Fried CPU / MOBO

OCZ GameXstream 700W Power Supply (tested with another PSU still the same)
    4GB Crucial Memory
    Intel Duo Core 2 E8400
ASUS P5Q-E BIOS Version: 2101 (latest)

A while back my CPU cooler broke and so i couldn't resist testing my new ATI 4870, i was playing games n such and then after 4 days decided to leave it off untill get a new CPU cooler. When i came back to the Motherboard and installed the new CPU Cooler all of the heatsink was sizzling and couldn't be left on because the temperature was just far too extreme like 1 second and your finger is feeling a scorch effect like under hot water.

Now i'm not using a CPU cooler untill i can find what is causing this overheat is it the CPU or is it the Motherboard ? When boot up you got like 30/40 seconds to use the computer mostly the BIOS settings lol and then auto-shutdown at 115C, no errors during post everything is normal except 'CPU TEMPERATURE OVERLOAD'

basically just looking for an EXP-ert opinion as to people who too used their computers without CPU cooler and had these problems^

    Thanks

How did the cooler break??? And what got hot to the touch? And now you are not using a heat sink at all???? ed

If no cooler, do NOT boot that machine.
Try installing a fresh layer of thermal paste after cleaning the CPU (if not already dead) and install a good, unbroken cooler and fan.

I'm well aware of using a CPU cooler, please read what has been typed rather than stepping in for brownies (spamming).

I DID just that when I first got started. Didn't know anything.
Destroyed my machine by overheating the CPU and fried the motherboard.
House smelled like burned wires for several days.
So, yeah, I do have EXP-erience in what you are asking.

I would get a new cpu cooler that works. Put a new layer of thermal paste etc. and then try and boot it up.

Do not boot a system with a broken cpu cooler. Very easy way to kill your CPU.

If you lucky the CPU may be ok. However I have a bad feeling the cpu is damaged now from running it with a bad cooler. However if the system posting it may be ok.

I had a cooler fail on my HP machine and the cpu go to a 115C but the cpu survived somehow.

    Good luck

Here are the statements you made in your post, no expert can tell what you have done, Please dont bash free help when somebody asks you a question, thats the only way you can get help is by explaining how it happened. ed

Run for 4 days with no CPU cooling?
With a new high powered graphics card, sure to increase the load on the processing power?
I would figure the thing is ready for a hole in the ground.

Did this happen on your P5Q-E ? whether yes or no can you do a little test for me by touching your heatsinks around the middle of the board and reply back if it's warm/hot in a count of 60seconds, then i can know for sure that it's the Motherboard that's gone.

Maybe either way one of them has to get an RMA and it is odd that CPU and everything posts OK.

Also when using only the 24-pin connection no overheat occurs it's just nice and warm / normal.

As has been said if you boot a PC without the CPU heatsink it is the fastest way to kill the CPU and maybe other peripherals.

The CPU can take temps above 100C but only for a very short period.

If the Mobo was dead the chances of booting at all are very remote so most likely you have killed the CPU.

Yeah the CPU was replaced and is now working on my Motherboard, thanks most.
