Hi,.........can anyone help my hangs and freezes?

I posted this problem in the malware forum but it appears I am clean (Thanks Guys!)http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?p=1519048#post1519048

The PC has suddenly become prone to Freezes.
    It has XP (SP3) & IE7 installed.
    But I mostly use Firefox.

    Main Symptoms

(1)I cannot delete documents or programs easily.
The “deleting” window freezes and I have to end the programs in Task Manager or do a forced shutdown.
Dragging items to the recycle Bin works more often (once or twice) but eventually this freezes with broken panes of open programs frozen.
Also in My Docs if I open some lager files (.bmp) when I close them they remain greyed-out and frozen in My Docs.
All deletions cause a freeze then taskmanager shutdown or a forced shutdown.

(2)IE7 is very sticky & won’t always close. And when I try to force it in Taskmanager there are two instances running when only one is open

    (3) Search Box is also sticky at times.

    What should I do next???

Meh, with all that going on I'd back up my stuff and start with a fresh install of XP and if the problems persist then it's time to look at hardware issues.

    How much RAM is showing?
What processes (top two) use the most CPU in Task Manager? (do not look at system idle)

    How are you "deleting" programs?
That is a completely different process from simply deleting documents.

    Greetings, eljay...

I couldn't help but noticing the similarities between your problems and those in this thread - the possibility exists that some gremlins are being left over by the malware cleaning procedures...

If plodr's suggestion doesn't prove fruitful, I'd have to agree with augiedoggie: format and reinstall - you get a fresh 'puter with some added experience free of charge...

    Keep us posted...

Thanks AugieDoggie, pldr, mjnc & caliban,

    Reinstall?
The system was built by my son's friend's mum. She has the disc, and unfortunately her husband is desparately ill. I just can't trouble her.

She did put a TrueImage original system backup on a partition. Would reverting to it mean an effective reinstall? Would I lose My Docs etc.?

Drivers (Possibly raised by the unresolved thread on link posted)
I have had recent needs to keep uninstalling and reinstalling my Canonscan 5000F software. Specifically I just cannot get Scansoft OmnipageSE OCR software to work. I get a small grey window with just the red disc with the white X inside it.

    Thanks Again

Here is the CPU & Memory figure from TaskManager (3rd attempt)

do we have a temp reading on the CPU yet? Hot CPU means system lock ups.

Also, did you use combo fix in your malware session?

Sorry motc7, I don't have a means of measuring the CPU Temp. is there a way?

Yes I did use Combo fix ans attached the log on that thread.

    Thanks

It shows 2GB of RAM so a failing stick and less RAM isn't causing the freezes.
I couldn't see the bmp but I can see the jpg - thanks.

jqs.exe is Java Quickstarter and can be disabled.

I see he is running Superantispyware and Avast. I have to see if they play well together. I had SAS but not running in real time so I have no experience with that scenario.

opware32, which has to do with scanning, is running. Maybe as you installed and uninstalled you did not get out all the bits and pieces. That might cause a hangup.

devldr32 is part of Creative SoundBlaster and can cause hangups. I'm searching for a way to prevent it from starting up.

You might want to install WinPatrol http://majorgeeks.com/WinPatrol_d3380.html
that can help you manage your startup items. You simply mark what you do not want to run at startup. If you make a mistake, it is easy to go back in and fix it.

You might want to remove PDVDServ. Advice on what it is here
    http://www.pcpitstop.com/libraries/process/i/PDVDServ.exe.html

    That's a start.

Thanks for all the help so far guys.
I'm off on two weeks holiday tomorrow morning.
So I can't do any more until then.

After uninstalling some of the downloaded cleanup programs and using WinPatrol to re-restrict startup items I have some improvemenmt, (I think)

Thank you so very much for now.
