Howard Webb has had a good game. Clamped down on the Dutch trying to prolong half the Spanish team's stay in South Africa by putting them in Johannesburg General Hospital. If that was the Dutch game plan, they needed a weaker referee.

Heitinga off. That's it for Holland, I fear.

OMG the spanish are simply diving now, I have no respect left for them, they most certainly do NOT deserve the win, they are outright cheating now.

  3. Nedlamar

    Nedlamar MajorGeek

Bullshit, total bullshit. A goal comes from an ignored foul buy the spanish.

This world cup has been pathetic, total shambles and it finishes the same way.

Nope, sorry, piss poor match, horrendous reffereeing and although the goal was well taken it came from a decision by the ref to play on after the dutch forward had been fouled in the spanish end.

A pathetic end to a pathetic tournament.

I would have been happy for the Spanish but in overtime they just started diving, the dutchman sent off did NOT deserve a yellow card, yet the dutchman held back on a breakaway with a spanish arm around his waste, no call.... the ref decided this match as have most of the matches in this pathetic tournament.
And looky, Torres couldn't walk 2 minutes ago but somehow now is jumping up and down.

    Total crap.

Sorry OMA :( The right team won on the night and the right team won the world cup IMO even if it shouldn't have been won exactly like this,I dunno both teams were as bad or as dirty as each other.

I hope they bring electronic line's men and video replays in for the next one to avoid the farce we've seen this year, something has to be done just too many games decided by the ref.

Oh well that's it for another four years,I thoroughly enjoyed this world cup and I've thoroughly enjoyed chatting about it in this thread so thanks to everyone who joined in you all made it more fun for me :)

Can't say I've enjoyed the WC this time around but the company and chat in this thread has been great so I'd like to echoe your thanks Rikky. :)

You know what? Perhaps in 2014 FIFA will have the tech equipment that's so very, very necessary to avoid referees making wrong decisions.

Games decided by referees is nothing new having seen many world cup games.

In general, Spain played better than the Dutch, it was a tough and dirty fight which don't favor any game.

Thanks to all who contributed to this thread!

Trapped in my hotel room with a bad cold I of course watched the game (while The Guy is downstairs playing poker), and since I don't normally follow soccer/football I'm now curious: Do they not have instant replay in FIFA?

Again, I don't follow it closely enough to know all the rules, but as far as I could tell from the replay, the Dutch guy that was ejected didn't even touch the Spanish player, and if he did, he was most certainly going straight for the ball, not for the player. So are FIFA the last sports organization in the world that doesn't use instant replay to review tough decisions?

Spain earned the win, no doubt about that. I just wish the Dutch had won instead... :(

  11. Nedlamar

    Nedlamar MajorGeek

In a nushell...yes, FIFA is last, Football does not have digital/video linesmen/referee's.
The linesman will make a call and the ref will either agree or make his own call, either way that decision is FINAL. Cannot be and never has been reversed.

The dutch player was sent off for his hand on the Spanish players shoulder, but it looked light and he was not in contact when the spanish player dived/fell. Should not have been called.

  12. Mimsy

I can see why the hand-on-shoulder would be a major no-no in a sport like this, but to not have instant replay along the sidelines is just to invite fan riots and formal complaints... what on earth is stopping them from implementing it? Aside from the fact that no South American team would ever get a free kick again, I mean.

What's hilarious is that they expect the ref to get a lot of calls wrong but usually only discipline a ref if he makes a call that alters the outcome of the game.

    There's far too much referee discretion,calls can easily go either way you have;

    No Foul
    Foul
    Foul and a warning
    Yellow Card
    Red card

Five options for the ref,you can understand if he gets a couple in the wrong 'call zone' eg. Gives a yellow card when it should have been just a warning but at times when there's no contact as a yellow card and when players should have been sent off they are only calling a straight foul without even a warning, let alone a yellow card or a straight red.

Its a long standing problem with football the tackles happen much faster than the ref or the human eye can see so the ref does what all good refs do, GUESS THE CALL! Even better listen to what the players have to say about the tackle and then decide! :-D

    Awsome!Haha

Completely agree with pretty much everything he said, didn't know the Ref was English, and a premier league ref too!, absolutely abismall.
Spain did deserve the win in many ways, they did make their way to the final fairly, I just could help but notice the worst ref offenses were in spains favour and as the article suggests, Spain did use the ref's itchy whistle finger to their advantage, it's a shame it went the way it did, but thats football, been gradually getting worse and worse over the last 20 odd years.

  17. Rikky

Rikky Wile E. Coyote - One of a kind

Well I actually disagree again as an unbiased outside observer I thought the ref held out as long as he could, the first yellows weren't given out flippantly they were an accumulation of bad fouls that led up to them.

As me and dad were watching the game we both would have given more yellow cards to Holland we thought their play was pretty disgusting.

Irrelevant of the bad calls it was an incredibly brutal game on both sides.

I dunno Rikky, most of what I saw was mild pushing and shoving, I only saw 2 offenses that deserved a yellow card, one being your above video.
And while both teams were guilty of diving, the Dutch diving didn't get anyone sent off, the dutchman who was sent off for the hand on the shoulder, I've watched it several times and while he did touch the shoulder, the fall came after and was clearly a dive.
And as I said, the goal was very well taken, well set up and finished.... but... at the other end of the field, I'm damn sure the dutch striker was fouled on the edge of the box (still trying to find replay to confirm) and the ref let play continue which directly lead to the Spanish goal. If and when I find the footage and I turn out to be wrong then fair play, Spain won it fair and square, but if I'm right then the World Cup Final 2010 was decided by a bad ref call.

All in all it was a pretty crap match all round, but the ref stopped the play waaaay too many times, I don't think I've ever seen a match stopped so many times. I don't think they got a full minute of play. And 14 yellow cards? , sorry the ref was horrible and it makes me ashamed that he is English.

That happened before I started watching, obviously, I'd have remembered that. And yeah, that needs to be a long suspension of some kind, that kind of kick is deadly. Holy crap.

Looked to me like Elia went down too easily. My boy could have took a harder dunch than that and stayed on his feet. As it was a match of clogging and diving, Webb maybe saw it as a further act of gamesmanship.
No worry, it's over now til 2012 and the European Championships.

Weren't the ref stopped the match. The players did it all for him. Can't blame Webb for pulling up dangerous tackles.

Besides replays, they should put a couple of ref's assistants on the field who can call a play penalty, those side assistants seem almost useless to me. The game has to come into the 21st century man! It was like watching the Soviets vs the Canadiens with all of the ruskies diving. Get some order in here please!

Can't comment about the Elia thing as I said, but the stopping play, come on JOTS, there were many stops where no one was even touched and many that were obviously played for the ball and missed with minor contact.
I've taken and given harder tackles than many of them without the whistle blowing, yes there were a few meaty ones but with 2 or maybe 3 exceptions, they were all mild offenses, most of which could have been played on.
Unless football really is turning into a wuss's sport. Watch womens football, they take harder hits and just get up and carry on, it's all the pathetic rolling around that adds to the drama. As I said, Torress at the end of the match was hobbling because of hamstring, ok he wasn't fouled or trying to get one, but he looked like he had been shot in the leg on the field.... until the final whistle went and all of a sudden he was jumping around.... sorry but if you have an injury like that , no matter how excited you are you still can't jump around like he was.
These modern football players give us blokes a bad name, like you said, your kid could take harder hits.
It just saddens me to see this crap, as for Webb, I'm not the only one who thinks he was piss poor, most of the media agree.

Spain won it, final match aside they did deserve it and I am happy for them, but I hate it when world class players are too afraid to actually play the game, hell even the comentator (English but not sure who) said the same thing while still in normal time.

All opinion at the end of the day I guess, I just hope for the sake of the sport they introduce video refereeing.

It would be awesome, a guy dives, the decision is conetested and proven to be a clear dive, the player who dived is booked and fined. This action would elimitnate 95% of diving and acting within 1 season. Think how awesome the World Cup would be with no diving or bad ref decisions.... it would once again be a beautiful game and the greatest sport on earth.

Ned, your post reminds me of a joke among my football fan friends in Sweden. "If it's a sport for men, why do we let the Italians play?" LOL

  29. Rikky

Rikky Wile E. Coyote - One of a kind

You have to let the Italians play or players start going missing:-D

Where countries pump money into sport and players to ensure the win the Italians pump money into Ref's to ensure the win, they start them off young at Ref-camp, some of those talented Italian prodigies can miscall a foul at 5 yards!:-D

Think I ment or should have elaborated a little "the thread turned out a lot better than I thought" was more to the thread was actually used, and used in a great way for the purose spirit it was stickied (we all know too well how threads can be derailed), I enjoyed the comments and debates over various events that happened in the games.

Glad me and Rikky decided it was a good idea.

Would make me think of doing the same again, and I generally hate stickies, but and this was something I was going to ponder more and post at the weekend but what the hell, you can all chat over it until I get back to the forum later in the week.

Just fielding this thought out as just thinking more over this just now, I wouldnt support a new added forum area*, but if one of the lesser used ones was removed/renamed/merged (Collectors Corner is the slowest least used of the lot) would a sporting topic area be a good idea and be used, over posting sports stuff in the lounge? *if used then I would suggest an added topic area*

Was thinging for all sports other than motor racing as members can always use http://www.pedaltothemetal.com/forums/ :) could do with generating more traffic and discussions there, but not a pre-requisite.

LOL @ derailed threads!:-D Seriously, I don't see how a thread like this could be 'derailed' unless someone came in here with too much passion. Take a cold shower please.:p:-D

Oh, the Euro Cup is a couple of years away, does anyone think that FIFA will finally get off their collective butts and actually do something besides drawing a pay?!rolleyes:-D

  39. joey off the street

In a word, no. They've had every opportunity to rectify the situation of bad calls in the game. There's a possibility that UEFA could champon the technology, but FIFA would probably poo poo it and keep football in the dark ages.

@ Halo. That is a very good idea. I look forward to being able to let off steam when Newcastle get relegated again.

Actually JOTS, I was reading yesterday that FIFA have decided to reopen the "File" on technological officiating at the July meeting. They are talking about goal line cams and the possibility of each team having 3 contest calls for events outside the box. So we may see it yet, since the argument is 25+years old and in light of the massive negative response to this world cup officiating, I think they might actually do something about it.
The way I see it is FIFA is run by people who want to keep the sport as original as possible, tradition if you will, trouble is, as I've said before is the players don't have anywhere near the sportsmanship of years gone by with players such as Cryuff, Bobby Charlton, Pele etc etc, if you look back you will see that diving/acting and bad calls started in the early 80's, couldn't tell you why but back in the 50's,60's and 70's it was minimal because the players had pride, back then it was much more prestigious to win fairly, the old addage, if you have to cheat then you don't deserve to win because clearly you are not good enough..... unfortunately most players now will take any advantage they can get and many are willing to lie, cheat and steal thier way to a win. Therefor FIFA has to acknowledge that 1 ref and 2 linesmen cannot possibly keep up with the amount of faking going on. Fingers crossed.

@Halo.... Only one way to find out dude ;)
