okay im using Windows Vista Home Edition.. but yeah, okay.. well this is really weird.. but i cant access the Windows Update website.. and when the automatic updates come up for it, it just says "Windows can't check for updates" but it'll show me the updates it was trying to download and install.. i tried to goto "www.vistaheads.com".. it works fine.. but every time i click a post that has the words "windows update" in it.. it'll do the same thing it does on the actual Windows Update site, "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage".. it seems like every site that has something to do with the words "Windows Update" doesnt work.. i have no clue what to do.. ive been trying to fix this laptop for a buddy of mine.. deleted a ton of viruses if that helps.. help please! thanks!

yeah thats the site ive been trying to get onto.. that, and "windowsupdate.microsoft.com/"

and yes, i scanned with spybot, ad-aware, malwarebytes, super anti spyware, and ESET online scan.. even ran CCleaner.. on every single program, it found atleast 1 virus

also, im on my desktop now, and the error code i get is "WindowsUpdate_80072EFE"

also, the appearence of my laptop will change randomly whenever i restart my computer.. i just restarted it 3 times in a row, and everytime its been on the "Windows Standard" sceme.. but other times randomly.. it'll be back to the normal vista sceme.. this is sooooo weird, i dont know what to do!

So you are saying that you do have a virus? Has it successfully been removed/quarantined?

    See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941/

im saying that i scanned my computer with all of them programs that i listed.. found viruses.. quarantined them, and deleted them while they were quarantined.. i ran a couple of the scans again just to make sure in safe mode and found nothing.. it seems like it has to be a virus because anything that deals with the words "Windows Update" or that error code results in "Internet Explorer cannot dispaly the webpage".. its sooo weird, i dont get it at all.

Hello, go through the READ AND RUN ME:
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407

Take your time and follow all the steps/instructions.

Start a new thread and attach the requested logs in Malware Removal:
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=35

Be patient and don't bump your post. Could be remnants of malware etc which have also routed IE through a proxy server. This can also effect other browsers and your AV from updating.

Let the experts in Malware Removal advise you on how to proceed.

    Cheers..

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
