My girlfriend has managed to download a virus onto her netbook, she runs xp with sp3. It appeared to be a dns hijacker virus then even more appeared including adware bho and various trojans. god bless her!
I have run the entire readme section and done all that my knowledge takes me which is pretty far. The netbook connects to the internet via hardwire no problem but wireless it appears to be connected but it really isn't. I have attached the logs, couldn't download mgtools and the netbook is only letting me run super antispyware in portable application. the virus intially stopped my girlfriend running anything on her netbook in terms of cleaning programmes, she has comodo but think i will be changing her to avast when this is sorted. i can now run most programmes it appears to all be clean now just can't get her connected to the internet wireless. have uninstalled the wireless adaptor and reinstalled but now it says it can't be unistalled, the problems continue.

    help/advice here much appreciated!
    Cheers,
    Greg

Your logs do not show any signs of a DNS infection and they also show that you have internet access as both a ping to google by IP and also by URL worked just fine.

Why did you install WinPcap's drivers to capture packets? Do you use some program ( even a game ) that needs this? I'm referring to the below installed on July 8th.

    R3 WPRO_40_1123;WinPcap Packet Driver (WPRO_40_1123);c:\windows\system32\drivers\WPRO_40_1123.sys [08/07/2010 06:59 34064]

Are you still really having problems? If you are having problems with your browser, which browser ( FireFox or Internet Explorer ). Try both.

I see you installed Spyware Doctor on July 6th. Is this a paid copy or just the trial? If only the trial, you should uninstall it immediately.

The girlfriend installed some items, to fix this herself. The issue is with both ie and FireFox. It will connect via wired, but not wireless.
I ha e uninstalled spyware doctor and a few other items, but the wireless is intermittent.
Can you recommend a firewall and av for a netbook? Something lite.

I suggest that you debug this in the Networking Forum as it does not appear to be a malware issue especially if only on the wireless interface and if intermittant.

See the How to protect yourself link at the end of the below final instructions.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Thank you
    All is well now.
Gone for Microsoft security essentials and Comodo firewall only.
Will see how it goes or may switch back to Avast AV
