California Considers Electronic License Plate Ads

Advertisements would display only after vehicles were stopped for four seconds and could also be used to display public safety information such as Amber alerts.

Facing billions of dollars in red ink, California may consider showing ads through electronic license plates as a way to generate badly needed revenue.

The idea is contained in a bill that passed out the state Senate on May 28 and is now before the Legislature. The proposal by Democratic state Sen. Curren D. Price Jr. of Los Angeles would give the California Department of Motor Vehicles the authority to investigate the emerging "digital electronic license plate" technology.
The bill authorizes the DMV to partner with technology companies for the purpose of "researching, developing and implementing new technology." Any trials would have to be done at no cost to the state.

Following "real world" trials of DELP technology, the DMV would report back to the Legislature on potential cost saving and revenue generation.

Price said the bill, which would have to be passed by the Legislature and signed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in order to become law, was an attempt to think outside the box to help reduce the state's $19 billion budget deficit.

"State governments are facing unprecedented budget shortfalls, and are actively rethinking the use of existing state assets to create new ongoing revenue opportunities," Price said in a statement.

To avoid being a distraction to motorists, the plates would only start showing ads after a vehicle was stopped for four seconds, such as at a red light or traffic jam, according to media reports. The vehicle's license plate number would always be in view.

Besides advertising, the plates could also be used to provide traffic and public safety information, such as Amber alerts. The latter are urgent bulletins of reported child abductions that are broadcast in partnership with law-enforcement agencies, the media and transportation agencies.

Smart Plate Technologies is one company developing electronic license plates. The San Francisco company is not yet selling the technology.

I don't get it. So, they would put advertising on all license plates? So, if I lived there, I'd have ads on my car? If that's the case, that's BS and I would have a hard time believing they'd have a leg to stand on when people fight it.

    What happened to Australia.

I grew up seeing it as the wild west, a land of rough and tumble, fiercely independent and stubborn people.

From what I've read around here, it sounds like it has become Europeananized, with riduculous and excessive laws, rules, and taxes.

Am I wrong, I hope so.

    I have not seen where it says that it will be mandatory,(doesn't say it isn't either)but what I read in another article;
it doesn't make sense to add another accident waiting to happen. Your eyes are suppose to be on the road all around you not looking down at someones tag to find out who has what sale going on! I understand that they will only be on if the vehicle is stopped for 4 seconds, but let's say the vehicle in front of you has already stopped and you're pulling up to it and try to read the tag/ad. BANG! you have just rear ended that car. Why?? Because you were trying to see what ad they had or if it was better then yours or some reason.

Still looking trying to read when you should be paying attention to what is going on around you. To the Amber alerts they have them on big arse bill boards so you can see them better and at least with the bill boards you can pull over if you really want to read them or get info off them. What are you going to do about getting info off a moving vehicle? Follow it????? I don't think so!!! These are just my P.O. and I'm glad I live here. We have some whacked out laws also but good golly miss Molly! "Think before you ink Arnold."

If you want to talk about ads causing accidents. Irony running into a van and after you wrecked you finally see the ad and its an ad for the local hospital. :-D

Pretty dumb for the USA if they make a person do this. I know places will pay you some money to advertise on your car. Bigger the better. But for the state to do so is fuk up and shows another thing that the world is wanting when other things should be done. Plus better ways to make money for the state.

I believe they only mean the ads will be put on government vehicles such as garbage trucks and police cars ect.

TBH we all have pretty big deficits to pay back I would prefer these ads to some of the stuff they are going to implement over here, its kinda worrying what's about to be cut in the UK and raised to pay off our deficit, poor people are gonna have a really hard time in the next 5 years.

Unfortunately for us we've just voted in a conservative gov so it would seems they are using the deficit to implement policies that they wouldn't have got away with at any other time such as cutting benefits to the poorest people and I've even heard talk of charging people to see their doctor,IN THE UK! The country that made a pledge to look after its citizens 'from the cradle to the grave' that may see fair in the US with private health care but over here it's like pissing on the bill of rights.

Hey, California . . . instead of slapping all working adults in your state with a 10% extra tax; and instead of making sure your state prisons are equipped with aroma-therapy rooms; and instead of worrying about what kind of toy Mcdonalds puts in it's kid's meals; among a thousand other insane California things . . . how about you, I dunno . . .

STOP SPENDING MONEY YOU DON'T HAVE.

That should take care of the massive budget deficit in short order. Say, that's pretty darn good advice for the Federal Government also. It's easy, Uncle Sam - I've done it all my adult life. I can't afford something . . . I don't buy it.

    It's not rocket science . . . rolleyes

Ad space is the next frontier that needs regulating properly, with the advancement in LCD and LED technology changeable ads will soon be the norm, ads on stupid things like T-shirts.

I think there has to be new legislation to protect human rights with regard to when ads should be shown,I personally don't mind changeable ads on things like Buses ect,I get sick of reading the same ads on buses all the time,if we have to be brainwashed at least it will be interesting.

Anyone who's a staunch conservative and believes in the capitalist model shouldn't have any complaint about these ads at all, this is what a free unregulated competitive market brings.:-D Not mentioning any Fredg.:-D

Actually Rikky, would that not be the government using the citizens to get more money... :-D

If you wish to advertise on your car, get it wrapped.

Yeah agreed it doesn't really make any logical sense as all the gov will be doing is taking money from the advertising pot which is fixed,if they start using more ads other forms of advertising will devalue, the products you advertise will sell more and all this does is shift the wealth around it doesn't create any wealth.

The only way to create wealth is increase exports and the GDP and the only way to do that is through private business, capitalism.

I'm often described as a liberal but I'm only liberal in that I don't think your citizens should starve to death when there is so much excess wealth around and I don't think your citizens should die of treatable diseases,it just seems like common sense to me,have a good foundation where your citizens don't die stupidly.

If your citizens want anything beyond just surviving then they have to work for it.

In that respect I'm a big believer in capitalism.
