    Greetings Geeks -

It seems my computer refuses to boot from the DVD drive for a windows reinstall. Here is the scenario:

I removed an old hard drive that contained the OS (Vista). My plan was to replace it with a larger drive and reinstall the OS. When I pulled the old IDE drive and put in the new SATA drive, the computer would not boot from the DVD/CD drive.

I fiddled with all the boot options; boot order, shutting off IDE drives, etc. - no avail. The BIOS recognizes the drive, and it is getting power. I even tried switching SATA connections between the HD and the DVD/CD. I just get the standard prompt to insert boot media and press a key. I know the Vista Disc is good as I tested it on my laptop.

The setup is an ASUS M2V-MX SE motherboard with 2 megs of RAM and an AMD 5600X2. The BIOS is American Megatrends v2.58.

I forgot to add I know the drive works as it was running fine just before I pulled the old HD out. I have have booted from the drive before to install the OS after a recent virus attack. The drive is an LG DVD/CD RW.

    Thanks for any help.

Try clearing cmos and starting over, if there is no boot partition on the hard drive it has to boot from dvd. ed

    Farts! Farts!

Good advice resetting the CMOS, but I did not want to try that on the outside chance it would screw things up if I decided to just put things back they way they were; I did no uninstall Vista from the drive I removed, I was just going put in the new one, install Vista, and ditch the old one.

In the end, that is what I decided to do. Since I was having so many troubles, I just decided to put things back together, and in few months build a new rig and save the new hard drive until then. Well, now I have more troubles. . . .

It seems as I put things back together the boot process went fine, just like it was. Except for one thing - my DVD drive crapped out. Both the BIOS and Vista recognizes the drive, but VISTA does not recognize their is a disc in the drive. The drive shows up as a lettered drive, but it prompts me to insert a disc.

I am really infuriated at Vista. I have always had this problem for some reason. I recently purchased a new DVD drive as my old one just plane out quit recognizing anything at all. The new LG drive I installed worked fine until this morning. There is an outside chance this could be a motherboard problem, but I doubt it. This happened on my laptop too. There is a fix, that sometimes works, but I am not even sure it will work in this instance.

So, I am back with my rig as was - except now I have to troubleshoot my DVD drive. I will check connections, BIOS, Vista settings, etc. I am pretty angry right now.

Thanks for the reply - any advice on the DVD drive?

Thanks for jarring my memory - that is what I did on my laptop that worked adn I could not remember exaclty. You saved me some research. I deleted the upperfilters, but there were no lowerfilters. Still no dice.

I hate to do this, but I just bought the drive a few weeks ago and I might exchange it. I am contemplating just building a whole new computer and install Windows 7. This problem seems to be common. It has happened on my desktop, my wife's laptop, and my laptop.

    Arghhhh...

    Thanks sent your way . . . .

Oh yeah I tried that automated Microsoft Problem Solver or whatever it is which might fix this, and I could not even get that to run. Even more arghhhhh .. . . .
