All are free, available for download here, and are superior in combination to either option you listed.

With Norton, yes. Like baklogic said it is a resource hog and little better than a software placebo.

I've not had personal experience with the MS Security Essentials, and to give a tip of the hat to Microsoft, they have gotten much better with security over the years. I'd still be afraid to trust them completely with my computer's health, but if your only choice was to be between them and Norton, I'd go with the Microsoft suite.

Your best bet in the long run is going to be to read through chaslang's post I linked and make your own informed decision.
