I thought that OEM software can only be delivered with specific hardware (not sold as retail)?

    Who knows?
Maybe that is why they only list a PO Box, and no phone number.
Here's hoping it is genuine offer.

I'll have to take back all I said about the Software company. :-o :-D

Now the work begins. I'm still googling for a 500 gig, 7000rpm 2.5" laptop hard drive at the right price.

Great it sorted itself out Bazza. :) This past week must have been sorta roller coaster ride for ya. Happy hunting for a new drive but lesson learned to purchase only from reputable websites eh?

    bigbazza R.I.P. 14/12/2011 - Good Onya Geek

True, oma. But the deal was too good to pass up. Dealing with sites in your own country is probably safer than buying overseas, though. :)

My thinking is gotten a bit more careful as I'm getting old and taking less chances compared to some years ago. :-o It is: if you need the stuff and see a good deal get it. If not really needed, don't. If getting it be careful where you buy regardless where one lives. Purchasing in the same country doesn't mean that it is necessarily safer, only perhaps less hassle with customs etc? In the past I've sometimes ordered online (often due to illness) but only with reputable dealers/stores and it was always preceded by making phone call(s) first. I MUST have a tel# from where I buy. Prefer doing hands-on shopping hands down. ;)

Good advice, oma. The lack of phone number, and address, had me really worried.

The times I have been ripped off (not many) have been dealing with overseas people. I now do a google search to see if the firm/company/person rates a mention. If I had done that first on one ripper-off, I wouldn't have been caught.

I tried installing W7 Ultimate on a brand new Seagate Momentus 500 gig, 2.5" drive, yesterday.

It was a thorough disaster. :cry

I don't know what I did wrong but I will sort it out eventually. ;)
Swopped the drive, and back to XP to access MG and the Net. :-D

I had multiple installations of W7 Ultimate, but none of them were fully installed. :-o :confused
I spoke to a computer store techie and he had never heard of that.

I got a Boot CD, from him, with Format on it and re-formatted the drive, wiping out all the data. Then I installed W7 again. It apppeared to be going through the multiple install again, but it eventually installed.

Now I am learning all over again. ;)
XP--->W7 is a really big change in appearance, and operation etc.
Vista--->W7 is probably not such a jump in learning, etc.

This is my first daily post, on MG, in W7. :)

Great that you are willing to learn Win 7 and bet you will master it in no time. :)

XP is like a comfortable pj to me. I'd have to purchase a whole new machine with new monitor, printer etc. because they all are old yet function still beautifully. If all this equipment would be counted in dog years, they still would be far younger than me. ;) Additionally I'm not inclined (yet) to get a second machine with Win 7 because I'm the only one using a computer here. I had a previous machine in 2003, which was a Dell 2400 Celeron which was only 1 year old when I purchased the current one. I donated that one with scanner, printer and external HD to someone who lacked the funds to buy one. Perhaps I should have kept it myself to experiment on it or use it as a backup.

    That's an incredible buy!It must be a loss leader:confused

I've just paid £75 for win 7 home premium OEM which is $130 Aussie dollars.

EDIT If anyone knows where I can get it seriously cheaper or a copy of ultimate or a retail version for the same price I'm all ears?I can still return it.

    Thanks for the compliment, oma.

Ages ago in computer progression time (late last year), when my older Toshiba laptop blew up a motherboard, I was told it would cost AUD $500 to replace it, and I would still have an old machine.

I could have bought a new laptop for not much more. :(

A bloke I had worked for twice, and who owns a computer store (less than a minute away by car) had a 17" screen Toshiba Satellite Pro P 100 (re-furbished), for sale at the same price. I had always wanted a laptop with a numeric keypad and a 17" screen model was the only way to go at the time.

8-9 months later, right now there are plenty of 15.6" laptops with numeric notepads, but not then. Anyway to make a long story even longer, he told me that the P100 would run Windows 7. It was using XP Pro at the time. I didn't fully realise what was ahead of me. ;)

I came across an ad for W7 Ultimate at a ridiculously cheap AUD$ price so purchased it. Next step was a larger capacity 2.5" drive to run it (does it ever end) :-D. A bit more research and I settled on a Seagate Momentus Hybrid 500 gig drive.

So now I had to install, and learn, W7. :-D

After stuffing up the loading of W7 initially, I finally got it going and am very happy with setup I have now (another gig of RAM might prove useful). ;)

I am still vey much at the Minor Geek stage on W7 at present. Halo, other MG'ers, and Black Viper (http://www.blackviper.com/Windows_7/supertweaks.htm , http://www.blackviper.com/Admin/contactbv.htm , http://www.blackviper.com/AskBV/faqBV11.htm ) are proving to be a great help in progressing my learning and tweaking.

Being an old F**t, it keeps me thinking and progressing, and dodging "Old Timers disease", I hope.

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

If I'm not mistaken, it was (is) common practice for wholesalers of hard drives, etc., to have Windows bundled from the HD manufacturers - remember the caveat on some of the online retailers "Windows must be purchased with equipment"? Ergo, the surplus of Windows OEM versions: retailers sell the HD and the software separately, recouping some of their wholesale losses...

For the most part, OEM versions will install properly, regardless of machine make...

    Good job, bigbazza...

Thanks Caliban. The W7 software was advertised as OEM, but turned out to be the black packaged Retail package. So I scored even a bit better.

OEM or Retail wouldn't have mattered much ,in my case, as I had to do a "clean install" update from XP anyhow.

Looks like they are closed, or have been closed. (see post #1 to start all this off)

    Today, affordablesoftware.org returns a 404 error.:(

My Software was activated through MS, OK. Product serial key was accepted by MS.:)

Some others had suspicions as well.

Yeah that's a pretty solid theory as to why it was so cheap.

EDIT reading those comments maybe it would be prudent to have a word with your Bank to make sure no more transactions are allowed through them?

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

There's an outlaw 'puter store near here that's been busted several times for Microsoft licensing violations - at first, I heard they were farming out the infamous 'Devil's Own' XP disk, which I believe had a hacked wpa file...after getting caught for that (and the subsequent fines), they switched (with a new store name) to monkeying around with OEM and Site licensing...they were busted again recently, but it wouldn't surprise me if they popped up again soon...

Outfits like yours and this one never quit, do they?

Thanks Caliban. :) I'm still not sure if they are /were dodgy or not. All I know is that I got a better product, on time, than I ordered. (Retail product versus OEM product) .

And that MS accepted the 25 character Validation key as OK. :confused

The more I think about this Bazza the more solidly I believe your copy of win7 must be pirated, there's no way they could sell a legit copy for that price.

They must have got their hands on a load of legitimate keys which is easy to do,Microsoft may accept the key but in a few weeks the key could be blacklisted, especially if they've used the same key multiple times.

I'm guessing your copy is a printed disk?I'm sure it will be will that level of sophistication, there will be other tells on the packaging that will give it away, the hologram is very easy to duplicate these days.

Is your copy only 64 bit?

Maybe another theory is cross border shipping, you can purchase win 7 in China for $58 US.

    Thanks for your ideas, Rikky.

As I have said before, it certainly looks genuine.
My computer shop owner, friend, rated it OK.

Inside are 2 DVD'a. One for 32 bit, one of 64 Bit.
Both DVD's have a golden ring around the outside of each, with a kind of reflective surface that is like a holograph.

Inside, on paperwork, is the 25 character Licence Key which I loaded straight away on installation and validated with Microsoft straight away.

Also inside, a single page of tips on "Upgrading from Windows XP?"
And a multicoloured booklet (X15-60484-03 on "Welcome to your PC, simplified -Windows 7)

I have also carried out Microsoft updates, since installing, with no problems.
On top of the DVD container is a Microsoft sticker (labelled Certificate of Authenticity that has a silver inlay labelled Genuine) that you have to break the seal to open the DVD and get to the DVD's.

It all sure looks genuine to me, in typical Microsoft colours and fonts.

So I don't know but definitely no hassles so far. :-D
