Android phoen Philipp if I was you :)

I think this is one time for me when being forced to wait is a good thing. ;)

I should be able to make a more educated decision by the time October get's here.

A friend of mine updated his iPhone 3G as well and now all his apps are gone :-o. I guess I should wait until 4.1.

Yes, maybe that's the best. There are actually quite good Android phones on the market like the Samsung I9000 Galaxy S:
    http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i9000_galaxy_s-review-478p2.php

However, one thing I dislike on the Android platform is that you may not able to upgrade on the latest version. There are still phones out there that can only run Android 1.6 but not the latest 2.2 release.

    Hi Philipp

Two friends of mine have had the same, it appears in some cases its due to the app not being iOS4 compatible. Mine seems ok now after spending time with Apple on the phone, but what I didnt do is to restore the phones contacts and apps etc again, decided to start from scratch, so far works ok, few apps dont as they not compatible.

SO yes I would wait for the 4.1 update.

I'm impressed with HTC phones, I have a HD2 with WinMo but the Desire and Magic look good.

LMAO today as I read this from Nokia, a really subtle dig at Apple http://conversations.nokia.com/2010/06/28/how-do-you-hold-your-nokia

I see Apple have finally owned up to a design flaw in the iPhone 4, but blaming the software more, sorry but dont see that, this is more a hardware fault than a software one in my eyes

I wonder if, since a strip of scotch tape will "fix" the reception issue, that if you use a protective case the reception is not interfered with?

That's the only thing I can think of that would have gotten the new phone through all of the testing without this critical flaw being discovered. But I highly doubt everyone used a case...

I know the workaround of the case is a poor option for a bit of bad design (just wonder if the issue is a grounding/earthing one, as fingers/hand would ground you, whereas a plastic case would shield), I too cannot believe that the original design phones passed QA with this not happening, could this be a case of Apple wanting to release a phone ASAP to keep momentum going in sales just after the iPad launch?

I know Apple like other makers have issues with the 1st build of a product, the iPhone 3 was no exception either, but it was more software than hardware in its case, mine suffered from the power draining quickly until the 1st update to firmware. BUT in the case of the iphone 4 this seems as if hardware is to blame, plus the iOS4 is buggy as hell.

LMAO and I have an iPhone and love its symplicity of use for all, but this is laughable and glad I didnt upgrade to an iPhone 4

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-10665424

Sorry but NO its a major f/up for Apple in that the iPhone 4 is for a rare occasion a bad bit of design from Apple, they likely tried to rushg this out without testing! I certainly wouldnt want a retro fix of a case to fix my iPhone 4 as the iPhones are more a design statement and hiding it behind a case defeats the object of the phone!

My HTC HD2 is metal and doesnt suffer from this issue of signal loss.....
