    Message 1 of 2 - logs attached--

Approximately 1-2 weeks ago my family began to notice that every time we clicked a link on a search engine, we were rerouted to ads. We have 3 PC's in our home, all connected by a wireless router that is installed into our wall. All three of us have the same problem so we don't know how to fix it. I have scanned my system with TrendMicro's Housecall, SuperAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, Spybot Search and Destroy but everything comes up clean. Two PC's are using Vista and one is using XP. It doesn't seem to matter what browser we use or what search engine. I have followed all instructions in the READ ONLY file and am attaching the first logs and will send the rest in the next message. Thanks in advance!

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

You need to first put ComboFix.exe on your Desktop as was specified. You put it the below folder which will not allow you to follow our instructions.
    c:\users\Laura\Downloads\ComboFix.exe

Why are you running this PC with no antivirus protection?

You have a DNS hijacker which will also infected router hardware. If you have a router hooked up then you need to follow the instructions for your hardware and reset it to factory default settings. Normally there is a recessed push button type switch that needs to be held down for some number of seconds to do this. After resetting to factory defaults on your router, you will need to reconfigure the router for your network if you have made any changes to the default network setup.

    Now immediately do the below.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

chaslang, I moved the ComboFix to my desktop and followed your instructions...during the first scan the program stalled due to trying to reboot and my windows was password protected. It deleted a file, but I'm unable to open the logs to see what it was. I repeated the process and the second time I got a blue screen and the PC shut down. I tried once more and it finished. When I saved the log I was then unable to do anything on the computer, cannot connect to internet, cannot open anything at all without receiving the message, "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". I am now on my husband's PC because I can't get into control panel or system restore, everything is disabled. I'm afraid to try to reboot for fear that nothing will open. Please advise.

I was able to retrieve the log from my system by copying it to a stick drive. I have attached so you can see what happened.

If still having this error message after a power down then try the below with sfc.

Click Start, Run, and enter sfc /scannow and click OK. There is a space after the sfc. This runs System File Checker which looks for missing or corrupted system files and attempts to replace/repair them from files on your hard disk or from the CD if necessary. So it will ask for the Windows CD if it needs it.

If necessary, run sfc in safe boot mode.

You forgot to attach the new MGlogs.zip file I needed to see; however before doing this, if you still have a problem connecting to the internet then do the below.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Now reboot. After reboot see if you can connect to the internet and also do the below no matter what. I need this log.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

My son used the windows installation disk to restore the computer to a restore point last month and now everything is okay. Everyone is up and running with no problems. I wish I had known it was that simple.

Sometimes it is and sometimes it is not. ;) Sometimes you cannot get System Restore to run and sometimes going back to a restore point only masks the obvious symptoms of the malware but does not fully remove it.

The last steps I posted would have fixed things up.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
