problems with MGtools

    Hi there,

    I've been having some problems with malware, and decided I should follow your system for finding and solving these problems. I've used the "Windows XP Cleaning Procedure" exactly as indicated, but have had some problems getting MGtools to run. I click on the MGtools.exe file, and it creates the MGtools folder, but nothing happens after that. I've disabled all the firewall and virusscan software I'm aware of, and still nothing happens.

    I'm attaching all the logs I've obtained thus far from the other programs. I'm hopeful you can help me figure out what to do next. Thanks!

    Please click Start, Run, and enter cmd and click OK. This will open a command prompt window. Enter the below commands at the command prompt each followed by the enter key. The bold black are commands. The purple is merely informational.

    cd \MGtools <-- this changes to the MGtools folder and the prompt should change to C:\MGtools>
    GetRunKey <-- this will try to run all one scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.
    ShowNew <-- this will try to run all another scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.


    What actual malware problems are you currently having? There is nothing of significance in the logs you have attached.

    That worked--thank you. All the programs in MGtools were able to run, and so I've attached the MGLogs zip file.

    Basically, what's been happening is that whenever my computer boots up, it freezes as soon as I try to start a program. I don't even usually get an hourglass or anything; the cursor just freezes on the screen. It makes it impossible to do anything, essentially, which is why I had assumed that malware might be part of the problem.

    You need to add 4 times the amount of RAM that you have installed. 512 MB is just not enough to properly run current versions of Win XP especially if you are also going to use McAfee on top of it.

    You ran MGtools in safe mode. A log from normal boot mode would have been much more useful but you are not having malware problems. I will give you something to do below to remove some unnecessary startup items to help free up resources but this is not malware.


    Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

    Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

    Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    Also reconsider whether you really need to run the below at startup or whether you can just run them yourself as needed
    O4 - Global Startup: Billminder.lnk = C:\QUICKENW\BILLMIND.EXE
    O4 - Global Startup: Quicken Startup.lnk = C:\QUICKENW\QWDLLS.EXE

    Now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    I've taken these steps, and they do seem to have helped somewhat. My system seems to be running okay now, although it's very slow.

    Perhaps it's time to invest in a new computer...

    Would it help much if I were to ditch McAfee and go with a different AV program?

    That's up to you but it will probably run okay with more memory.

    There are many less resource hungry programs but if you don't add more memory, your PC will still be slow.

    You missed fixing the below line which is another waste of system reources:
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DellSupportCenter] "C:\Program Files\Dell Support Center\bin\sprtcmd.exe" /P DellSupportCenter

    I also suggest that you stop a related service from running by doing the below.

    Open a command prompt window by clicking Start, Run, and enter cmd and click OK. If the window opens type each of the below commands in. Follow each by the enter key. Note there are spaces after the sc and after the stop and after the delete.

    sc stop dellsupportcenter
    sc delete dellsupportcenter


    Since you are not having malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
      related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
