With the recent rulings about ripping DVD's I own I am looking into movie download sites. Netflix, Cinemanow, etc. are some I have checked out. None seem to actually want to sell me a movie I can keep.

    One site has:
"If you do not agree to the Terms, do not use the Service. We can change the Terms at any time without any notice to you, and by continuing to use the Service, you agree to be bound by all such modifications or revisions. It is your responsibility to review these Terms from time to time for any changes as they create binding legal agreement between you and Best Buy."

So I have to check that our agreement has not changed? How often?

Are there any movie sites that sell movies I can keep and do not threaten to make me a criminal unless I spend more time reading agreements than watching movies?

    Hi

Not as far as I know, most of the ones like you I have checked out are using the rental type model for allowing users to view video, basically you can stream it, can in some cases save the file to a HDD player, but you wouldnt be able to transfer to DVD or a portable player.

I did read the ruling, which iirc was a few months back in California and more taken out in relation to RealMedia, and their ripping app, I was and willing to be educated more as I'm not fully upto speed on ripping DVDs and the legalities. Likely also a country by country thing also.

Likely yes as they could change the agreements weekly, most wouldnt in reality due to the upset and loss of good will to the customer, and customer power is great in that it can easily in the digital age cripple a service via bad word of mouth.

Hopefully someone has a service you can use thats well within the legal side of this.

Yeah I don't think you'll find one, there's no way they could allow you ownership of the data which is what it would take as converting or transferring to another device is prohibited with all copyright entertainment data, similar to Itunes you would be able to put the movie on a computer or device and there it must stay until the computer/device dies or your lease expires:-D

    Silly,nonsensical,adrift from common sense,yup.

Um, Rikky... apologies if I'm derailing the thread, but what on earth did you do to be forced to move there?

    A big dump :-D

I only went in the crawl space to install a pinhole camera to spy on Timw but he caught me and forced me to clean out his septic line.

You know, you really should have expected that. When it comes to stalking, he's still the unrivaled master. :p

Thanks for the "help", at least you confirmed what I found.
I will explore U-Verse's rules about keeping HD TV, I know you can record for "later viewing". So hopefully I can have 2 or 3 Tb for "future viewing".

The few I've seen have an expiration date when the proprietary software/player automatically deletes the files eg. 'BBC iplayer HD=30 days IIR' ,most of the channel players over here use this system, its incredibly easy to bypass though but then your stuck in the same boat with illegitimate video.

    Good luck anyhoo;)
