We need a little more info. What is the exact name and model number of your router and modem? Open a command prompt and type the following without the quotes and paste ALL the results back here, "ipconfig /all".

Take care, isn't the same have conectivity to "display a website", we must check that.

Do you know how to do a ping?
Did you changed any value in the adaptor settings?
So could you ping some website?
    Are you using Windows XP?

to answer both of your questions and requests:

    retirednow:

im not sure if your asking for the make and model number for my verizon modem/router or the network adapter on the laptop. the adapter is a "intel 8255x-based pci ethernet adapter (10/100)". it has a yellow (!) next to it in device manager. if i plug in a ethernet cord, restart, under network connections, it says im connected and no yellow (!) next to the network adapter in device manger, but in the device manager the title for the network card changed from "intel 8255x-based pci ethernet adapter (10/100)" to "Intel PRO/100+ minipci". still no internet.

Seems like you're having troubles with the Ethernet driver, because you're reciving some connectivity from internet.

But i want to be clear with something, you said:

What do you mean with "restart under network connections"

    1. Seems like you're using a laptop WiFi Card but i want to be sure, tell me please if i'm right.

    2. In case of a laptop please tell us the model.

    3. Obviously the name of your network adapter will change if you work with a WiFi card, because are different adapters, one for cord and one for WiFi.

    4. Are you using windows xp/vista/7?

    5. Now i will wait for your response, but that "yellow (!)" close to any adapter in the device manager that means is a problem with the specific hardware that has it, could be just the driver or a damage in the hardware.

It sound like you perhaps have 2 separate network controllers in the computer. Is there more then one listed in Device Manager?

Did you change the Physical address to 00-00-00-00-00-00 or that the way it showed up in ipconfig /all?

    to itmortiz:

its not a wifi card its a adapter that you plug ethernet cable into, i do not believe this laptop has a wireless capabilities, its quite old, its a gateway model number SOLO 5300. windows xp.

right now for example, the computer is on and the ethernet cord was pluged in else where, the device manager says "intel pro/100+ minipci" with the yellow (!), and in network connections there is nothing at all. i am going to do a restart of the system itself...ok now after a restart of xp, in device manager, under network adapters where the "intel pro/100+ minipci" is and had the yellow (!), well no more yellow (!). and under network connections where there was nothing, there are two things, internet gateway and under it says internet connection, enabled. then there is a LAN or high-speed internet, under this is says enabled, intel pro/100+ minipci.

    to answer shnerdly:

nope only one listed in device manger, and i never changed the physical address, its just like that..

ok werid thing is, i now have internet, but its never stable, if i need to switch wires for another computer and bring it back to this laptop im going to have to deal with issue all the time, how can i correct this error? and wth i did this in the past, a restart, and it didnt work! ahhhh

My dear friend, when i said "wireless" i was suspecting you were using a laptop for the ethernet name adapter.

It's possible to have problems with your drivers, that's why sometimes windows detect it correctly and after restart not.

I had a similar problem with Linux ubuntu and now with windows 7 to recognize a Via Rhine II Ethernet adapter.

I suggest to you, to reinstall with the correct and specific drivers of your laptop.

Tell me the model and i will help you to find them out. By the way, to know the specific device what you have in the laptop please use Everest, can download it here:

    http://www.lavalys.com/support/downloadshttp://www.lavalys.com/support/downloads

Also, if you updated your laptop, a service pack or something that could have some influence in drivers, take it in mind.

    Cheers.

when it does connect i have been doing windows updates, and recently i went to device manager and updated the driver for the network card. seems like the yellow (!) doesn't show up anymore, but this computer still goes in and out with an internet connection even though it says its connected,

here is the report from everest:
