    Hi all,

I am writing a sci-fi / horror script and am looking for someone who knows malware inside-out to bounce some ideas off. The script is at the development stage - some strong scenes mapped out and a step outline, however I need to reality check the basic premise before the sci-fi begins - i.e. I need to start off in the real world before I start screwing with it. :-D Its probably only a few quick questions - like "Is XYZ possible?" But I want to keep it all confidential... so would appreciate PM/ email, or i could phone you.

Should the film ever get made - i would of course give you a credit.

    Anyone interested?

    Many thanks in anticipation,
    JP

You know you're a geek when
    • You see "scriptwriting collaboration" and you assume an antivirus program
    • You make references to one thread inside another.

forgive my ignorance but what does a sci-fi/horror movie have to do with malware? other than the fact that malware is a nightmare :-D

Well I don't want to give too much away, but simply put the malware in the screen play I'm writing has horrific effects.

There's only two ways these kind of things can go in movies, they either stick to a factual structure in which the only thing malware can do is mess with your computer or all electronic equipment or the malware supernaturally leaves the computer and starts to kill people.

Can you say which way it will go?Both have been done a few times before though for research you may want to look up shocker, maximum over drive, eagle eye and obviously The matrix.

I've yet to see one realistic sci-fi/horror movie, so go ahead.. let the virus jump out of the computer screen and eat people :-D

Thanks for the suggestions Rikky - not seen Maximum Overdrive - will check it. There's loads more of course e.g. Pulse, Hackers. But my story probably has more in common with Rubber's Lover, Akira or Tetsuo crossed with... well I don't want to give too much away ;)

To answer your question - I want to root the story in the contemporary real world before it becomes sci-fi. I will never go supernatural - it will always remain in the realms (albeit at the edges) of possibility. So I will be exploring issues around brain wave entrainment, direct mental input, A.I., evolutionary algorithms, subliminal suggestion etc etc. There are other options to the two you mention...

If you keep it realistic then that's what I'd go for there's too many stupid horror movies,it'll take some imagination to come up with ways a computer can effect the outside world.

I see what you mean, check out existenz if you haven't seen it that has direct brain connection, maximum overdrive is just a crappy machines killing humans really so may not be much help.

Oh you mean like the PC version of "The Ring" .... but this time when you see the BSOD you have 7 days to fix it or you will DIE!

Or you could have a guy creating Malware in order to get into peoples houses to fix said malware and then he/she kills them.... by strangling them with a mouse cord...... it could be called .... The Technician......dun dun daaaaaaa... :-D

    Hehe

Tech - What did I tell you last time I fixed your computer for free?

Victim - Not to remove the security software

Tech - And what did you do?

Victim - Removed your anti virus and put Norton on :cry But I bought Norton three years ago so it must be better than the free one your gave me

Tech - And what about the firewall?

Victim - It was slowing down my torrents :cry

Tech - Your like peer networks ehh? Your about to go and see your peeers!

Ahhhhhh!Die! You better hope heaven has inbound connections!

I think I've answered some of my questions by searching around, but its a huge learning curve and I'm still unclear about a few things. Please excuse my extreme ignorance:

Can malware only be caught by opening an executable file?
Could an executable file be disguised as a .jpg?
Could an ordinary (undisguised) image file contain a virus - if so what kinds of image files?
    What about video files?
Could a hacker or piece of code follow/track an image file into someone's computer and insert malicious code that way?
To what extent can a virus take over someone's computer - I've heard plenty about net bots, key stoke loggers and data deletion, but is it possible to do just about anything as if you were the administrator or someone running Remote Desktop with full permissions? For example play music or other media, adjust the volume or resolution/ refresh rate, or alter media already running?

    Many thanks...

    Hi

Malware can come in all sorts of guises, and jpegs, xls, exe files are just some that can hold malware.
Yes code on a PC could very well open up a route to download more malware to an infected PC and also cause it to be used as a Zombie or BotNet, thus spreading malware to a wider audience.

Various malware can do all of that, remote access to a PC and its files and usage is not unheard of and does happen alot, so if an infected PC does have specific malware it can be used to control that PC remotely and as you mention it could access files, play music etc

What about the other way round? What if the malicious code was already on the computer and running in the background just waiting for the picture to be received.

All computer states can be detected by a piece of software and software can be used perform any function,a piece of software can be made to run at the hit of a key, when a file is opened, when a picture is downloaded pretty much anything.

For that to happen though the code has to be running in the background on the said computer as Halo said you can set the computer up to do anything you want to.

The reason only .exe are used to open virus's and trojans is because virus's are tiny usually only a few hundred Kilobytes and are spread through emails ect.The Malware just opens the door to the computer once its open the hacker can implement anything he wants you can then with larger code set the computer to detect and change its state via any input or change of state.

So you have writing license for the computer to do anything you want, its still within the realm of possibility, you may want to look up backdoors as well, backdoors are used a lot in movies though they kinda bug me you know the rough software designer puts a built in backdoor to a government computer system or security system or software so he can easily disable it.

The distribution method for the code can be anything you can think of it doesn't have to be a virus,it could be game although games have been done a quite a few times I think its a little corny.

I have a a few idea's I want to PM you once your allowed.
