    Win7, HP Pavillion laptop...
I get a consistent error screen saying WD is turned off. Tho I click the 'turn it on link', nothing happens.

    Any ideas would be welcome
    Thanks.

Your resident antivirus may keep it disabled. ed

My only firewall is MS Security essentials. Would that do it? I see no place for fine tuning it.
    Thanks.

MSE is meant as a replacement for Windows Defender and disables it upon installation. By the way, MSE is not a firewall; it's real-time anti-virus and anti-spyware protection.

I see. So Windows Defender should provide a firewall? Any idea how I can get to load, or how I track it down??
    Thanks

Win 7 has its own built-in firewall, switched on by default. You can check its status in Control Panel > Windows Firewall.

Do not run two firewalls at the same time. If you want to try a different one you must ensure the Windows one is switched off.

Windows Defender is in Windows 7? Hmm, I can't find it on my Win 7 system. Where is it?

I don't know. An error screen appears at bootup, asking me to activate it. I'd like to find out how, or, dispose of the error screen.

Type it in the Start > Search box. It's there alright -

I'll try that. I already get the screen, but clicking the link does nothing.

As said in #4 MSE disables it. That's why the link doesn't work, but I'm mystified as to why you are getting a warning about it.

OK, I can open it that way. Thanks. Seems odd, though, that it's available somewhere in Control Panel, as it is in Vista.

I see I left a critical 3-letter word out of my post. See correction above in bold.

There's something odd about your Win 7 usaf -

How do you navigate to that screen?

If you switch from Category view to Small Icon view that should give the same as mine I would think.

Changing from Category view to Small Icon view did the trick. Thanks, Earthling.
