Dell Laptop won't boot

Dell inspiron 1501-Windows XP

Laptop will not boot, on the boot screen there are several options

Safe Mode
Safe mode with command prompt
Last known configuration
Start windows normally

Will not start in safe mode

I was able to run the diagnostics and got the following errors:
0F00-075D IDE device failed
0F00-0244 Uncorrectable data error of media write protected
0F00-1A44 Uncorrectable data error of media write protected

I was able to boot from CD, I typed 'R' for repair, right now it is just sitting with a command prompt, I am not sure it is doing anything.

 

Sounds like a HD issue, possibly dead. Can you remove it and attach it to another computer to test? Easy to do with a IDE/SATA to USB cable.

 

Nothing is easy for me, I am not real computer savvy LOL
The only other computer I have access to is a Dell PC, I am not sure what a IDE/SATA to USB cable is, so I am pretty sure I don't have one.

Should be able to find one at any computer shop.

And the HD is behind usually a square panel on the bottom of the laptop, hel in place by a few screwws.

The connection will be self-evident, then plug the usb end into the other computer. Open windows explorer and see if it is recognized under My Computer. If the HD is gone, it won't see it.

But before you do that, tap the F2 key on startup, this will bring you to the BIOS. And one of the screens there will show you your HD, if it can see it, and can it?

 

Many thanks but it looks like I got it working. I ran CHKDSK and now it booted up.
