    Hi,

    I have an Advent 5401, with Windows Vista Home Premium.

    I was using it today, and it just shut down on its own. When I tried to start it up, the Advent Screen at the start was all blurry with blue lines through it. Then it went to another screen that tried to fix it. I did this about 4 or 5 times, and then ran a Destructive System Restore, I did this twice and it didn't work. Then I started it in safe mode, and the Vista screen came on and asked for a user name and password, but won't accept mine. No other users are registered on it, and I can't get past this screen! Any suggestions?

    Thanks

    Are you using a Vista cd to do the restore with or are you going into a restore partition to do that?

    Hi thanks for the reply.

    I have no CD. It failed to reboot and took me to a screen that said Windows had failed to sart properly and gave the options of, something along the lines of auto fix, system restore, destructive restore etc. I chose destructive restore as a last resort, as I had tried everything else more than once.

    Thanks for that, but no joy I'm afraid. I made the disk okay. The problem I had is that during the installation I got to the enter product key, pressed enter and got the following;

    Windows cannot open the required file; F:sources\install.wim the file does not exist Error code 0x80070002

    What happens now, is that when I turn the laptop on I get to choose an operating system

    Windows Vista
    Windows Vista (Recovered)

    When I select Vista i get to a blue/green Vista screen with a window on it saying other user, I click on this and it asks for a user name and password, but doesn't accept mine, and I don't know of any others for my laptop.

    When I select Vista (Recovered) it gives the usual options of safe mode etc, but whichever one you select, it just keeps rebooting, shutting down, rebooting, shutting down, and so on.

    Not looking good :cry

    I just selected safe mode with networking, and it took me to the other user blue/green screen, again asking for a username and password that I don't have

    What of the UBCD with password reset? Reset any and all user accounts without a password and have a go, always can change passwords later?

    Or, pull the HDD, place into another unit and scan for nasties?
