Depends what you want and who your looking for,if your just after a fling then I suppose why not, fake your interested in what they're saying.:-D I think that's disingenuous, men constantly play the game just so they can sleep with women, they don't really care what women are saying or what they think they just put on an act and vice versa.

Well what if you meet someone and you only had a small amount of time to talk, what do you ask? Do you come here often? What did you do last night?Too easy to answer and you probably don't care about the answers:-D

What if you put out an intellectual challenge right off the bat? If you scare someone off they're prolly not cool person or they ain't intelligent enough to realise what your doing, your not really asking a question your challenging them to a game of wit, what if someone comes back with a great answer and you have a laugh? You can be pretty sure they are intelligent, have a sense of humor and don't scare easy.:) 'And if you do have a relationship it will most probably never be boring, fun'

Funny looks? I've not got time for people who judge other people because they are different or try and do something out of the norm, life is freakin boring it constantly needs spicing up,if someone does something out of the ordinary, something random and edgy most people will look at them funny because its different, its doesn't fit in with the natural social norm but I think people like that are awesome and make the world go round.

Rikky I'm quite sure many would tell you I'm "different" , I get funny looks all day long because I'm an attention whore :-D

Personally what I believe is if the conversation strikes then the possibility of friendship is higher. Also my idea of small talk isn't the standard weather crap, I usually find something unique about the person or situation at the time to comment on in a way I feel suits. Works 99.9% of the time.

Oh just for the record, I'm talking about conversing with people in general, not just pullin' birds ;)
Honestly I was always one for getting on well with people but I never played the one night stand game.

So in a round about way, I'm kind of agreeing with you... but as you say, it depends on what your goal is, or if you even have a goal, I just say what I think... which has earn me a few free drinks.... the kind you have to catch mid air :-D

This is the most off the tracks birthday thread ever :-D

@ Rikky, if you were come up to me and ask me if I were religious, I'd think you'd be wanting to start a fight. I don't consider my self religious but as a Christian most people (that aren't) want to pick fights and try to prove me wrong and I'm just not into fighting.. debating I don't mind but fighting I do.

Re discussions/interactions with people in general.:- Depends on a lot of things. Whereas I do enjoy an in-depth, intellectual type discussions, coming up someone you don't know and immediately wanting to get into topics like "is God relevant in anthropomorphic form; and is the questions of theodicy valid in the 21st century; and can one equate Existentialistic Nihilism to String and M-Theory in a quasi-materialistic world" is not always what other people may care to talk about at the time, even if they are capable of some form of sentient dialogue. As for beliefs - met just as many, if not more Atheists and Agnostics that are ignorant and narrow minded, as one who have some form of 'religious' beliefs. That's more of a mindset, rather than belief system, including the 'superior intellect' mentality.
Like myself, sometimes people just may want to lighten up for a while and let the universe take care of itself for a bit. It's like physical exercise - some is good for you, some folks can run a Marathon, but it's not much fun running a Marathon 24/7. Trivial is fine, as long as that's not all there is to a person. Guess that's when getting to know someone first comes into play.

Does all this make lick of sense to anyone? roflmao

I wouldn't word it like that,it would be obvious I'm genuinely interested in what you think because I'm am.

What if I just asked you right off the bat "So do you think there's a god?" "What do you believe the purpose of life is?"

So if I asked are you religious or a really deep question you'd think I was starting a fight or a jerk and that's fine,I'd instantly know we are just different people and I'd be right we are like chalk and cheese.:-D

I would rarely just come out and say that straight away like a one liner but its usually only a few seconds before I ask a question on something I'm actually interested in,most people if they talk with strangers do it just to pass the time for example in a doctors waiting room, few people have the cahonies to just strike up a conversation with stranger but many really want to talk, what I've noticed as well if you fire up one person and break the ice then everyone joins in, the only thing holding them back was looking like an idiot or weirdo, what's socially acceptable practice, its a shame.

I'm the opposite I see people as a treasure trove of information and I wanna crack the lid,the coolest person in the world could be stood opposite you with an amazing story or life lesson,I love talking to elderly people for that reason they seem to be much more outgoing than youngsters, every elderly person has at least one really cool story.

But from your point of view your stood at a bar just a having a beer, someone stands next to you while they buy a beer and just asks "do you think god is relevant in anthropomorphic form?"

Would you laugh?Would you think this is an interesting person?Would you think they are a weirdo?

I'd laugh and think its was awesome :-D I'd buy that person a beer and let them proceed in defining their views on the subject.

You're supposed to try to figure out what the other person is interested in, find a common interest, and then talk about that... no wonder you're not successful at this dating thing. LOL

    :p

  8. Rikky

Rikky Wile E. Coyote - One of a kind

That's what I do?I'm interested in whatever other people are interested in,because I'm interested in what people are interested in,the more passion someone has for something or the stranger it is the better.

One of the sexiest things I've ever seen was woman from NASA talk about the solar system,it wasn't because she was hot or anything like that or because I LOVE the solar system that much, she was just so damn passionate about it.I love hearing about peoples passions and why they love them so much.

Its great being around people who have strong passions for things,I think its great seeing how much enjoyment a subject brings someone and great learning about the intricacies of their chosen subject or hobby.

EDIT and usually passionate people have firm well thought views, beliefs and reasoning.

And I think I'm out,you can all now synchronously exhale:-D

Well, if they were genuinely interested in the topic, then great. Most people tend to be intellectually lazy and like to pretend things are beyond their comprehension and go on to some other trivial subject, rather than actually rub a few neurons together, even if they are capable of much more. Bit it's like the computer business - would rather have someone do the thinking for them.
I can do trivial, but I do hear what you're saying in so far as intellectual stimulation and information and pursuits are concerned. Guess that's why I like to hang at some of the sentient forums when I have the time. I have had some good conversations and friendships based on spontaneous intellectual discussions like you mentioned, but it is rather rare, unfortunately.

I've seen your discussions on here, Rikky. All joking aside, I think you are probably fairly intimidating when you talk to people about the serious things you like to talk about. The fact is, as we saw in Hot Topics, people can be passionate about something and still be either a) uneducated about it, or b) unable to articulate intelligently about it. You do neither.

lol...I have to say, if I met someone I had an interest in and they went straight for the hardcore deep discussions, I'd probably go omg..and head out of there. I agree with whoever said you need just a little casual chit chat to work your way up to hard core. Kind of conversation foreplay. LOL

I think this thread is awesome, it started off in celebration, then went silly and has developed into a thread trying to help Rikky find a date.
Does no one else see the irony?

If this thread continues and Rikky figures out what he's missing, he may find a date.... eventually get married and possibly pop a little'un.... then this thread should be the official little'un birthday thread for it's whole life..... of course this would work better if you call the kid "Ned" :-D

That's different, at first I'd try to gauge if you were serious or just trying to be obnoxious. If I determined that you were serious, I'd give you a serious answer. (depending on my mood, however, I don't particularly like to have conversations with people I don't know but if you catch me in the right mood, I might just talk to ya :-D)

I've never heard chalk and cheese before LOL.. Only if you asked me if I was religious out of the blue would I think that.. it's such a personal & random question that would make me wonder why you are asking.

If it makes you feel better, I've never been on a "real" date myself http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii269/theogrit/1sm032dunno.gif

  23. Nedlamar

I think it all depends on what kind of woman you are talking to. Like I said, cheekiness and laughter is the right ticket.
I'm about as steroetypical a "Bloke" as you will ever find, the ironic thing is.... I'm not, I just act like that in almost a mocking way and I guess a lot of girls find that funny because you're making fun of what men are like in womens eyes.
This action can also very easily put you in the "Friend" zone :-D

For myself, back when I was young enough to REALLY enjoy going out on I date, I couldn't. I would get so tongue-tied that I never could ask the girl out.:-o
Now I'm at an age where I have loosened up enough that I can cut-up and tease the ladies all day long.:-D But the problem now is that they always feel safe around me and I can't bring myself to break that trust.:(
    DARN. DARN. DARN.:cry:cry:cry

Also: How did this thread change from a Birthday thread to one about dating?

  25. Rikky

Get some money together then and I'll take you out :-D

I've only got the dating avatar as a joke it doesn't say anything about me I feel great, its just a doorway for people to make fun of me and it worked:-D But thanks for sentiment

That's how I get usable intel from prospective acquaintances :major

I actually prefer to talk to someone I was comfortable with talking to then someone who thinks they are full of wit.. I'm as goofy and silly as the next person (sometimes even more so LOL) but I want to be able to have a serious conversation as well.

    Ahh, the fine line :)

Never to be crossed nor yielded to.

I still say the good old fashioned pick up lines are best.

"Wow, you smell nice.... did you run here?"

    Or

"Your hair is amazing, is it windy outside"

    Or the real grabber...

"Would you like a Tic-Tac?...No?... You really should"

Never fails...... to get a reaction :-D

One liners are funny,if you don't try you'll never know:-D The story of how a couple I know met is like that.

Man - Where have you been all my life?

Woman - I haven't been alive for most of it

My parents have been married for over 30 years :cool they do hate each others guts, argue constantly and I'm sure they are plotting to kill each other but you can't give birth to the second coming without cracking a few skulls:-D

    Thank you. :)

  36. Rikky

Rikky Wile E. Coyote - One of a kind

Did any work? I think its all in the way you say them,a guy should get props just for having the moxy to actually speak to a girl and vice versa of course.

I think if you come out with a bad line quickly followed by a sincere apology you have the best chance:-D In fact that would be a good line "I'd like to apologise in advance for the terrible one liner I'm about to give you, right are you ready?":)

  37. Mimsy

Mimsy Superior Imperial Queen of the MG Games Forum

    1. No, none of them did. Let's just say that no "past-midnight-desperation-moves" were ever given the benefit of doubt... :-D

    2. Confidence is so rare we should cheer you on just for having it now? Please. I don't know what kind of pathetic world you live in, but in mine, having the courage to do something has absolutely nothing to do with the outcome of that action. If you're hideous and smell bad, it doesn't matter how confident you are, you'll still go home alone. Tough luck, Casanova.

All I'm saying is that if all a guy has is good one-liners, then it doesn't matter how good they are, he probably still won't get anywhere. You need to shower regularly and a few other basic requirements as well.

  41. Nedlamar

    Nedlamar MajorGeek

Whoa shot down in shock and awe style there Rikky :-D

@Mimsy... Can't speak for Rikky although I'm fairly sure he's on the same page as me, the only people who use one liners in seriousness are not going to get anywhere, this isn't 1980 lol , some of us guys use them just for the laugh.

At the end of the day no one man can tell anyone how to pick up a woman, it depends on the man and the woman, look for the spark, if it does'nt happen within the first minute then it probably wont.

Do what I did Rikky, find love on an internet forum like this :-D

  42. Rikky

Rikky Wile E. Coyote - One of a kind

IMO one liners just break the ice, they never work instantly but they can open the door to start chatting, when girls have come up to me with one liners I've always laughed and started talking them :-D

Yeah Ned for a laugh, you always fail so yeah I agree with what your saying Mimsy but it can still open doors to a conversation,if all you've got after that are slurred drunken ramblings then yeah:-D

EDIT Have you seen that scene in trainspotting when Renton has one last desperate ditch attempt to pull a girl by tryna talk to he as she's leaving the club and she totally intellectually out matches him?Like that.

Agreed, one-liners are great ice breakers, and a guy who's willing to make fun of himself to get a good laugh usually improves his chances... a sense of humor combined with a lack of ego is usually an appealing thing. ;)

  44. dyamond

    dyamond Imelda Marcos of Majorgeeks

Wow.. is this thread still going? :-D

Honestly, I can't give the time of day to someone that pops me a one liner, it takes no thought and to me, doesn't sound like you are interested in (really) getting to know me. Then again, I am on the kind of anti-social side sometimes :-o :-D

  45. Nedlamar

    Nedlamar MajorGeek

I rest my case *takes bow*

By the way, thats what I've been trying to explain but Mimsy (being a girl) explained it in a much more understandable way :-D

Although I will say this for myself at least, with a lack of ego I frequently go way overboard with fake ego to cover for the lack of, if you see what I mean, like I'm not just cool... I'm frickin' superman! :strong
Which is a complete lie because I'm very uncomfortable in public lol .... unless it's on my own turf, then I'm king of the world....my world anyway :-D

@Dyamond... Depends on the one liner, what if it's said in an obviously joking and laughable manner? Like I said, anyone who delivers a serious one liner is probably wearing a pastel suit and tshirt, with slip on shoes and no socks.... 80's FTW! :strong

Hey baby, are your legs tired because you've been running through my mind all night :cool
