LOL, I couldn't vote as it was a tie!:-D All I can say is turn off MTV and find alternate sources of music. Ones that I like are college/uni stations which play a lot of good new stuff though not the cap pushed by labels and top 40 stations. I prefer jazz/blues both standard and not so standard plus orchestral and I don't mean the old classics either. There's a lot of great old rock and roll but I'm quite prejudiced there too. ;)

Try new stuff, if ya don't like it then move on as there's so much available to try before you buy these days that you'll find your own likes at this point in time.

Got to go back to the golden age of music to find the last tIme music was truly excellent right across the board. 1976-1983. Even the crap songs then were better than the shite that's churned out today. I'd rather listen to Augie's music than 'grunge'. It sounds like it is. Must be onamatapaic.
Bear in mind, to me grunge sounds like something that would come out of an animal's bottom.

I like a good song with good, thoughtful lyrics. "Music" nowadays is nothing but stupid, horrendous lyrics that sound like they were came up with by a 5 year old. I mean, for example, this song being blasted out of a guys car and all I heard was "yea, I'm a cool cat and I don't like no hood rats, gotta get me a baseball bat" (or something similar LOL) is that what music has been reduced to? rhyming? and that's just one example of horrible music.

I will get mocked but this is the reason I love country (namely Taylor Swift). All her songs have good beat, great words, and actually mean something. I haven't found one song of hers that I haven't liked yet.

I grew up in the "Classic Rock" era and still have a tendency to listen to Metal.

To me, music is about playing actual instruments and not just making weird noises with whatever you can find.

I enjoy actual singers, regardless of musical genre.

Whoa, whoa, whoa..! All music today is not crap. The music you just posted is, sure... but it's hardly representative of today's new music. I tried to listen to them so I could vote, but the urge to hammer my laptop with a big sledge hammer to make the noise stop became too powerful and I had to turn off the videos, since I do love my laptop and don't want to hammer it to pieces.

Allow me to salvage this thread by presenting you with some recent, and very non-sucky, real music. No official videos since they seemed, er, unsuitable for the general family-friendliness of MGs. I am already pushing it with the lyrics as it is, I think. Lyrics = NSFW (and NSFKids)! You have been warned. :)

    Yeah, I have to agree.

Been wondering if I should steer clear of this topic since I am a musician and
my roots and tastes go way back. I started out playing with a few rock-n-roll
bands but then got interested in jazz. I wanted to play with the big boys (men)
and real musicians, so I got union card, made some calls, sat in with a few
people and was playing professionally when I was 17, still in high school.

I'm a drummer, so I liked listening to great drummers.
When I was in my early teens, I was a Big Sandy Nelson fan.
I continued buying his albums through my high school years - must have a dozen or so.

What really changed my life as a musician was when I saw a program one
weekend hosted by Walter Cronkite about Dave Brubeck.
I didn't know what jazz was. I probably thought it was just dixieland or something
that was played in small, dark, smoke filled rooms.
Sometime after seeing that show, I saw an album at the soda shop near our house and it had Dave Brubeck's name on it.
So I went home, got some money, (I was only 14 or 15) bought the album, took it home and started listening.
I was amazed!!! I had never heard anything like that. It was so smooth and
so polished. I was hooked. The name of the album was "Time Out".
Brubeck's son, Dan, who is also a drummer, told me that this was their best
selling album. The drummer, Joe Morello, and also later Buddy Rich, became my
    favorite drummers.

'Take Five' is one of the tunes on that album, which I believe might have
inspired Lalo Schifrin's composition, the Mission Impossible theme.

Donald Fagen's partner, Walter Becker, of Steely Dan, said that he became
interested in jazz the same way. It was Brubeck's alto player, Paul Desmond,
and his long lyrical solos that got him.

I don't know how to link in a youtube video, so I'll add a few links - maybe later.

    Brubeck: Take the 'A' Train

I have so many Buddy Rich links, don't know which are the best and actually have good audio/video. A few that I really liked have been removed. :mad

Buddy Rich: 'Birdland' - Jacksonville Jazz Fest

    Buddy Rich: 'Love For Sale'

A friend sent me a link to this one:

    Charlie Parker Legacy Band: 'Cherokee'

Jeff Beck is great, but this girl is just amazing!!! rolleyes
I love watching and listening to her play. ;)

Tal Wilkenfeld - bass with Jeff Beck at Crossroads Guitar Fest

    Tal Wilkenfeld - Serendipity

    These guys are great!!! LOL

    Rachmaninov had big Hands

    Mozart Bond 2

I could go on with this all night.
I better take a break. :cool

So, without any further ado, here's the late but still great Buddy Rich and Time Check!:-D Enjoy all.:p

That 'Time Check' clip is from a DVD titled 'Buddy Rich: At The Top" recorded at The Top of the Plaza in Rochester, New York on February 6, 1973.

Here is one that soon may also be gone.
It is from the Concert for the Americas in the Dominican Republic with Frank Sinatra.
It's a shorter version of the bands West Side Story medley with a great solo by Buddy.

Mimsy, like the Cage the Elephant song. ZDawg, it would not let me vote for each song, but the first one I think is the worst, after 5 seconds, it was turned off.

Getting more into relaxing music as I get older... :cool

Well, I'm sorry to have to break this to you, Mimsy, but you're doing jazz too. ;)

That first clip, "Love For Sale" was written by Cole Porter and has become a jazz Standard.
I have played it many times. Maybe you didn't notice but that's the same tune
in the first Buddy Rich clip I posted.

Your second Lisa Ekdahl clip is certainly jazz. The opening vocal is sort of latin jazz but after that its a great groovy swing.

As for the third Lisa clip - from wikipedia: cry me a river

Nice tune. I've done that one a number of times as well.

Don't know if you'll like this, but this girl is a friend of mine and she's into Latin Jazz.
I have jammed with her probably about ten times now. Really nice girl too!
And CUTE, as you can see.

Well, someone had to undo the severe emotional damage you tried to inflict on all of us by posting that garbage earlier!

AC/DC aren't half bad either. I like this one by them too... they play it on the local Rock/Metal radio stations a lot. I have no objections. :)

Very welcome. I like her voice... she's done a lot of Swedish folk songs as well, but I didn't think that be as popular. :)

Oooo... guitar! Nice. :) Now, some more Avenged Sevenfold! :guitar

And another good one by Cage the Elephant. Love the attitude.

Gave the wrong link for Becky - that one is for booking.

Her stuff isn't the same flavor as Lisa Ekdahl's, although her ballads are nice.

Oh, me like Brazilian Jazz! :) Since we seem to have gone jazz-wards here, here are two other Swedish jazz/blues laides, Rebecca Törnqvist and Louise Hoffsten.

Back when I lived in Stockholm I went to a jazz club there to see a different band and Louise Hoffsten was in the crowd. The members of the band were friends with her, so they pulled her up on stage and convinced her to do a couple of songs with them. She's good with that harmonica... :)

A much as I like KISS, the flights at short notice are $1200 return!!! (add one nights hotel to that also) NAH.... they not that good and can catch on TV any of their shows and listen to the CDs ;)

Then again $1200 for coming to NYC and flicking your ears and whacking you on thr back of the head like Gibbs form NCIS is not worth that.... I will leave for another time when I'm over in the USA, and NYC ;)
