    Hello everyone,
I have never used a forum before and I am certainly not a computer buff, but this problem is making me very fed up! and I am hoping that you clever folk may be able to help me.

Every time I right click on a file and choose the Send To command or even just run the mouse pointer over without clicking "nothing happens" and that screen freezes, I have to navigate away from that page to get the computer to work again. I tend to use the send to command for moving picture files from an SD card onto the computer. I also have problems with the My Computer command it takes a very long time to load approx 5 minutes is all I get is the searchlight, could these problems be linked in some way?

I have a mesh desktop computer with an AMD Athlon proccesor 1.68ghz and 1.5gb ram
I am running windows XP service pack 3
I also have AVG antivirus ver 9 running and have recently downloaded CCleaner to clear out junk.

    Regards,
    Rob

    Hi Plodr
Did as you suggested and downloaded Shellexview and disabled shell extensions one by one re booting each time but the problem remains the same, is it possible to create a shortcut for the send to command and put it on the desktop. or is there any other way to quickly transfer files from an SD card to a folder on the hard disk?

    Thanks for your help.

I don't know how quick but I usually open two instances of windows explorer side by side. I then right click and drag the files from the sd card to a location on C: of my choosing. I release the right mouse button and select copy rather than move. If there is any sort of glitch while the files are being transferred, choosing move will result in files being lost. If copy is chosen instead and there is a glitch, I can simply start from square one again because no files were lost.

    >>Excuse me, Plodr, but I was looking over this forum as usual for tips and noticed you open 2 instances of windows explorer then maeuver the way you want.
Do you do this by right clicking 'start' opening Windows then, tile windows verticaaly, then again open the second explorer?
When both windows are visible, can you copy and paste from one side to the other?
If a flash drive is involved is it basically the same concaept that delivers information from the flash to the C:?
    Thank you

You can transfer anything in windows by bringing up to windows, left click one to highlight, left click again and hold down left click and drag it to the other window, if you cut and paste it will remove it from the other folder and put it where you paste, hope this answered your question. ed

I understand about cutting and pasting and copying/pasting; what about the two windows? What is the easiest way to create them, 'tile vertically'?

I usually just open a new folder(right click on desktop, choose new- folder
Rename folder to what I want it for- then click the restore down square, this reduces to around half size- then open memory stick/cd/dvd and just click on the dvd/cd/memory stick item and hold down mouse- drag across to new folder and release the mouse button- If I want to copy everything on the stick, or whatever , I just click on the edit button at the top of the window showing the stick etc; and choose edit all, and keeping the mouse over the shadowed area, drag across to the new folder and let go of the button- speed depends on your system.
I forgot, if memory syick/dvd comes up in full just click the squre tot restore down to get to same size.
You can just chold down left click on top bar of each window and slide across/down to suit- or, use the left click on the corners (double ended arrows to mke windows easier to do as you wish.
I find this as simple as any, myself.

The Restore Rown size will depend on the size of the Explorer window the last time it was closed in the Restore Down mode. But, an Explorer window, in the Restore Down mode (meaning not in maximized view) can easily be resized by pointing your mouse at a border of the window and moving that border right, left, up, or down. So, just open two Explorer windows and make them small enough that you can see both on screen at the same time. They could be side by side or one above the other; it's your preference.

No, I right click My Computer and select Explore. I do this twice, then move the mouse cursor to the title of one Explorer window and drag the window where I want. I usually put them aside of each other and use the mouse cursor on the edges until I'm satisfied with the size of each window. I expand the left pane in each until I see the file I want to move and the place where I want to put it.
Yup. I basically right click and drag into the other window where I want the directory or file to go. When I release the right mouse button, I select move or copy.
Flash drive, floppy, external hard drive, CD/DVD...all file or directory movement can be done in the above manner.

I've done it this way since windows 3.11 and all habits die hard. I also used to use a program with a parallel crossover cable that would move files from one computer to another. It used two instances of explorer - one for the source and the other for the target so I got used to doing it this way.

in the original post, we missed the slow bit
"I also have problems with the My Computer command it takes a very long time to load approx 5 minutes is all I get is the searchlight, could these problems be linked in some way?"
Possible- you could run system file checker sfc /scannow , with your xp disc in the cd/dvd rom drive, to check system files- jut keep clicking retry, until it finishes-
    Also
start, run CHKDSK /r, and let windows check on restart.
Cleaning tools can sometimes clean, and upset the system. Always make a restore point before using.

I was trying to move my docs but did not realize you had to put the cursor over the title. I've got it now. This makes my tasks much easier.
May I ask, if you have a picture on the screen, i.e., my old Word issue where the dialogue box refuses to go away, is there some way to "print screen" this to someone so they can see what you see?
I know the bascic print screen but I am asking about how to accomplish this when the print scren procedure is not responding.
    Thank you for the help.

There are two basic methods of capturing all or part of the screen, for posting to a forum or emailing etc.

    1. In Vista and Win 7 you use the Snipping Tool, which you will find on your Start menu. You trace a rectangle around what you want, click, and save as a jpg or whichever format you want. For XP there are free utilities which do the same job, for example MWSnap

    2. Sometimes you also want to include in the screengrab a dialog box, but these always disappear when you try to use any of the above, so for that you have to press PrtScrn, open Paint, and paste. You can then snip the part you want and save it as a separate file for posting or emailing.

    >>When Word was repeatedly fouling up, it displayed a large box with dx and instructions. I tried 'print screen' and pasted into paint as I have learned to do in the past but it would not appear. I have since resolved the issue but I was curious if there was another way or if in this case it was just impossible. I think it was the latter. In other attempts with this same box, the screen appeared to not respond to anything.
My other posts explain how I removed Word ,scanned the information, formatted the flash drives and recreated the data on a freshly installed Word program.

    Thanks Baklogic,
Tried both the sfc /scannow and CHKDSK/r but no good I'm afraid, still having the same problems. I actually timed the delay from clicking the My Computer icon to it displaying the drives and it was just over 4 minutes, also on the Send To Command I do not have to click it for the computer to freeze I only have to pass the mouse pointer over it.
    Any other ideas?

Do you feel an image recovery would be the answer?
I once clicked F8 upon booting and chose 'last known good configuation' and it worked when all else failed.

    Always worth a try
    -------------------------
Have you got nero installed - I have trawled around a bit,

NmBgMonitor.exe--- part of nero 7 seems to be one culprit causing the same problem

    Hi Baklogic
I do have an older version of Nero it is version 5 that came with the computer, I have searched for the files that were mentioned in the articles you supplied but they do not appear on my computer. As I do not use this program would it be a good idea to remove it anyway? and should I do this via Add/Remove programs or use Ccleaner instead to make sure that all files are deleted.

Sorry, I have been otherwise ocupied, and unable to get back to you,and have to go again, as my friend is ill.
As you have an earlier version of nero, it may not apply.
I think the best idea would be to
    Start
    Run
    TYPE IN
    msconfig.
Then choose selective startup, in the relevent area- I am not in XP at the moment- but you wil see a list of start up programs with ticks in them- First of all click so that microsofts own startup items are unlisted, then choose to disable (untick ) startup programs, and reatart .
You will be starting similar basically to safe mode, without any other start up programs.
Now, from memory, I would see if it now runs any better when you right click my computer- Assuming it does, I would then repeat the msconfig, so that you now keep selective startup, but enable one program by ticking it, and restarting.
Repeat this until it shows the program that could be causing the slowdown.
Other than this , if you right click my computer, click manage, then click on events, and look for the yellow asterisk by a faulting event, and douvle click it it will come up with a little box telling you what happened , or, the cause oft the fault- it often gives you the opportunity to click the item and go on line to microsoft, and , if it is a common fault, you may be led to a possible remedy.
Come back, if necessary, for more help, in case someone else has more ideas, other than doing a system restore, as someone previously suggested.
    Good luck.

    Hi Baklogic,
Thanks for your reply, I found that when I went into msconfig selective startup was already selected and that some items in the startup menu were deselected not sure when this happened, anyway I unchecked all of the items in the start menu and rebooted but the problem was still there. Was I supposed to deselect all in the General tab ? ie. Process System.ini file, Process Win.ini file, Load system services, Load startup items, use original boot.ini. Not sure if you meant this or not so I left it alone.

So I went to your second suggestion and went in to manage my computer and found that under the Event viewer /Application tab that I have a 2 daily warnings for Microsoft fax saying Fax service failed to initialize went to Microsoft website but no further information was available. ( could this be the cause )

Also under the System tab I also have a daily error warning that the DCOM did not register with the server in the required timeout.

P.S. Hope your friend is getting better.

    Regards,

    Rob

I found this reference at microsoft regarding DCOMproblem, I am not too well up on this side of thing
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/873375

I see that Ofice seems to cause some problems with the fax, also, changing your isp , if you have, can affext it- Again, I can't help you much on that particular problem- but , perhaps someone else might .
You could tart another thread, just asking about the fax, and DCOM situation that might attract more help.
    Good luck

    Hi All,
Have just found an anwser to My 2 problems

They were both related to a DCOM error event listed in the Event Viewer.

    Source:DCOM
    EventID:10010
Description: The server {A1F-4E726-8CF1-11D1-BF92-0060081ED811} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.

This relates to the Windows Acquisition Service and even if you disable the service the DCOM references to the WIA continue to cause the problem.

    I found this solution,

    bcastner (IS/IT--Management) 4 Jun 05 12:45
I should note another workaround, which is to remove the DCOM references from the WIA Service.

    Start, Run, Regedit

    Locate:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AppID\{A1F4E726-8CF1-11D1-BF92-0060081ED811}
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{A1F4E726-8CF1-11D1-BF92-0060081ED811}

Either export the keys and remove them, or rename the keys by right clicking, Rename, and add something like a '@' symbol to the beginning of the Name.

    Reboot.

Now set the WIA service to disabled by a Start, Run, services.msc

Thanks to everyone that responded to my problem and helped me find a solution.

    Regards to all,
    Rob

    Well done
Event viewer can often help, and I am glad it helped find the cause, but by coming back with the end solution, you may well help someone else, when they google, or, ask at majorgeeks for the same problem.

I was a bit confused about this thread.
I had mentioned a problem with Word and at the end of the thread I notice there is a congratulations upon resolution of a problem.
Was that my Word issue or robhowletts, or are they the same.
The reason I ask is because I could not understand the pc language in the posts -they were above my level.
My issue was resoled by means I explained although quite cumbersome and lengthy.

    Robhowlett's problems.........................

The problem was associated with DCOM errors, that were found in the event veiwer, and rob found the answer as he deribed in his last post.

I think it likely that you came in with another question, while getting to grips wit this one- I think it was the word problem, that you referred back to your previous posts, and this is the danger of asking for a problem that might be related to yours on someone else's thread.rolleyes

    Hello
    I understand now.
Sometimes it is a close call as to if issues are so intertwined(or a portion of them) that it is appropriate to include them in the thread.
I think in this case, a new post, by me, would have been a better call.
My apologies and I am happy your issue is resolved.:wave

No need to apologise, I was just trying to help stop the confusion.
I have a feeling that plodr was involved with other problems that you were asking about, by the way you posted, perhaps picking up on that thread may bring plodr back to give more help, if you still need it.
One thing to note, is the event veiwer- it might also show some indication of your problem- worth a look.
Right click My Computer, click manage, click on event veiwer, and look for the warning signs, and either follow through to microsoft help, or, come back, and make a new post.
    Good luck
