Everthing I download expects a newer version of Windows.

I still use a dinosaur: Win98se.:confused Almost nothing I download works; it expects a newer version, :cry even when I've tried to download and install a service pack for Win98.rolleyes Is there anything out there that actually works?? If there is, I'll put a free link to it on my website <snip>

 

Oops. Forgot about not posting links. Still looking for updates and/or service pack for W98SE. Please help???

 

Don't know if this will help, but I usually see lots of software for Windows 95 - XP in thrift stores.

Win98 Updates

I had to reinstall Win98SE twice this year (used it for 9 years with no major problems). MS would not allow me to re-register. No registration = no updates. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

 

Is there a reason you are still on Windows 98SE? This hasn't been supported in years.

EdwardEdwards, It's nice that you want to try to fix your OLD 98SE computer, but you really need to upgrade it a little bit. Also, you've responded to a 4 year old thread and I kinda think it's dead by now.

I've heard lots of people complaining about the later versions. Many claim that each new version has its own problems. More user-friendly but more unstable. The first time it was loaded, it ran 9 years. Has any more recent Windows version ever run that long?

 

For software developers it gets increasingly difficult to maintain compatibility with old operating systems.

The only option you have is download old software versions for your old operating system. You will have to find out what version of a software still works with W98 - e.g. you can use Adobe Reader 6, or Flash Player 8 on W98. However, some new documents on the Internet may not render correctly with these old softwares.

You're welcome Eddie! I have bought old software at thrift stores myself, and been quite pleased. I was the neighborhood geek where we used to live (we just moved), and so I got all the old, discarded computers. I sometimes kept them, sometimes cleaned them up and gave them to others. With proper warning of sunsetting support and all. One I turned over to the local sheriff...

I was finally able to download the service pack. Wow! what a difference!! Now I'm using Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0.0.24 and Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.20 with FlashGet & Mozilla FlashGot . If you haven't tried them you're missing out. Mozilla provides their 3 for free.

 

Awesome! Glad you were able to get the service pack! Those do make a big difference!

Found the updates on MajorGeeks web-site; and now that I have Firefox2, Thunderbird2, Flashgot and Flashget; it works better than ever. The more I'm discouraged, the harder I try. Thank you!!

Yikes - A necro thread! :eek

I know they stopped OS update support on 98SE, but last time I checked (about a year ago, while setting up a virtual PC) the existing updates and security patches were still available, without registering . . . just nothing new since '06.

Be a bummer if they have dumped what was there - I use a virtual 98 machine to play some older games and such.

I found the updates (Service Pack) on Major Geeks web-site. WOW! what a difference. Much better than what MS offers/ed.
