lost sound after installing coolmaster V8

I could use some thoughts on this problem please.
I installed a Cool-master V8 cooler on the CPU and now after restarting i have lost sound.
The small speaker in the tool bar has a red X on it and if i hover over it it tells me "no audio Output device is installed" and as i have not changed anything else it is difficult to understand?

If i start the Audio troubleshooter it say it can not repair the problem.

    Any ideas please.

Check the wiring, maybe you pulled an audio cable out by accident? There should absolutely be no interference between the two things.

Congrats on the new cooling! http://bestsmileys.com/drinking/1.gif

Doesn't that mean it is set to mute?

It is not muted, when i hover over the red X it tells me there is no audio device installed even though i have an X-FI card installed.

I pulled the X-FI and re-seated it but no change.

I think I would uninstall all the drivers, remove the card, and reboot. If the motherboard has integrated sound, I would enable that and install its drivers and make sure all works.

Then start over installing the card. If PCI card, I would put it in a different slot too.

I don't think it has any on board sound but maybe you can understand the adio specs.

It can't hurt to try without the X-FI.

    Hi Bill

In Device Manager do you have any Yellow ! marks?
Check the Windows Audio Service is Started and set to Automatic.

I would re-install the Audio driver again and see if that rectifies this issue, while installing a CPU cooler it should not have impacted the audio, but stranger things have happened in the past so nothing suprises me these days.

Edit: noted Digerati has posted already some of my comments, but left post as to check services.

The only yellow triangles i have are not on the audio but on the IDE controller and when i search for drivers it says it can not find any but as i don't use IDE it does not matter.

I have done just about all there is to do and still no sound so i can only assume i need a new sound card.

I really doubt you need a new soundcard Bill, I'm sorry for saying this but you must have missed something. Turn on/off the X58's onboard sound in BIOS and reinstall the soundcard drivers. I can't believe that you can destroy hardware like that!:(

Well now i am really embarrassed :-o

On my motherboard are two PC-E slots, one black and one white, guess who connected the sound card to the wrong one.

LOL, no reason at all to be embarassed as my board has a pair too and doesn't say anything of what to put where. Glad you got it fixed.

Did it ever work? I ask because there seems to be a lot of real estate between the PCIe slot and the CPU socket so it does not seem like it would be necessary to pull the card to replace the HSF assembly.

In order to fix the coolmaster to the CPU it is held fast with nuts on the rear of the mobo and with my case i have no access to the rear of the mobo so i had to pull it out and when i put everything back i put the sound card in the wrong place.

It is one big mother of a unit.

Ah, I see. Yeah, that is big. Now get in there and clean that dust off that nice Antec PSU! ;)

I was just looking at it before at Newegg and now that I see it installed, that thing is humongous! Now I see why you took a couple of days off. So Bill, when are you going to start OC'ing that sucker, IIRC it's an i7 950, right? You should easily get to 4.2 GHz IMO.;)

Just to see how good the cooler is i pushed the voltage on my CPU from 2.67 up to 3.67 for about 3 hours and it remained stable with the temp holding in the green at 86c.

I really need to do some homework first as i have never ventured into the mysterious world of overclocking.

By the way you did not spot the change of GPU.

I managed to get to my supplier on Friday to get the cooler and i asked him if he had a VGA dummy plug but he didn't, then i spotted this GTX480 just lying there looking all forlorn and lost so i gave it a new home.

Aaaaccckkk Bill, please don't go pushing voltages just for the heck of it! :eek You could easily have burnt something out!:cry I'm glad you're still OK though, only push voltages when needed to OC your machine, right?;) So bring that voltage back down please.:)

Use AiSuite from ASUS, you can start OC'ing by %10 just by pushing the QPI up %10 and without touching any voltages, It's worked flawlessly on every ASUS board I've ever had.

Oh 86C is kinda hot, I don't like mine above 70C. You use just the pre-applied paste?

:eek That's too hot! Did you mean 86°C?

It's OK Augie, that voltage is a pre set built into the mobo, it has a lot of pre-sets for the enthusiast, I only left it for about 3hours and everything is stock now.

Ya, I've got preset voltages too and they go way up but mine are colour coded so if I'm getting into a dangerous area, I'll know. So what's your temps @idle and full load like?

Oh, I missed the new GPU as I got stuck on the OC thingy.;) I did notice those 'horns' coming out the side though wondering what those were.

As for the dummy plug, the gf is off tomorrow and doing the groceries so the plug will be sent then. Sorry for the delay, it's been a hectic couple of weeks for the poor gal.:)

I get paranoid when CPU temps climb past 60°C. While some can take a little more, stability often ensues. But, the CPU is not the only concern when CPU temps get too high. Excessive heat can result in damage to the socket. And also, something all too often forgotten, or left totally unawares by newbie alternative cooling implementers, is that the CPU fan provides cooling for more than just the CPU. Mobo designers cluster the voltage regulator circuits around the CPU socket so they too can take advantage of the air movement created by the CPU's [stock] HSF assembly.

I guess now's a good a time as any to remind folks that using ANY other cooler on "retail" versions of CPUs - that is CPUs that come in a box with an AMD or Intel supplied cooler - voids the CPU warranty! And while motherboard makers provide overclocking capabilities, damage from overclocking is not covered either - not by the motherboard maker, or by the CPU maker.

The voltage pre set was marked "crazy" but then that's me.

@ idle the temp is 32C and under full load it is 44C after 15 min

    :)

Those are great. Do note, CPU temps can jump exceedingly high in just a few seconds. How are you loading it?

I am running 4 X VM notfred folding and the CPU is pegged at 100%

LOL Bill.:-D Those are perfect temps with lots of headroom if you ever do want to get into the OC world.;)

I will do some studying and see where i go from here with the OCing.

The VM notfred is running but does not seem to be producing points at the moment.

I would just start the Win SMP2 with -smp 8 and -advmethods, you should get at least 10K PPD from the CPU with that.
