I have four air-conditioners in the house, air-conditioning in all five cars and refuse to work where it isn't air-conditioned, unless the pay is truly outstanding. If you've ever lived in Western Australia, you'd know why. Me and 45C temps don't mix.
That said, we're in mid-winter down under, so it's more than a tad chilly, at.m.

Want to trade? LOL Depending on the venue, it is often upwards of 90F in the building, which means we're dripping sweat even before we start doing physical labour. I usually go through 3-5 sets of clothing during the summer. rolleyes

Today's not bad so far, heat index only 84F. Plus I'm still off work. :)

WTF? This morning, here in north east England it was like mid November. I went to work wearing my wooly titfer, for God's sake.
At least my workplace was more comfortable :)

Same thing seems to happen every freakin year now you'd think they'd learn,we get a strange freaky hot summer TOO early then it stays uncomfortably hot but not sunny so can't actually do anything like go to the beach, then all the experts and news outlets start crying about the water level like we're in the middle of a disaster movie and the waters never coming back!

Then just as we've banned all hosepipes, refuelled the the flying machine armed the nuclear weapon and Hillary Swanks pointed it at a cloud it pee's it down for the rest of the summer and everywhere gets flooded.

Its July now our summers well over :-D

When in London for a long weekend decades ago, it started to drizzle. Went into the store to purchase some protective gear and when we went outside it was dry. Must be just like Holland, little sun and lots of drizzle, rain.

When taking the train from Southend to London, everything looked so green Pretty though.

I'll put up with hot weather and brown grass as well anytime since I love the sun.

Dude, that is not hot enough.
I want it so hot here that the house melts. Sick of rain and wind. This is mid July. Can't we have a little bit more of the sun before autumn turns up?

@ Halo I couldn't believe the news when I saw the hosepipe ban in force. :-D
Not that long ago the northwest was under fifteen feet of water! How could so much water disappear in such a short space of time? Cumbria looked like the Pacific Ocean in November.
    I blame the government. Again.

Amen, sister! I can deal with just about any heat as long as it doesn't come with the ridiculous humidity! Every day I was in Tahoe last week it was 80F-ish during the day, but with around 5% humidity it was some of the best weather ever!

JOTS i wish we got a bit more sunshine in the north east - the met office did predict an 'icecream summer'. just been away with my mates and we got a torrential downpour 1st night and were due for another the second night, which was fine apart from the fact WE WERE IN A TENT!!!

yes please!!! anytime this summer would be fantasic ;)

Some utility dealer in the City of London stole it all to sell on the futures market and buy themselves a new Ferrari with the profit ;)

Dunno really as its laughable, but you would get the excuse from the utilities that the rain was either the wrong type or fell in the wrong place. Well since they started selling of resevours then duh, less water for folk.

To my all time major irk..... "fix your damn leaking mains" all they do it turn the pressure down to fool Ofwat! (another quango that needs to go in this quango revolution)

It's really a British trait we have, which we use mecilessly to take the pi$$ out of our utilities and public services. British Rail (deceased) had a long standing tradition of running unpunctual services and blaming the situation on the most ludicrous of things. The wrong snow, the wrong leaves, the wrong trousers, etc on the railway lines was a laughable attempt to justify a train running two hours late. When Halo uses the phrase 'the wrong type of rain', he's stating a corporate staple that is used to justify an altogether unreliable service.
In this case, it's the water suppliers 'losing' millions of gallons of rainwater in eight months. That's Britain in a nutshell.

Now there's a reason to be proud to be British, we conquered the most powerful nations, we sparked the industrial revolution, we invented Chicken in a basket with chips, we fear nothing....NOTHING!!.... except our trains come to a grinding halt if there are leaves on the track..... THIS, ladies and gentlemen is what it is like to be British :strong

Cheers for that JOTS, good explanation, have to say one thing though on trains, when we had that bit of snow in Jan this year, and transport ground to a halt, the only thing running here was Merseyrail, and why, was the boss decided to keep the trains running all night with the trackcleaning ones inbetween so the lines or trains wouldnt freeze.

So have to say some are now better than others.

Well Ned, we have that "stiff upper lip" mentality and keep on plodding along.

I know Ned, it was what I guess saved Liverpool from grinding to a halt as the council gritters missed the boat! so no buses and very little traffic moving for some days, I for a week walked 2miles to the station and got the train.

Weather is just really funky of late all over the globe.

  26. joey off the street

joey off the street Lounge Lizard No.1

Huh? Liverpool only ran the trains cos if they stand for more than ten minutes someone nicks them.
Sorry for that, it was irresistable.
So when Liverpool at least ran trains, the rest of the country ground to a halt? Why isn't this mentality transferred to the rest of the heads of transport?
    Go on, Scousers. Epic win.

Yeah know I opened the door to that one!

No idea.... guess they could not be bothered with the hard work and long hours, maybe it is something many transport companies need to look at for this coming winter (not that in the best British tradistion they will, we have to as you know have 3 of the same bad things happen before anyone acts), I do understand though that some trainlines are so remote in lenght that it would likely be impossible to do but inner city, definatly.

Unless one of our Canadian, northern American or Swedish friends can rebut this, I expect these countries manage to run their out of town rail systems just fine. The attitude of the top bananas in the UK to, as you said, long hours and hard work, is abysmal. But the same heads of the transport networks still collect their many thousands of pounds for zero effort.
The head of Merseyrail should be minister for keeping this country running in slightly harsh weather conditions.
I mean, how can a country run out of grit? Only in Britain, I'll bet.

Well speaking for the area I live in, the nearest train or bus is a 45 minute drive away, other than your own car, it's a taxi ride.
Kind of surprising really since obviously comming from England with it's mass transit system to here that has basically no transit system until you get into the cities.
Doesn't really bother me and with the population in Canada being so small for such a lot of land mass it's probably not feasable to put in rural transit because everyone has a car.

Fair enough, Ned. But I wager you could get a train from Edmonton to Quebec in January. We couldn't get a train from Berwick to Edinburgh, 40 miles up the road! At least your train system (or anything else for that matter) doesn't grind to a stop when a bit of snow falls.

  37. Fred_G

    Fred_G Heat packin' geek

I don't think the trains stop running, but in the South, we shut down when we get an ice storm. LOL, they used to close the schools when there was a rumor of snow. :-D

We don't have the equipment to keeps roads open, so a lot of times they shut down the elevated roadways. Of course, then the bright folks who have never driven on ice (and don't have snow tires) go driving around town. It is funny to watch them. Body shops love it.

Of course, we only get a good ice storm and snow once every 10 years or so.

No, this is true but like I've said before when people laugh about Britain grinding to a halt with 2 inches of snow when we here drive to work through 12 inches.

People here are not only used to it, but prepared for it, there are measures and proceedure in effect to keep everything running here , why?... because we get heavy snow every year.

I know what you're saying and somewhat agree, but when it snows here there are snow ploughs everywhere.... how many snow ploughs does Britain have?, I would also imagine the train system has some system to deal with it too, heated rails maybe or something, hell, I know 3 people with heated driveways.

It boils down to the British system being unprepared.... which is sad because we're British and should be prepared for any situation.

Uhh.. no. The public trans. system around here is a nightmare. They are most expensive in all of the 50 states, have the most arrogant workers (management too), are exorbitantly paid for the mediocre job they do, are never on time and the buses and trains are broken down and graffitied. Just to show the arrogance of the workers, a few months ago the union had the nerve to go on strike (in the midst of a recession, mind you rolleyes) because the transportation company could only afford them a 7% raise and wanted them to pay one 1% for their healthcare (1%!!! I pay 50% for mine!!) and they said no, they wanted a 10% raise and didn't want to contribute to their own healthcare so they they went on strike and brought the city & suburbs to a grinding halt. So many people were angry because peoples jobs were on the line, they were in fear of losing their because they couldn't get to work. ALL because of GREED.

  40. Mimsy

You have obviously never tried to use the Stockholm subway system in January. rolleyes

The Powers That Be decided that in an effort to save money, all new train cars and engines would be purchased from the lowest bidder, a company in Italy. (collective groan from all Europeans reading this...) They were built for an Italian climate, which means the liquid in the hydraulic breaks freezes below 0C and the breaks stop working. Below 0C, in Stockholm! There were no trains for a week, and then very limited traffic for the next two weeks while they scrambled for temporary emergency solutions.

Don't even get me started on the national train system. The snow takes them by surprise every single year and the way your UK trains are running seems smooth and efficient by comparison.

I agree with you and Neds post below highlights what is wrong, the problem in the UK is since the mid 1990s or slightly earlier (when I was still in school) the winters where much worse than they are now, with say a foot or so of snow, those days we did have the equipement to deal with the levels of snow that we would get as we would get similar each year.

Now since we decided to get a bit warmer and wetter over winter the councils have not updated their fleets of snow moving and gritting equipement, hence why we get caught out each year with pants down, councils just will not pay for equipement that "may" only be used once in a blue moon.... not to say and this is my point, they cannot retro fit plow attachements to other council trucks (bin wagons etc).

Case in point in my city, the pavements where covered in snow and ice, around a few inches, I was walking from work to the train station, and passes a council street cleaning and maintenence office, where the workers heat up lunch and meet, and low and behold the only part of the pavement cleaned of snow and ice was leading from the street to the office door!! with standing by a council wagon 13 workers all leaning on shovels, now you cannot even say they had been cleaning the main shopping centre streets and the station is on them and it was still slippy as hell!!!! :confused what the hell where they getting paid for?

Indeed other countries have this weather year in year out so the cost of the equipement is justified and is used, in UK sadly... well I said it above in responce to JOTS.

*what the hell was the topic again?*

What I am saying is, why buy a leather chair with an expensive cooling attachment on it. The public are wise enough (I think) to go out and buy a fabric seated chair.
But you can bet your last tenner that someone somewhere will fancy one. And someone will make a lot of money from it.
