Following on from Best FREE Firewall 4 U ? at http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=219340 , I came across these interesting articles from Matousec.

Matousec report says your antivirus app is way too easy to exploit.

    http://www.matousec.com/info/articl...ity-software.php#table-of-vulnerable-software

Apparently none of them are good enough. Everyone was rated "Vulnerable"
I give up. :cry Your comments?

I've seen these before and I think this demonstrates the best anti-virus is still the person on the keyboard!

Most infections I've seen have come from user error, I've long told my classes to ONLY download from MS or MG, period. And if you suddenly get a virus warning, crtl-alt-del out of it, or just pull the plug!

Now, I do wonder if a program like sandboxie gives the ultimate protection, can a virus get around it?? :confused

Hi Bazza , I will have to say, anything is better than nothing, and Brandy does have a good point. A lot has to do with the user in the first place.. And, what they are clicking on.

As far as your attachment goes? YIKES :eek! According to that, NONE are any good. I would not be online with nothing. Not today!! One needs to have a FW and an AV. Period. Pure suicide with out it. One just needs to find one that is compatible with their system. ;)

@Brandy: I have heard of people that use "sandboxie", and heard it was good. I don't use it, never have.

    Those are my thoughts ;)

Good one, samtal. But I think it still goes back to what works best for one's particular system.

For instance, I am using AVG 9, and PC Tools FW. Not everyone would agree with that, and say, "you should switch" But, it works for me, and I am satisfied with it.. Had no issues with either..

So, I would say, it would depend on the person, and their system, because:
what works for XP, may not work for Windows 7 ,or Vista. ;)

I use Avast on all my computers. I sued to use AVG, but I do so much modding of my PC games, and AVG is really against doing that and won't let me exempt my game exe files, so I just switched anti-virus. Avast is working out very nicely.

Thanks to all who replied. :cool
I have to agree, the report (or jpg attachment) made the situation look pretty bleak. :cry

As many have suggested, anything is better than nothing.
As others have suggested, it is mostly down to the user to use common sense.

Hope you didn't find the info too depressing. :-D

36 false positives and an undetected worm. :(

That's what I get for posting when I'm half asleep! :-D

Speaking of false positives, Avira is one often noted for a high rate
of false positives. Major Attitude had commented on this 3 years ago.

    The following PDF document

    Anti-Virus Comparitive
from av-comparitives.org in August 2009 shows that
although Avira AntiVir Premium 9.0.0.446 got the second highest detection rate score of
99.4%, bested only by G Data 20.0.4.9 at 99.8%, it was given an overall ranking of
Advanced rather than Advanced+ due to its high number of false positives. (see 'Award
levels reached in this test' near the end of the document)

The chart in the follow up (pdf doc)

    Proactive/Retrospective test
in November 2009 charting the on-demand detection of
    virus/malware
show Avira getting the highest score followed by G DATA, Kaspersky and
    ESET NOD32.

    In the (pdf doc)

Summary Report 2009 - Awards, Winners and Comments
, Avira won the Gold award
for Overall Performance - Low System Impact
    .

I sued to use Avira, but now I'm using Avast! free.
