About the beginning of this month, I had a virus on my pc. I don't know if that had anything to do with it, but at the same time, my onboard audio seemed to have gone out. I just got a new pci sound card today, installed it, and I still have no sound coming out of the speakers. I tried changing slots, toggling the onboard audio on and off . . . when I go into sounds and audio devices from the control panel, it tells me that there are no default devices and it's grayed out, so I can't choose one. Can someone please steer me in the right direction?

I have a Dell Dimension B110 running Windows XP.

I'll attach all of my log files, including the originals so you know what was done then . . . this will take a few messages (there's a lot of them!)

    Thanks in advance!

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Based on your logs, you had a form of a Virut infection that affected quite a few of your startup processes. One of these startup processes was for you Analog Devices audio card. The below is quoted from you SUPERAntiSpyware log
You will need to reinstall this software to fix this. See the CDs that came with your PC or go to the Dell website to get them. You have a little more cleanup work to do which I will give below but this will not fix your sound problems. That is something you need to do by reinstalling needed software and drivers.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 11

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R3 - URLSearchHook: agihelper.AGUtils - {0BC6E3FA-78EF-4886-842C-5A1258C4455A} - mscoree.dll (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: agihelper.AGUtils - {0bc6e3fa-78ef-4886-842c-5a1258c4455a} - mscoree.dll (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: WormRadar.com IESiteBlocker.NavFilter - {3CA2F312-6F6E-4B53-A66E-4E65E497C8C0} - (no file)
    O18 - Protocol: linkscanner - {F274614C-63F8-47D5-A4D1-FBDDE494F8D1} - (no file)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

WOW! Ok . . . to be clear . . . I'm running MGTools now and there are a LOT of other things to check. You want me to ONLY check these 5 that you've listed to fix, correct?

  7. Pamamonster

    Pamamonster Private E-2

Also, before running Combofix, do you want me to shut down the firewall software? You said antivirus and antispyware . . . I want to be sure I'm doing this right!!

Gotcha! I did all that . . . well, I haven't been to Dell's site yet to dl that, but here are the logs.

I still have trouble with IE7 shutting itself down randomly. It's not a big deal because I'm using Chrome the majority of the time, anyway, but sometimes I have to use IE, and that gets frustrating that it's not working properly.

Also, I went to Dell's support site and downloaded the driver software for soundmax and uninstalled and reinstalled it, but I still have no sound. WMP tells me there's a problem with my audio device. :(

  12. Pamamonster

    Pamamonster Private E-2

Dell is telling me to run WinXP repair utility then reinstall all my motherboard and audio drivers. But apparently I have the wrong XP disk because when I tried to run the repair utility, all it gave me was a DOS prompt and I don't know what to do from there.

The new ComboFix log shows that SUPERAntiSpyware did not completely remove your Gen-Virut infection which infected all of your startup programs so let's do this manually. You will need to reinstall your sound card software again but not until we finish getting everything cleaned up otherwise you may just reinfect it. Wait until I say you are clean. If we cannot get your sound to come back after removing all the malware, you may have to do a reinstall of your whole system to repair the effects of what this infection did.

    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it:
    Code:
    KILLALL::
    Driver::
    ServicepointService

    RenV::
    c:\program files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\Reader_sl .exe
    c:\program files\Analog Devices\Core\smax4pnp .exe
    c:\program files\Common Files\Adobe\ARM\1.0\AdobeARM .exe
    c:\program files\QuickTime\qttask .exe
    c:\program files\Windows Media Player\WMPNSCFG .exe

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{171DEBEB-C3D4-40b7-AC73-056A5EBA4A7E}]

Okay that looks better. At this immediate time, are you still have problems with your sound. Also do any of the below have any problems running properly:
    • Avast
    • ZoneAlarm
    • Google Update

  16. Pamamonster

    Pamamonster Private E-2

Yes, I am still without sound, but I have not attempted to reinstall the drivers again because I was waiting for your ok.

As far as I can tell, I am not having any trouble with any of those programs. (And I just noticed that IE has been set to my default browser again, and it seems to be doing fine.)

Okay then let's do one more thing before you reinstall your Analog Devices drivers and software. Also make sure that you are reinstalling the correct software/drivers for your system.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SoundMAXPnP] C:\Program Files\Analog Devices\Core\smax4pnp.exe

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

I've still got no sound. :cry Dell's website doesn't recognize their ingenius, not-so-handy service tag ID number, but I do know I have a Dimension B110 so I select that model, download and run the SoundMax driver package as well as the Intel Chipset drivers and still nothing. I'm afraid to mess with windows and risk losing all my photos of my kids. I have a recovery disk for my husband's laptop that has Vista on it . . . could I upgrade to Vista and help the situation? Or can you tell me how to otherwise repair what I've got without having to reload the whole stinking computer? This is frustrating. But I REALLY appreciate all your help!!

Not legal to use his Vista on your PC and it would not work anyway since the license is in use on his PC. In addition, a Recovery Disk is not a full install and it is designed for his PC to reset it to factory ship state. It would not work on your PC.

It still may be necessary since the malware may have corrupted too much of your installation. Normally we would send you to the Hardware or Software Forum for this but since it is a little slow here this weekend, I will keep looking at this.

First what do you see when you open Device Manager
    • You can open Device Manager by double-clicking on the System icon in Control Panel, choosing the Hardware tab, and clicking Device Manager.
and look for you Sound Card information. Do you see any yellow exclamation points which indicate errors or missing drivers?

Does the speaker icon appear in your tray? If yes, double click on it to open Volume Control and make sure the volume is turned up and also make sure that nothing is muted.

Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop
    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...
    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.
    • Attach this log to your next message. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

No, there is no indication in my device manager that there is anything wrong. However, when I go to the audio settings (I removed it from my tray, but when I get to it through Control Panel) everything is grayed out and it says "No Audio Device." (I've attached a photo of this for you)

From Device Manager right click on the SoundMax device and then select Uninstall. The Reboot your PC. Upon reboot, it should locate the device again and automatically reinstall the drivers. See if that works.

No such luck. Still no sound. :(

Bring up the Sounds and Audio Devices Properties form again and select the Hardware tab. Does it list the Devices? Does it show the SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio and does it list Audio Codecs and Legacy Audio Drivers. If so, can you select the SoundMax item and then click Troubleshoot

Okay then I suggest that you try the Hardware Forum but a reinstall could be in your future. Normally the best thing to do is to delete the devices and perhaps the existing drivers too and then to reinstall everything.

One thing you may wish to try is to go back to a Restore Point from before the time where you lost sound to see if that helps. Even if that restores any malware, we could just remove it again.

  26. Pamamonster

    Pamamonster Private E-2

I couldn't find a restore point before it started acting up. I know once a month I run my "maintenance utilities" (regcleaner, zappit, smart defrag, etc) and it's supposed to create a restore point every time I do it, but I couldn't find one.

Thank you so much for all of your help!!

Too bad, but it was worth a shot.

Since we have done all we can do here and you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
